I had this same problem. The sensor wouldn't activate and wouldn't turn the screen off so I would end up putting people on mute or hold. I tried to exchange the phone through AT&T but the phone was back ordered so I contacted Apple Care and they had me do a reset and that didn't work. Apple then had me do a full software restore and that didn't work. They finally agreed that it was a hardware issue and exchanged my iphone within 48 hours. Of course they had to put a hold on my credit card for the full price of the phone, but it was better than what AT&T wanted. AT&T actually wanted to charge me for the full price ($700) and wouldn't credit it back until they got the phone back and within 2 or 3 business cycles (2 or 3 months)! The new phone that Apple sent works great expect for the signal issues when holding the phone. But I have a bumper case on the phone so it's not that big of a deal.

Some users say they have problems. I don't have one freaking problem with my iphone 4.
NOOOOOOOONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

iPhone 3G running iOS 4 has similar problem.

Since I upgraded to 4.0, I've been having serious sensor issues on my old iPhone 3G. I'll be holding the phone to my face and it will suddenly go to speakerphone, etc.

It might be a software issue, therefore.

I've noticed a lot of people joining MacRumors in the past month just to bash the iPhone or Macs in general.

They don't join to bash - did it happen with the 3G or 3GS? No? (or not to same extent) Because they worked properly, what you see is unhappy consumers who have bought a flawed product and wishing to find out if they are alone or if others are experiencing the same faults and if they (or Apple) can fix them. You are very delusional if you think there are huge teams of dedicated "bashers" just waiting for each Apple launch - get over it, Apple messed up.

Are you trying to be funny? This is serious. A lot of people have paid £600 for this phone that supposedly "changes everything."

You act like you took that quote at face value. You're not serious are you? I guess you think drinking the right beer will get you hot girls on the beach, too?

Kewl but it's clearly evident that not everyone is loosing signal as per my original post.
:D
And I can't tell you how bad I wish I was one of those people but I'm not. I kept my 3gs and if there's isn't a fix before my 30 days is up I'll be going back to it. I really don't want to but I do use mine as a phone and not just a ipod.

That's how this product was marketed and I'm not alone in thinking that Apple's response to these issues has been a bit too casual considering the price of the phone. By the way I don't have to pick up girls in that way and I don't drink beer.

I too have issues, and so does my iPhone.

Well, we won't get into me right now, but I also have sensor issues with my 4. I end up muting, speakering, keypading, and even ending calls due to my sensor not keeping the screen off. Mostly when I hold the phone with my shoulder, but does happen when I hold it with my hand too. I don't want to have to keep the thing smushed against my face just to engage the sensor.

Hopefully they will increase the sensitivity with an update. It gets annoying after a while especially when you mute it without knowing and then continue to talk for a while until you hear the other person start saying, "Hello, are you there?", then have to repeat yourself.

I also have had a few issues with the phone calls getting locked up. I can't end and when I close it and reopen the phone app it tries recalling the number but won't connect, repeat. I found a reboot fixes it until it happens again. Anybody else?

Besides the obvious signal problems everything else is cool. Actually it is a great phone. But these issues were not on my 3G so it feels like a step back on a few things to me.

So, back to me...just kidding!:D

I've actually noticed this issue a few times. When it happens, I usually end up in my contacts as a result of being on a call. Hopefully, a software fix is possible and forthcoming.

Yes, I joined for the reasons I stated. Are you superior to me? Is your opinion more valid due to length of time registered on a forum? I tend to think that reasonable criticism of a product is far better than blind fanboyism.

You are the type of person who allows previously respected companies to drop the ball and get away with it - before you know it your beloved Mac will be nothing more than an expensive PC. If Apple, who charge far more than other companies for the benefits of their "better" product design starts making product that doesn't "just work" as their advertising says, then what do they have to offer?

I may only have joined this forum in June after I got my iPhone 4 but that doesn't mean I didn't use the previous generations, or Macbooks for work, or Mac G4's at college for design. I've been part of a product design team for 10 years and know plenty about it ( Here is a review on one of my products just FYI ).

The iPhone 4 has flaws but we pay a premium price for a product without these basic problems (such as antenna attenuation or failing proximity sensors) - that's why people are complaining - this isn't a $50 phone.

LOL, was playing with the iPhone 4 yesterday at the 14th street Apple store and the thing is a POS. No offense, but I was trying to do facetime and the phone literally crashed in my friends hands immediately.

Yeah right and we are suppose to believe in what you say? FaceTime is solid. No crashes here bro. You need to stop trolling and get with the program. Go back to using you Evo 4G. It is a good phone by the way...the Evo.

Sensor works perfect on my Iphone 4. If you are having a problem take the phone back. It has a 1 year warranty.

Why are people scared to do this?

Once again your phone has flaws...take it back and get one that works. But I appreciate you voicing your issues. Apple will fix it, or they will exchange your IP4 for a new one that works. Some of us have no issues. But yes apple probably rushed production, but that would happen to any new product. That is why there is a 1 year warranty...and a 30 day no question asked return policy with no restocking fee. There are always bound to be bad apples in the bunch.

To be fair, I've also noticed a lot of people who joined in the past month bashing long time members who report issues with their phones.

Yup, a good quoteworthy comment at the end there ;)

Unfortunately the 30 day doesn't apply to those of us who got them subsidised on a contract so I'm returning my 16gig one tomorrow to be swapped for a 32gig (I decided if I keep the phone the extra storage will be handy as films look great on the new screen). As I've said before I love the phone but can't stand the flaws I'm experiencing - Hopefully my replacement will not exhibit the problems (possibly optimistic) but will give me another couple of weeks in which to see if Apple's next IOS update solves anything. If not I guess I'm going to have to go with a HTC Desire - which is not too shabby in many respects.
