As I read somewhere, it's not currently possible since the speakers of the Studio Display are considered as USB Speaker. HDMI from the Switch cannot handle that in any way with a "simple" cable converted. This would require a specific device to convert HDMI video/audio > USB-C DisplayPort + USB-C Audio and I am not even sure this exists.

Maybe two devices chained...

Right, that's what he means. The Studio Display's speakers / audio device aren't connected to the video inputs as they would be in a "normal" display or television, they're logically separate.

Has anyone tried using an HDMI audio extractor to get the audio out ahead of the HDMI to USB-C conversion? Wouldn't help you if you use the speakers in the studio display for sound but if you have an interface and "real" speakers this should work.

I confirm that Club3D CAC-1334 / CAC-1333 works like a charm for the Nintendo Switch (without audio). I use my AirPods Max on the Switch now that's an option.
Club3D CAC-1333 is a better idea imo since it's a female cable and I find this is more easy to switch if you have a MacBook connected to the Studio Display ! You just unplug the MacBook & plug to the female cable for the switch and it takes a second, not even more complicated than using a KVM (and less expensive + no risk of "loosing" something from the KVM capacity)

Even better, add these magnetic connectors to completely eliminate the strain and friction-wear on your female ports.

^^ confirmed (by me, and others) to work great with the Studio Display, Pro Display XDR, etc.

What retailer did you use to buy the CAC-1333? Not seeing it on Amazon atm, but this sounds like the best set-up—then using airpods for audio from the switch.

I bought it from Amazon.fr (I am living in France), but I didn't find the reference easily ! I think the one I bought didn't even have "CAC-1333" on the top of product page.

I just replaced .fr with .com & here you go:

Updated: Recommended Solution 3 & Solution 4

Solution 1 (Not Recommend):
PS5
gofanco Prophecy HDMI 2.0 to DisplayPort 1.2 Converter (Red Light: 4K@60Hz EDID)
Wacom Link Plus
→ Apple Studio Display
4K@60Hz, No Audio, No HDR.

Solution 2 (Not Recommend):
PS5
gofanco Prophecy HDMI 2.0 to DisplayPort 1.2 Converter (Red Light: 4K@60Hz EDID)
StarTech.com 3.3ft (1m) USB C to DisplayPort 1.2 Cable 4K 60Hz - Bidirectional
→ Apple Studio Display
4K@60Hz, No Audio, No HDR.

Solution 3 (Recommend For Switch):
PS5/Switch
Club3D CAC-1334
→ Apple Studio Display
1080p@60Hz, No Audio, No HDR.
720p@60Hz, No Audio, HDR.

Solution 4 (Recommend For PS5):
PS5 (Required Settings: HDR Off)
gofanco Prophecy 4K EDID Emulator - 17 EDID Modes (5-On: 4K@60Hz 4:2:0 8/10/12Bit 3D HDR video & 2ch audio)
Club3D CAC-1334
→ Apple Studio Display
4K@60Hz, No Audio, No HDR.

I also found a USB-C KVM to switch between MacBook Pro 14" and PS5:
USB-C 1 (Signal from PS5, Club3D CAC-1334) + USB-C 2 (Signal from MacBook Pro 14")
CableDeconn USB-C Type-C 8K Updated Switch USB 3.1 C Gen 2 Cable for Video Bi-Direction
→ Apple Studio Display
It could power up MacBook Pro 14" if it switch to the MacBook Pro

I got the Gofanco Prophecy EDID and with pin 5 down it not work. Connected It would light up the Studio Display and flicker gray, but would not show an image. Any ideas?

UPDATE: to solve the flickering using a ps5 with the gofanco Prophecy 4k EDID emulator plug your ps5 into another 4k monitor and go to PS5 settings > Screen and Video > 4K Video Transfer Rate. Set it to -1. Additionally, turn all HDR and Deep Color Output settings on the PS5 to OFF. The flickering should stop when using the PS5 with the studio display.

I just got mine setup the same way as frogcjn set it up.
Solution 4 (Recommend For PS5):
PS5 (Required Settings: HDR Off)
gofanco Prophecy 4K EDID Emulator - 17 EDID Modes (5-On: 4K@60Hz 4:2:0 8/10/12Bit 3D HDR video & 2ch audio)
Club3D CAC-1334
→ Apple Studio Display
4K@60Hz, No Audio, No HDR.

At first it didn't work with just the 5th DIP switch turned on. I followed what prayingnantes suggested. Set the 4K Video Transfer Rate to -1, turn off HDR, turn off Deep Color settings.

But I didn't have another 4K monitor or TV to be able to change those settings. Connecting the PS5 to a ASD with just the Club3D CAC-1334 is connected as a 1080p video and having all DIP switches of the EDID Emulator turned off also is a 1080 video. The PS5 does not allow you to change 4K setting while connected to a 1080p video source.

To fix that I went to the video settings on the PS5. Then turned on remote play to my phone. You have to be on the video settings page before connecting to remote play as you cannot enter the video settings while connected through remote play. Then I turned on the 5th DIP switch. Immediately the initial HDR settings popped up on the remote play video. Went through the initial setup process, it put me back on the video settings page. Turn off HDR, Deep Color, set Video Transfer to -1 and viola it worked.

