I don't know why you foilks are getting so excited about this  Computer gaming is dying. People are abandoning PCs in favor of consoles en masse! All Steam is trying to do by getting into the Mac market is buy time.

More steam accounts in the world than Xbox live ones. Making your statement not only a little off, but way, way off

Edit; over 25 million for Steam, over 21 for Xbox live

This news is a "game changer" as steve would put it. Absolutely HUGE blow to microsoft, Im sure more developers will follow. Only MS games will not be on the mac over the next couple years.

Now come on apple, give us icore and ATI in the 21.5 inch imac.

Game changer for Apple and its community? Without doubt. Game changer for the Windows gaming community and a "HUGE blow to microsoft"? I wouldn't say so at all.

Apple still doesn't give two ***** about gaming; and as long as Steve is there they never will. MS has proven with the Xbox 360 that they aren't afraid to pay for exclusives. If my some remote and (amazingly) small chance this move by Valve becomes a thorn in the side for MS, they'll just pull out the wallet and that will be that.

They will never buy out Valve for sure.

For Autocad, you could use Fusion's Unity mode (or Parallels' equivalent) and Autocad would look like just another OS X application. It's totally smooth and seamless. As long as it's not a game, needing to use a Windows-only application is no reason to not switch to OS X. It's just such a non-issue now.

thanks. will pass on the info

I know, im saying they won't buy out Valve specific games.
Portal 2, HL series, CS, TF, DOD, L4d, etc

Although I agree its highly unlikely; then again this move by Valve also came out of nowhere. Not long ago most would say the likelihood of steam/source on the mac being "unlikely" as being very modest. I mean Gabe has openly mocked apple for ages.

So says Paul Thurrott.
I respect his opinion and I do listen to the Windows Weekly podcast. He does talk a lot of about his gaming experiences on the Xbox 360.

Microsoft has done a fine job with the community, store, and games. Sadly, I don't think it can replace the flexibility of a computer and the interface.

this is great news but....

for us mbp owners w/ the dedicated 9600M GT, it doesn't really matter since we have to restart in Performance mode to get decent framerates for the valve games like css.

so its just like restarting in windows to play games...

please correct me if i'm wrong. and i hope i am!

But this is a move in terms of expansion. They are moving forward.
Valve is the number one distributor in the world of electronic game sales. They are a huge company with more user accounts than Xbox live.

They may use Microsoft's platform (until now) but it doesn't mean they like them.

In fact if you look at past news, they don't like MS at all. =]

I just keep mine set on high performance all the time...
still get like 4 - 5 hours.

I know how huge steam is, I love and use it daily; but comparing one gaming console to steam? If you ask me that's a weak comparison. Although I don't doubt they aren't all that fond of MS, doesn't really mean much. The real money is on the MS platform and more then likely always will be.

WTF?

Also. It's awesome that I can enter my HL1 HL2 and Counter Strike PC keys and download the mac versions for free! =D

Do you have a source for this wild guess?

The correct terminology is "hand in hand" by the way.

Ah yes, sorry typed fast.

Valve: Apple aided in bringing Steam, games to Mac
updated 04:25 pm EST, Mon March 8, 2010Apple notoriously hesitant about Mac games

Apple participated in bringing Valve games and the Steam platform to Macs, says John Cook, Valve's director of Steam development. Cook elaborates that Valve has been "working with them [Apple] a bunch" while growing accustomed to Mac development. "They've been a great partner so far and we look forward to growing our relationship with them over time," he tells AppleInsider.
Apple has been notoriously unsupportive of the Mac game industry, typically apathetic towards providing gaming-level hardware or software frameworks. Valve itself has complained of being unable to get Apple's help in the past. Cook now comments however that the Mac is a "very attractive platform for entertainment as a service," and that Valve has been cooperating with Apple and videocard makers to improve OpenGL support, both for first- and third-party games.

While no Valve iPhone or iPad titles are in development, Cook does add that the initial wave of Mac products in April should be joined by some simultaneous third-party releases. "Each game will have its own performance requirements in terms of CPUs, memory, and graphics and we expect they will be comparable to running on Windows. The Steam client itself is very lightweight," the director notes.

Xbox Live accounts are for active accounts.

Steam accounts are for any login created on Steam.

I mean its big as well, don't get me wrong, but its hard to get great grasp based on company announced numbers.

Read my post above...looks like apple helped in making this happen. I think previously apple just didn't care.

Computer gaming is dying.

No it's not, it's just moving to digital distribution. What's dying is retail sales.

People are abandoning PCs in favor of consoles en masse!

No they aren't; the only way you'd get that impression is if you only looked at retail stores and ignored everything else.

So says Paul Thurrott.

I don't usually do this, but: LOL.

This is great news! The only games I really play on the PC are those developed by Valve, Blizzard and Simbin. If Simbin announces that they'll be bringing over their excellent racing games to the Mac too, I just have to spring for a Mac Pro.

I'm really impressed with Valve right now. The fact that users who have already bought the PC versions of their games will be able to play the Mac versions for no additional cost is a very classy move. I'm sure there are plenty of companies out there who would "stick it" to their users.

The best part is now I won't have to buy Windows 7 for Boot Camp, I'll just limp along with the 2 hour time limit imposed by the expired release candidate until April.

Assuming the performance is up to par in the Mac side this just freed up 100 GB (Boot Camp partition) and saved me $130 that I can now spend on more Valve games like Portal 2 and Episode 3 when they come out.
