My wife and I have never this problem with our 3G's but both our iPhone 4's are experiencing it. My wife was pretty pissed about it the other day and told me she was nearly ready for me to take it back to the store.

I'm going to hold out for about 10 more days before returning them both over it and the reception issues, even in cases it has worse reception than the 3G's had in our place.

My biggest fear is Apple is promising these software updates just to keep us past our 30 day window of return to lock us back in without a damn idea of when it's going to fixed.

I'll miss the display and some of the other cool features of the 4, and even some of the 3gs like compass we don't have, but I actually like using the phone portion of the iPhone too.

Lets hope the European batch will have iOS 4.1 and a coating on the steel band.

That would be nice, I would be so pissed if that happened and I was stuck without that though lol! I still haven't gotten mine from my Best Buy preorder!

Better fix it with the update coming up for reception issues

YUP!

Non issue. Just avoid holding it in that way.

Haha, I couldn't help but laugh at that! :p

This is going to be the most important software update in Apple's history.

If it works, everything will be good and Apple will save face.
If it doesn't, there's gonna be trouble.

Ya the update is needed pretty badly! This is not a small issue with the proximity sensor. My office got 15 phones and about half of them have proximity sensor issues that are driving the people at my work INSANE!

iOS4 on 3G also has proximity sensor problems

Since updating my 3G to iOS4 I have had issues while calling that I never had before. Sometimes the speaker is activated during a call, sometimes the mute function... Until I saw this thread I did not think much of it but maybe it can shed some light on the hardware/software debate of the issue: must be software.

I wish Apple would quit rushing products to market. All of the secrecy involved must make it difficult to properly test new models or something. I'm going to stick with my 3GS for now. The next iPhone release may not be the largest product release ever if this crap keeps up.

Also let me add that not only does the screen not turn back on, but it is FROZEN. you can't touch the screen at all to hang up or anything. The home button does nothing. I have to press the on/off button once it will show the lock screen but u can't
Do anything. Then you lock/unlock again THEN it works. Imagine this for every phone call

This happens to me as well!!

Big Ears!

You guys just have too big ears!
Reception for me has been as good if not slightly better than with iPhone 3 - it really is a non-issue.

I just really started noticing this as a problem last night.
I would get off the phone and be in some odd area like a game or contacts. Haha
Let's hope this is just a simple software fix. :)

Of course it will. iPhone 5 will be super magical.
Just because zombies eat brains, doesn't mean that they have any.

LOL :D

But seriously, what is the next problem we are going to hear about!?!?

In any case, I know for sure I won't be spending my money on any iDevice until fundamental changes in Apple's attitude and policy take place.

I might be a Mac/OSX fan but I am definitely not an iZombie!

Antenna issue and this sensor issue, that makes 2 problems which aren´t too big in my eyes. Apple already assured they will deal with the antenna prob.
Why should we expect other problems??
And what "fundamental change" do you expect? I do not see the need.

LOL :D

Thing is with this problem, I've had it once and yes it's a bit crap - but this is the kind of thing I can accept on a new product, little teething problems. This is what the Apple fanboys keep crying about early adoption blah blah blah... What I can't accept is the signal dropping to 0 when I hold (gently, not vice-grip) the phone in my left hand, because that is a product not fit for purpose.

Cue Apple fanboys making excuses for poor design and saying people only come here to bash the mighty Apple (which I'm sure not many of us have time for, I think Microsoft are incredibly crap but I don't search out forums to say it as I know what I'm getting for my money - with Apple I pay a premium for product which "just works"...

same issue here

i'm having the same issue... while i'm on a call speaker will kick in, or mute, or it will try and facetime someone random in my contacts. i'm hoping it's not a physical issue with the sensor bur just a tolerance threshold in the software.

Proximity sensor

I have this problem. I took it into apple and they told me there is a "batch" of phones that are bad. I wonder how many are in a batch?

I have an iPhone 3GS.
Sometimes when I take the iPhone of my ear the display stays black and I have to push the home button or so (can't remember excatly if home or lock cause it really didn't bother me that much)
So I would say this is an iOS4 related problem.

I have this problem sometimes on my 3G as well....

...so don't blame it all on the iPhone 4 and iOS4.
It's been an issue for a long time and nobody cared until the iPhone 4 showed the same problem.
Can't wait to get the iPhone 4.... :)

I'm having this problem. It's really starting to annoy me!

Hopefully a software update will correct it.

Amazingly there are other phone manufacturers who make amazing phones without antenna or proximity sensor issues.

Yet people are so blinded by the Apple reality distortion field that they are simply unwilling to even try the competition.

Dont just assume Apple is always best.. Atleast go try a high spec Android phone like the Droid X / Incredible / Evo 4G etc. Im not saying you will like it, but you owe it to yourself to make an informed decision rather than being an Apple apologist for the rest of your life.

*stands up and gives a round of applause*

Seriously this is the best comment i have read about in discussions about the iPhone issues. Couldn't have put it better myself.

When you recommend that iPhone users try something else its often met with a defensive comment.... but really why not give it a proper try and see what the alternatives are (and im not just taking about a quick 2min test run in a shop, find out a little bit about what other phones can actually do for you).

This isn't a 'vs' war, its the fact that you guys spend your hard earned cash on a product that seems to have a string of problems, when there are alternatives out there (often cheaper) that will do the job just as well.

And how exactly do you know that people haven't tried the competition? Don't just assume that you know what other people have or haven't done and keep your simplistic advice to yourself. Oh and "apologist" doesn't mean what you think it does (try "loyalist").

If I was lucky to own Apple stock I think I'd be selling it this morning.

Lovely phone, except when I kept putting someone on speakerphone with my ear, and the reception problem, my 3G was better than this new phone... both major problems as they don't affect just me but the clients I'm speaking to.

Some minor issues with a phone I've been able to put up with in the past, but when the issues affect things that are live e.g talking to someone, then that is when it is a real problem, at the end of the day, the device is supposed to primarily a phone (the clue is in the name)

See what i mean about defensive comments?!

The guy only said that people should try out the alternatives... there are many people who do not bother looking into alternatives simply because they 'just have to' have an iPhone as they are told by everyone how great they are.