Thank you to frogcjn and prayingnantes. Your methods worked for me.

I got an Xbox Series X working flawlessly with the Studio Display at 4k 60hz and a Switch working at 1080p. It required a little bit of leg work through an EDID emulator.

So first I use a HDMi to USB-C adapter purchased months ago from a random person that was recommended on this Reddit thread linked below. It felt very sketchy at the time just emailing and PayPal’ing them money, but in the end it ended up being great. Definitely a high quality adapter and USB-C cable. I can post pics of it later if anyone is interested. It was $63, or $86 with expedited shipping which I went for and it showed up super quick. It’s a fully unbranded adapter coming straight from China and the person told me they are working on a newer version which may already be ready now. Not sure what the newer version offers.

At the time of emailing them back in October, they sounded very aware of everyone trying to get devices to work with their Pro Display XDR’s and LG Ultrafine’s.

BUT, the Xbox and Switch had very low resolutions by default so I had to use an EDID emulator to trick them into having the option to display in 4k 60hz and 1080. After dropping the EDID device in the mix, I just went to settings and changed resolution to 4k. This is the exact model that I used linked below.

It’s all listed in the manual but for the sake of thoroughness, I set all the dip switches to the up position except number five which stays down from what I recall. Will update here if that’s wrong.

I also tried another EDID emulator that was just a small little non-external powered adapter and it didn’t work. Only the one I linked worked.

There is no sound transmitted to the Studio Display from this whole setup, but I use the official wireless Xbox headset which definitely does the job for casual gaming.

Let me know if anyone has any questions and I’ll try to help. I’m looking for a simplified solution to this myself though, especially one that doesn’t require the EDID emulator.

Side note- It’s very annoying to switch my Xbox and Switch from my tv to the Studio Display with this mess of adapters and all that so I actually just ordered this HDMI splitter from that same EDID emulator company to test out. It looks like a splitter, EDID emulator, and audio extractor all in one. Plus I can link it to my tv and Studio Display at the same time and switch between my Xbox and Switch. It’s pricey and probably overkill so open to any ideas. In the meantime I’ll test it out this weekend when it arrives. Seems like the simplest solution. All I have to do is disconnect my MacBook and connect the hdmi to usb-c adapter.

Hope you enjoyed my rambling here haha.
Have you tried using the VR cable from Belkin Huawei? It comes with two USB inputs and as far as I know it works well with a PC driven audio display (including audio, brightness adjustment, and even a USB Hub).

Just to be clear - are the 3 USB-C ports on the Studio Display not inputs?? Am I reading this right that they're just outputs from an internal USB-C hub??

If so, that's yet another time I'm not going anywhere near an Apple Display. Such a shame, I desperately want the full Apple experience for my M1 Mac mini but I also need to plug in a gaming PC, a Switch and an FPGA device (with HDMI output). For the most insane of moments, I assumed the Studio Display connected to my M1 mini over thunderbolt and the other devices with HDMI->USB-C or DP->USB-C would have been an awesome (if expensive) solution.

I really need to find a decent display for my M1 Mini.

Your terminology is a little borked (they're all inputs), but your understanding is correct: there is one port from which you can connect computers, it's the one marked with a lightning bolt.

Some users here have reported success with this USB-C switch; I tried one, it worked with my Razer laptop, but not my Macbook Pro.

… I just realized, it's not working because this switch only supports 4k displays. I must have learned about it from a discussion about the LG Ultrafine 4k… regardless, for your particular needs I think you'll find the Studio Display to be a world of hurt.

I finally found an idealish solution for PS5 <> Apple Studio Display with sound:
gofanco Prophecy HDMI 2.0 to DisplayPort 1.2 Converter (EDID sets to green)
CableCreation 8K Bi-Directional DisplayPort to USB C Cable

The gofanco converter + bidirectional DisplayPort to USB C cable act as a HDMI to USB C bridge, an EDID edit, and an audio extractor all in one. Connect the aux port to any speaker and you get 4K@60Hz + speaker sound on your ASD with PS5.
Bought this pair and worked with the PS4 Pro, I had to adjust the color. So far I plugged in a headphone on the DualsShock 4 controller, the downside was the bundled power supply which took some of the valuable space on my UPS. Since it has a micro USB port on the converter, I wonder if I can swap a USB style 5V 2A and call it good.

No luck for my XBOX Series X.

The most optimal clean solution should be the Club3D 1333 + Thunderbolt 3/4 cable to the ASD.

And in theory this cable admits up to 4K60, but I only get 1080P.
I try different cables and XBOX settings with no luck. Do you know why I can only reach 1080P?

I emailed Club3D and they told me an adapter using the LT6711GX chipset for HDMI 2.1 to USB-C DP 1.4 would be available by July 2022, however from what frogcjn says it may not be a bandwidth limitation but the Edid communication between the PS5 and Studio Display.
Any updates on this now that it's (barely) July?

I also emailed Club3D about why the Club3D 1333 only can reach 1080P in next gen consoles, lets see if they answer me something.

Update - today my ASD completely stopped working on my PS5. Black screen, no nothing. I tried another set of cable to connect (used to works for 1080p) and also doesn't work. After eliminating I think the issue is with ASD. However, it still works with my MBPs. I gonna contact Apple to see if there's anything I can do.
