Stoked for this; but I can't help but be a tad pessimistic about how OS X's sub-part driver's will handle these games.

But but but but but but.... no one wants to play games on a Mac! That's what consoles are for. *listens out for all the back-pedalling*.

The 9400M G is prime GPU power.

It is enough for many games, if you are a game probably you have an MBP, iMac, Mac Pro with a discrete, more powerfull gfxcard.

This is a great news, i will try to don't get crazy until 12th May!

There is a dramatic loss of value in Apple's mobile line up beyond the MacBook in my opinion. I don't consider Apple's desktops as viable for my needs.

Hahah; you can't be serious?

I work in an Apple Premium reseller and after a demo, all loves mac even who was thinking it was a stupid os, anyway a large increasing of users ask for Counter Strike / Steam, usually young guys and they are not happy with crossover/Bootcamp solution. So i think this statement in true.
For sure Steam is a important software to have.

I've been following half-life since 97 when pc gamer featured a small article while was still in development. Any thing valve related has my attention.

A friends of mine use an iMac 24" 8800GT since many years now especially for gaming. Last iMacs have good gfx card too. they may not be the top on the market but 99% don't need that gfx power.

Sure I have no doubt Steam on the Mac will pull over some more switchers (your example is a good one), but a "solid nail in the coffin"? Uhhh no.

The iMac never had an 8800GT.

The 8800GT is nearly a three year old part and the 4850 is nearing two.

That's really because you already own a MacBook...
Bad Company 2 isn't under OS X either and lets not consider doing so on a GeForce 320M much less the 9400M G.

If you work for a reseller then you definitely should have customers coming in asking you if OS X does somethings that they need for <insert need here> and I guarantee you that they stumped you.

I used to work for an apple reseller myself. Sometimes, OS X just doesn't cut. Example, much of AutoDesk's products do not run in OS X (AutoCAD for example). You have to offer a bootcamp/virtualization solution to them. It just doesn't cut it.

OS X won't come close to replacing Windows in majority of households and businesses until developers get serious about supporting the platform. While Valve moving in this direction is a positive step, we have a long way to go, and I just don't see that happening anytime soon, if at all.

Come on, you know only tech freaks like us can A, tell the difference B, discern from model numbers.

How does that relate to "That's only because you already own a MacBook"?

Many years? The 8800GT has only been around for about two and a half years (was only released in late '07 around oct/nov on the PC side; dunno how long it's been on the Mac side). With that said, yes the 8800 series is definitely having an amazing run (myself I just replaced my 8800GTS in march); but with the latest round of games (Bad Company 2, Metro 2033 for example) it's run has basically come to an end. Also, has the iMac even had an 8800GT in it?

It had an 8800GS at one point.

They claim to work for an Apple reseller as it is. I can terrify nearly every Apple store plebeian short of the Geniuses.

The replacements don't offer incentive to upgrade from my Macbook. Bad Company 2 is now my minimum requirement for purchasing a new notebook and the M11x looks like the appropriate choice in order to run this application. I'll wait for a Core i5 UM + nVidia Optimus update though.

8800M GTS

i just want to say how much i love the "steam play" concept... buy once, play anywhere. all software should be like this.

it is absolutely ridiculous that i have to buy 2 different versions of any Adobe (and most other's) product. insane.

i bought photoshop. it should work on my computer. WTF difference does it make which computer?

and don't get me started on "per seat licenses" ... it's MY application, you idiots, not this stupid terminal's!

Maybe if you would respect the intellectual property rights of these hard working developers just a little bit you would understand.

Ah; for the record the 8800GS Apple used was quite a bit different from a proper 8800GT; having half the stream processors and slower clocks.

The 8800GS was a real card offered by nVidia.

The 'proper 8800GT' is a misnomer as its just a G92 core, and at the time the fastest one was a 8800GTS G92 512MB. Plus they never seemed to have a big performance difference at all.

8800M GTS

Nope, at one point Apple offered a 24" iMac with 3.06Ghz CPU and an 8800GS.

Yes sorry it is a 8800GS, it is a typo since i had 8800GT on my Mac Pro. My friend had that mac since 2-2,5 years and it is still ok for gaming. mac is good for gaming, probably better than most "normal user pc" but high end gfx card are usually only on Mac Pro and not always the lastest ones.

The point is, most games plays good on OSX, OSX give also a little boost on some games due to being faster than many windows version, the BIG problem on OSX are drivers! Our 3D drivers are not that good and in many games we get less performance than in Windows. But i think and i hope this will change.

Sure, and we have a lot of users using AutoCad (Autodesk product) and they enjoy it in Parallel, no complaining ever. Not same thing for Steam games, most users don't want boot camp and parellel due its nature give bad performance. Don't worry i know my work ;-)
