If there is no AT&T exclusivity contract, then my bet is on T-Mobile, as it's just a tiny 50c power amplifier that needs to be added and the baseband processor already supports it.

More competition = lower prices? :D

Apple was very aggressive on their introductory level pricing.

Going to be hard to beat $499 for a comparable device, and obviously more with 3G.

I guess that is where Verizon comes in, because except for the wireless part what exactly do they have to offer. They won't do the hardware and Google does the software.

I would add, this would be more evidence against the iPhone coming to Verizon any time soon.

Coattail ride much? I mean if Apple just announced the iCar, we would be sure to hear from Google a month later about how they are working on the Cardroid.

How long until these tablets are refereed to as the "iPad killer"?

iPod killer - still waiting
iPhone killer - still waiting
iPad killer - maybe third times the charm?

Apple's getting good at this game.... they don't even realize that iPad is not the threat... it's what Apple is setting up to do in 2 years when there are 5-10 million of these (and how many iPhones and Touches) out there...that's the threat. The key to Apple's success is the MEDIA partnerships and they spend years nursing those in advance to make it look "easy". Getting legal media on the other devices is always a "second thought" or it's such a narrow band of publishers.

These other companies aren't far enough ahead of the game, and worse they're not CONSISTENT. In the many years of iPod/iPhone/iPad how many times has Microsoft made OEMs and Users throw out their hardware and purchased media for the "next sure thing?" Sony has been just as bad for even longer.

iPad was certainly in the "works" before iPhone was even for sale, Apple didn't release it until they had a 2-3 year plan in place to do more things with it. Other companies just aren't thinking like that, except maybe Microsoft... but everybody knows Microsoft is out only for themselves now, so OEMS don't line up like they used too.

the android tablet is going to be just like the android phones. Usable but not very polished.

Thats how microsoft won the OS war, people want cheap stuff.. they are ready to put up with Virus and crashes for so many years (i heard win7 is better).

Apple's BOM for the iPad is allegedly $300, give or take for the different models. Seems like there's some room to undercut Apple.

... it's what Apple is setting up to do in 2 years ...
It's always what Apple is setting up to do, Jobs definitely thinks ahead. I would add that he doesn't care if Apple has the biggest market share. The iPhone doesn't and Apple certainly isn't the largest computer maker. He keeps his eye on the real goal, it's a business, businesses make money. And as long as he keeps producing stuff that works well, I'll keep giving him a bit of my money.

anyone in here have an ipad?

i played with one this weekend at the apple store. it's actually a lot nicer than i thought it was going to be.

*wonders why Apple would partner with a company collaborating on a iPad killer*

Because it just bloatware, by the time a real Ipad Killer comes out we will be on iphone os 6.

Ipad ver. 1 is all we have, imagine what ver. 2 will be like and then ver. 3.

I love to see some competition, and if its cheap that fine also, those that want quality will get apple and those who don't can get something else. I see no problem.

I'm not sure i understand why Google would "team up" with Verizon (or any other telco for that matter). If a Google tablet is similar to the iPad (like Android phones is similar to iPhone), then what strategic contribution would Verizon have (other than the obvious... sales subsidies, distribution, advertising, etc)? Am I missing something?

IMO, ATT didn't really 'team up' with Apple to create the iPad... Apple more or less 'had all the cards'. _If_ Google came up with 'just another tablet', then really, the telco doesn't add any strategic value. (that's a big assumption, since we don't know what product Google is going to come out with)

In otherwords, Verizon needs Google, Google doesn't need Verizon. In fact, looking at Google's history with Motorola; if I were Verizon, I'd look at that contract twice.

For Apple, competition bringing lower prices is a myth (look at the new macbook pros as an example. Older tech at a very high price and they sell well).

Exactly, more competition equals more $$ for marketing and advertising, it has to come from somewhere, right?

are you serious? lol

I really would like Google to come out with a worthwhile tablet, but I have a feeling I'll be sticking with iPads for a while to come

I'm sure all these companies now wanting their own tablet - months ago said it's a silly idea. It'll never work! There's no need for a new market.
Nice to see them wrong!

Google is annoying me recently, they're just blatantly copying every idea thrown out there... Oh well. I guess.

I'm still waiting to get my iPad, not long now though :)

I cant wait to see what google supposedly has in store. Like others have said Apple plans things well in advance. They don't create a product and then just open the flood gates. I'm sure the next several versions of iPad will be significantly better than the current version. It's a business conscious decision. Everyone else has made their game strategies to watch Apple be the test dummy and then follow suit. Android is no where near iPhone OS. It is already running into the malware issues most expect from a more "open" OS. I personally find it clunky and unnecessarily complicated. Not only will Google have to bring their A game on the software side but also the hardware side. Good luck designing something more perfect for portability and with as awesome a keyboard as the iPad without copying.

agreed, I'm not sure what Verizon would have to offer.
Apple is selling a $599 iPhone for say $299 and getting ATT to subsidize the rest in exchange for a 2-3 year contract.

I guess Google can do the same with Verizon... say create $600 tablet and get Verizon to subsidize some of it, bring the price down to say $399??? Just pondering.
(of course, Apple can follow suit too.)
