For me, the proximity issue is the biggest problem with the phone and if it doesn't get fixed within the 30 day return period, I'll return the phone because of it. It messes with 75% of my calls. I'm sure it's a problem with every phone out there. Some people just don't notice it because they hold their phones tight up against their ear at all times. I'm thinking this is software fixable. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Thou, Sir, are a genius.

If you want to be even smarter, wait for rev Z.

:apple:

I feel like a sucker everytime I stare at this 23" cinema display. :( Stupid power brick. Just bought a new one less than a year ago and it is already acting up. It is now "un-supported" in their book. Thank god I bought it used.

The more I think about it, I am beginning to have a bad taste in my mouth when I think of apple. Ah, what the heck. All I have to do is go use a windows machine or simply think of using one and I will be cured for the time being.

I've had this problem since day one, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one. I did the hard reset and it fixed the problem for maybe a day, then I just started having it again

Also let me add that not only does the screen not turn back on, but it is FROZEN. you can't touch the screen at all to hang up or anything. The home button does nothing. I have to press the on/off button once it will show the lock screen but u can't
Do anything. Then you lock/unlock again THEN it works. Imagine this for every phone call

My solution for the sensor issue

ok Not sure whether this would help anyone or not but I had the same issue where the sensor wouldn't work when I'm making or receiving a call. The screen wouldn't respond and I have to use on/off button to end the call. Then I found out that the issue was with the Belkin case I got for my iphone 4. Once I removed the case, my sensor worked fine.

Had this problem...

Happened to me with my iP4, right out of the box.

Performed the simple reset per the article, and problem solved.

Sheesh, lot's of ever-growing molehills out there. Chill out.

WARNING TO ANYONE WHO USES A PASSCODE: DOING THIS "RESET SETTINGS" will take away your timed passcode locking options and leave you only with "immediate" lockdown. VERY annoying.

real cool that Apples "fix" for this issue f%^ks up the phone even more.

Well, OF COURSE it resets this. Duh!
It was pretty tough to fix. Took me all of 15 seconds. Sheesh.

This is why I always wait for rev E... :D

I waited in line on day 1 for an original iPhone, still have it, and have never ever had any of these problems or actually any problem of any kind with it ever.

It seems Apple's quality control seems to be going down the drain with the increased volume in sales of its products.

Proximity Sensor screwed up

Glad this is coming up as an issue since I thought I was going mad. I have had the original iPhone since 2007 and never once had this issue and now from the day I have been using the iphone 4 it is acting up. The worst thing that it did was actually call some one else while putting my original caller on hold.

I had to stop myself from throwing this phone onto the wall.

I understand that sometimes companies make mistakes and release products that are less than perfect and early adopters of these products take the risk. Hell I have taken a risk with more than one Apple product.

But the attitude of Apple this time around has left a bad taste and so the only thing I can do is to show my displeasure by returning this product. Hopefully enough people will do it to actually make Apple realize that they need to fix the mistakes rather than provide explanations.

Switching to Nexus One in 2 days. Looking forward to the next generation of the Apple iPhone. :)

Just to provide some balance, no issues with my iPhone4. I do use a case, though, a Belkin Grip Vue. So I might have the reception issue, but I've never seen it.

Somehow, I don't think you are.

So glad I wasn't an early adopter for this round. Especially since there will be no early upgrade option next year for the version of the iPhone that ACTUALLY WORKS. Plus it will be on Verizon by then (thus the early upgrade option now).

Feel sorry for all the beta testers out there stuck with this 'phone'. Really sad.

You mean for the next iPhone. You are mistaken there my friend. I was looking forward to this phone for months and looking at rumor websites like this every day for a new scoop about the iPhone 4.

I am very disappointed this time but I love the user interface of the iOS and apart from the edge network and inability of GPS on my iPhone 2G, I have no other complaints.

So, I will seriously look at Apple again next year when they have a new phone. Till then, I will play around with Android.

3Gs

It's funny, I don't recall this many complaints about the 3Gs when it came out. As a matter of fact the only real complaints I heard was it didn't have a flash for the camera, and it didn't have a front facing camera. Great phone otherwise.

Yeah, just like Windows. Doesn't work? Restart. Still doesn't work? Tough ****.

Geeez, I know. What's the big deal?? Bunch a babies!

I have had major issues with this. I have to use a Bluetooth if I don't want this happening.

i asked this unanswered question a few times.........

"has anyone tested the bluetooth performance, holding it the corrrect way, vs death grip"? does signal also drop as with wifi etc?

Excellent idea. Next years iphone will be much better (i.e. it will work). And the jiggly cheap home button will be better too. Till then, stick with the rock solid 3GS or try something new that at least makes calls and is on a good network.

iPhone $4!?

Although it's aesthetically pretty IMHO. iPhone 4 is my worse iPhone ever hands down! If the problem is just a firmware update we could have the update already considering all the engineers that Apple got. I believe that this is a hardware design flaw where that Apple cannot do anything about it. Apple might release an update and do some tweaking to fool us around that the iPhone works fine on the UI. I think the government should start investigating about this issue and possibly force Apple to recall the product. It already happened to Toyota...

Really makes you think if Apple software engineers, internal developers, staff and top brass are actually using their phones to the fullest they can possibly push it to not just the vanilla feature set.

Apple Confirmed the Issue

I received my iPhone 4 last Thursday. In addition to the antenna issue, I have the proximity issue. After visiting the Apple Store in University Village, Seattle, the Genius representative confirmed it's a known issue that "corporate" was working on with a software fix. She offered to return it on the spot if I wanted, as she said all retail stores have been authorize to accept iPhone returns (ordered online, through AT&T, or other) at this point.

It's frustrating Apple thinks a promised software update is enough to assuage customers. They go-to-market with a luxury device, with insanely lofty marketing claims, and the reality is the device hasn't been tested. They are growing too fast.

I'm returning mine and going back to my slow and steady 3G.

totally technique.....everyone holds phone in a different fashion.... apple moving the sensor ever so slightly increases the possibility of sensor not being over ear....very little margin of error. I have returned one phone to best buy in Montgomery AL and bought another at ATT in Birmingham.... same problem. My friend bought one first day and has had no problems... I used his and have problems. He Hold his in a more forward fashion and I tend to keep the phone on the back of the ear. I love the phone and hope for a fix soon!
