Pressing my F4 brings up:

elitist

adjective
favoring, advocating, or restricted to an elite

Ok, I wasn't going to copy the whole thing. So what is wrong with that? I'm referring to the favoring aspect of the definition. And I'm really waaaaay beyond my English 100. :)

If you actually knew any Inuit, and you told them that, they would laugh at you. You aren't using the word properly. The Inuit don't consider themselves elite, or better than other Canadians. Canadians don't associate the word elite or elitist with Inuit. I don't know a single Canadian who would say: "Those Inuit think they're so much better than the rest of us."

If you want to say that the symbol was chosen due to favortism, that's fine. That's your opinion. You're just not using the word 'elitist' properly.

As I've pointed out, I think it was used because of the symbol's history in Vancouver and Canada. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pd86ov04mqI&feature=PlayList&p=6BC3BA22D302DF5D&index=36

Anyway, I don't care to talk to you about this anymore. It's ruining the thread.

I'm looking forward to the Opening Ceremonies tonight. My cousin was at the rehersal last night, and he said that it was amazing.

And just to put some perspective... it's just a logo. If we judge the games based on the logo, London 2012 could already be the worst Olympic games in history. :p hehe

Where are you guys watching the Opening Ceremonies?

1. WOW the London logo is crap.
2. I'm ordering up a pizza and watching at home. Unless my regressive roommate decides to watch something else. It's his TV, and I'm just staying here until I get work. If he decides to watch Glenn Beck or some other drivel, I will hope it's being simulcast online.

Wow guys! Did you see the Google home page!?

That seriously just made my day. Wicked!

Thanks for the note, I always use the search window in Firefox and never see the home page.

As usual, our issue is due to miscommunication. :) I was not at all referring to Inuit people being elitist. The reference was to the selection process.

And I'm also more than happy to close this off. We've hijacked this thread long enough. Let us enjoy the games!

Cheers!

Are you in Canada? If so, CTVolympics.ca is pretty much doing online broadcasts of every single Olympic moment over the next 2 weeks! I think NBC is doing some online live stuff too.

I have heard some interesting information about the Open Ceremonies. Stop reading if you don't to hear this!!!!

Basically, apparently the national anthem has been changed in a way that no Canadian can sing to it. At first I was mad about this because I think the anthem is so important.. but listening to the radio people have been constantly saying it's beautiful. One guy said that it was the best rendition of them anthem he has ever heard.

Nope, I'm just a Canadian in training. :) I've been to Vancouver (Chilliwack) and Ottawa (Kanata) and loved both.

On the anthem, the best rendition of the Canadian anthem that I've heard was done by Geddy Lee. He sang it at an celebrity softball game that was televised on MTV. After the US anthem was sung like some sort of Broadway tune, Geddy sang unaccompanied, and it was fantastic. We looked like a bunch of circus idiots after how nicely he sang the Canadian anthem.

Sorry to bring a damper to this thread but breaking news...

Georgian athlete Nodar Kumaritashvili reportedly killed in Luge training at Whistler a few moments ago. CTV is still reporting he has has life-threatening injuries, but multiple, trustworthy sources (NBC Sports, Toronto Star) are reporting he has been killed.

They played the video on CTV news when it happened and it's horrific. He crashed at 148km/h on the fastest track in the world right into a medal supporting beam. I saw them perform cpr right on the spot.

Wow that's sad. That sport seems unnecessarily dangerous, so little protective gear at such high speeds.

Yeah it makes no sense to have giant metal beams on the fastest turn in the course. At least they should have some padding. They will most likely build up the turn to make it higher by about a foot. I've seen them do that in the past.

CTV still not reporting it but literally every major news outlet has. I have a feeling they don't want to ruin the spirit of this torch relay. Personally though, I think he deserves the coverage of how dangerous this sport is.

EDIT: Just as I posted this CTV is finally reporting it.

All training will be suspended until further notice. Official statement coming from the IOC at 1:30 PST

You would think they would do more testing on these runs, right? Can't they load the sleds up with just a dead weight and see where they may need to do any track adjustments? Just imagine how the other competitors are feeling now....

No, you can't.... there is a lot of skill required to stay on track. Training runs aren't just for the athletes, the track is also being tuned. Its a tragedy that this track claimed a life while it was being tested. Such a tragedy. After watching the video I don't think padding on beam would have been enough.

You're right. The padding might not have prevented an injury, but it would have lessened the impact so that he might survive the collision.

I didn't know those tracks can't be tested in some safe way. That is too bad.

Well, it appears there was a great deal of concern voiced over the safety of this track, as much as a year ago. It seems astonishing that those concerns weren't taken more seriously.

I think it would have lessened the blow, such that he might only have broke his neck though.

Was a good ceremony till the 4th pillar didn't pop at the end.

Great special effects! The last pillar wasn't that big of a deal, IMO.

Three things.

1. Best rendition of O'Canada I've ever heard. I can't believe she is only 16.

2. Amazing and raw poem. Love it!!

3. Nothing more Canadian than a hockey player with the torch in the back of a pick up truck!

We were watching the CTV (may their technicians be licked by amorous camels!!) online coverage.... no cable here at home... and CTV cut the feed right as the pillars were popping up at the end... who the was final torch bearer???? I can't believe CTV cut the coverage right at 9pm! To go to their news feed, starting with the days events....

Gretzky. It's Canada, who else would it be? ;)

I've got my place on the sofa staked out for these Olympics. Just tell me who to root for and I'll start cheering.

For reference, here is the thread from Turin 2006.

I enjoyed the whole ceremony. There were a few too many clever or sarcastic toned comments from Costas, et. al. for me though.

The Canadians put on a great show. Nobody can beat the Chinese for what was done, considering the budget. But I think it demonstrated Canada's diversity very nicely.

Now, on with the games!

I think this is the official NBC broadcast site with live feeds and recordings

http://www.nbcolympics.com

Far as I've seen, it looks like they all seem to go up to HD at 3.5 mbps when you full screen them.

It's pretty cool. It looks like a DVR sort of like the Windoes Media Center a little bit. This skipping is really fast too. Like if there was a 2 hour video and you click in the middle, it's only a short delay. Only problem is that there seems to be like a frame with a banner that you can't get rid of.

They might delay some "TV broadcast" live events however, I dunno.
