*stands up and gives a round of applause*

Seriously this is the best comment i have read about in discussions about the iPhone issues. Couldn't have put it better myself.

When you recommend that iPhone users try something else its often met with a defensive comment.... but really why not give it a proper try and see what the alternatives are (and im not just taking about a quick 2min test run in a shop, find out a little bit about what other phones can actually do for you).

This isn't a 'vs' war, its the fact that you guys spend your hard earned cash on a product that seems to have a string of problems, when there are alternatives out there (often cheaper) that will do the job just as well.

Some of us have a lot of money tied up in iPhone apps and so trying the competition at this point isn't really a viable option.

Obviously if Apple really messes things up with the iPhone many of us will have no choice but to try Android, BlackBerry, or Windows Phone no matter how much we have invested in iPhone apps.

Amazingly there are other phone manufacturers who make amazing phones without antenna or proximity sensor issues.

Yet people are so blinded by the Apple reality distortion field that they are simply unwilling to even try the competition.

Dont just assume Apple is always best.. Atleast go try a high spec Android phone like the Droid X / Incredible / Evo 4G etc. Im not saying you will like it, but you owe it to yourself to make an informed decision rather than being an Apple apologist for the rest of your life.

All those phones have their own set of problems....if you dont believe me go to the forums for each respective phone mfr. and you will see what i mean.

These forums are nothing more than bitching grounds for every manufacturer. They constitute the majority of people who have problems but the minority of people who own those devices.

Apple and the iPhone are high profile and and as such they get the lion share of attention by blogs such as this.

I had the same issue on my iPhone 3G. This happened to me twice during using my iPhone 3G in past two years. I remember I end up having the screen back after a phone call by pressing the sleep button twice.

I've had this proximity issue from day one. I've got an appointment at the genius bar tomorrow and I'll be changing the phone. I also have the reception issues and general static interference whenever I make a call. I love Apple but just can't believe how bad the quality control (and customer service) on this has been. Applecare person I spoke to told me to do a restore, which changed nothing.

I've had every generation of the iPhone and never had a problem before, although admittedly reception on the first one with the aluminium enclosure wasn't the best - thought they would have learned the lesson but then they go and stick metal on the outside again, although I was never too keen on the plastic/ceramic back of the 3G!!!

Having said all that my colleague sitting next to me also got his iPhone at launch from the same O2 store at nearly the same time, and his phone has been entirely trouble free, so second time lucky, assuming Apple has stock available at Regent St London store, for the replacement.:)

I bet everyone complaining about this problem will still get the iPhone 4 when the next software update fixes it. Those who don't would never have bought it anyway.

All new products have problems, the early adapters are the guinea pigs. Either deal with the fact that brand new products have faults or wait until they're fixed.

Which ever one you choose, there's no need to bitch about it. Half the threads made here in the last few weeks seem to either be "the iPhone is **** because of [blah] and [blah] and I'm never buying it ever because they haven't fixed everything instantly!!!!" or "the iPhone is amazing it has [blah] and [blah] problem but I don't care!!!!"

All of the secrecy involved must make it difficult to properly test new models or something.

Man, do I love my 3GS! :)

I'm definitely waiting till all these issues get addressed before getting an iPhone4...

This happens to me as well!!

yeah, happens to me as well. As soon as I put the phone to my face, proximity sensor shuts down screen and then never on again. I have to press the lock button at the top a couple of times to ''lock'' or hangup the call.

This also used to happen with my 3gs ever since I had installed ios4 beta2. Now it has been inherited by my iphone 4 since I used the same backup when restoring

sorry and I know this may be fairly off topic but I read all these problems from mobile users and it has me thinking what about what they once were? A computer company. So in my opinion these phones should take a back seat anyway, and yes I know they are raking in the profits, but what happens to us using their computers and we used to be so in love with their os? Phone first, then ipod, then ipad, then computers?

Just has me not knowing if Apple is still the one or not. Should I just say eff it and buy a pc notebook and run moblin? I mean seriously? Where does it end?

Stop spreading yourselves thin Apple, thats what happened to MS the past 10 years.

I never thought I would say this but wtf is a phone thread doing with this many pages on a computer board?

Apple calls itself a mobile device company now. Who knows what they'll be in 10 years time. But I think this was inevitable ever since they dropped the word "Computer" from their name.

The issue is real. Happens to me on every call. PITA.

Anyone reckon that newer batches will be any different? I'm wondering whether to trade in my 16gig for a 32gig while I am still able (by Friday) - and to downgrade my contract from a 24 to a 12 month one... I still don't fancy getting a case, but sometimes you just lose signal using the phone to browse web etc without thinking :(

I've tried a friend's HTC Desire and it definitely does some things better, the lower res screen is hard to look at initially though! - I was embarrassed when we were both on the same wi-fi network and tried to load a youtube vid at the same time, his was instant, mine just sat there doing nothing for some reason :(
Overall I prefer the iP4 and battery life but not sure I want to accept a faulty design (it is until Apple prove any firmware fix will change anything) - I figured a 12 month contract isn't so bad and I could put more on the 32 gig, just hoping it may be from a newer batch where a coating of some kind may have been applied (wishful thinking!).

I love iPhones and Apple and tried to believe nothing is wrong with my new 4. But after always going into facetime, and speaker, and hanging up, and pressing # buttons in peoples ears, I finally took mine back on the 4th for a replacement. I am totally bummed that the new one does the same thing! Definitely an issue as I have never had this problem on my old iPhones. They tried to tell me I was holding it wrong at the Apple store! Why was I not holding my old iPhone wrong for years and now I'm suddenly unable to hold a phone correctly?

Same goes for me, my 3GS is working just fine!!!!!

I'll be watching from the sidelines and might even skip the iPhone 4G all together, also considering a Droid.

For folks that do not have the iPhone 4 yet, these are legitimate concerns and I would recommend not purchasing till fixed. I sold my 3GS and will stick with the 4 and hope for a software update.

My iPhone 4 drops several calls a day and yesterday during a phone conference it embarrassed me by playing a ridiculous ring tone. The proximity sensor was possessed and my cheek must of gone to settings and started playing the ringtone (btw, why would this option be turned off during a call). I'm very disappointed on how Apple is in complete denial over these problems. This may be the beginning of a window of opportunity for competitors.

doubt a software update can fix these problems. Guess I’ll have to wait until these issues are resolved, to make my purchase :(. I’m still on my Jailbroken iPhone 3G, its time to upgrade !

Great, another iPhone 4 problem that no one I know seems to experience.

...suggesting that it may not be a universal fault...

No, really?
