The droid is nice but I wish people would stop saying it's on the better network. No network is the best everywhere and it all depends on where you are.

You can say that again. I had Verizon and had a hard time getting service, they said we should because we live right next to a tower. They lied, I met a tech that worked for Verizon he said that we lived TOO CLOSE to the tower and it went right over us. I get better service and coverage with AT&T, though I still like Verizon better (customer service) I had to go with ATT.

Competiton(spelling!?) is good and all, but I'm just getting really tired with all this copy-cat business. Whatever happened to innovation? Or does Apple have a patent on that as well?

LOL

First, I don't necessarily believe that this is a zero-sum game where the fact that Verizon might work with Google on a tablet automatically precludes a Verizon iPhone. I am skeptical we might see one soon, but it's not because of Google-Verizon collusion.

Second, I think the big factor on any Google-Verizon tablet project is going to be price. The fact that you can get into an iPad for $499 with no additional service fees and into an iPad with relatively cheap data and no contract for $629 is huge. Since this class of device is not like a phone - something that everybody needs and have, if this Google-Verizon collaboration requires a data plan and contract there will be some problems. I don't see people willing to pay for 2 expensive data plans.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

Will this leave countries with gsm without an official Google tablet?

Oh wow really google is going to work on an ipad like device as well?

*alt tabs back to apple store page and continues to finish off 64GB iPad 3G order.*
;)

Another unannounced (formally), undemo-ed product. Wake me when it arrives. By then, Apple will have moved on. As Jobs said, they're skating to where the puck is going to be, not where it is. Meanwhile, everyone else is skating to where it is.

To the other poster re Verizon, I too am tired of AT&T getting all the blame all the time. The fact of the matter is that they all suck - just in different places. I forget what movie it was - an end of the world at midnight thing - when a guy's phone goes out and he says, "well, the never really worked anyway." So true.

The article reads like this:

Hi. We're Verizon and Android. Apple is a pioneer that has created and legitimized the tablet market. Therefore, one day, we're going to make a tablet too. We hope to make a lot of money by releasing an innovative product.

I can't stand using my wife's Android phone. It's buggy, slow, freezes, and feels cheap.

But it was $29 with contract so she got it. This is EXACTLY what killed off the Apple back in the 80's: cheap.

Android is pretty crap, but it is cheap and it is "good enough".

I have a bad feeling about this.

s.

I also have an Android product in addition to my iPhone 3GS. It's awful. I don't know people can stand the software on the thing. Android is truly a hype machine.

Just a thought

If Apple and Verizon team up to release an iPhone, and Verizon is considered to be the #1 service provider, this could truly compete heavily with some of these newer smartphones. In this way, I think that a Verizon iPhone is a lot more dangerous to Google, than an Android tablet is to Apple.

However, I agree that the way Verizon has positioned themselves since releasing the aggressive anti-AT&T ads, really casts some doubt on a Verizon iPhone.

I guess we will have to see how things go on June 7.

I dunno, i still have a problem with Google being on Apple's board and then popping out the Android and now a tablet. And now Verizon wants the iPhone after turning it down. They can't have it and so they are determined to destroy it along with Google. These are not the kinds of people I'd want as my partners.

I sincerely hope this is a joke.

I have the HTC Incredible and I LOVE it. Fast/responsive/multitasking.

I love Apple products, but Android is just hard to beat now... Faster hardware/open source/etc...

One major difference between the Android and iPhone: I don't find a NEED to jailbreak (besides Wifi tethering. Most of the good apps on Android are free and I can do most everything I would ever want to out of the box, etc...

But this is not an iPhone OS vs Android thread...

Competition is good, and everyone should welcome it.

This public Verizon/Google partnership has cast some doubt on the possibility of an Verizon iPhone in the next month, but Business Insider's Dan Frommer suggests that this announcement was simply a negotiation tactic by Verizon who may be still be in talks with Apple about the next iPhone.

This was simply a negotiation tactic by Verizon with Apple? LMAO ... tactic to do what END NEGOTIATIONS with Apple? Verizon FAIL! Steve Jobs has made it very clear that he wasn't going to let Google threaten the iPhone and I am sure he feels the same way about the iPad.

Mark my words now ... this backs up what I have been hoping since the lauch of the iPhone ... an iPhone on Tmobile in the US!

Also let me point out Tmobile's plan to have the fastest data network in the US will be in effect this summer! Connect the dots people!

According to Tmobile wiki - "Upgrades to HSPA+ are planned for 2009 through 2010 which may boost average download speeds near 7.2Mbps to a 21Mbps[citation needed]. Their HSPA+ footprint may exceed nearly 21Mbps by the end of 2010[citation needed]."

I have a few more revelations that point to this also!

It's no joke. Try an Android for yourself. My broker app on the iPhone is available for Android. Are the apps at parity? Nope. Not by a country mile. Android is pert much un polished junk at this point. I can't stand the whole os let alone the apps. Have you tried any of them? Seriously the iPhone software is much better. The whole experience on the iPhone is much better.

The Android has nice specs on paper, but in reality it leaves much to be desired. Just my opinion, but I can't stand it.

Competition is good, but not when it is from the members of your own board. Yeah Eric is gone, but let's be real-- what was he doing on their board? Being a partner or a competitor. His job was to be a partner.

I don't like Verizon's tactics. They don't act like anyone I'd want to partner with.

Yes, I own an HTC Incredible, as I mentioned.

Before, nothing really stood out to me in terms of what was available in the "smartphone" (I still feel weird saying that) market.

Things changed when I heard about then tried the Incredible. It is very light, amazing screen, incredible specs, and just an awesome experience.

What do you not like about the Apps? You can pretty much get everything on the Android that you can with the iPhone.

I also enjoy the three extra buttons that you don't get with the iPhone: Search, Menu, and Back. The back is the MOST useful button I've ever seen on a phone. It works in every app that navigates through multiple screens. The search feature finds anything on your phone you are looking for. The menu button allows me to quickly access settings without looking for it through my list of apps.

The hideousness with Android, and also the beauty, is that any manufacturer and developer can come along and improve and alter Android to their liking. I think in HTC's case, they did very well with the HTC sense added on to the stock OS. I love it! Everything is so smooth and clear and actually easy to use.

I have an iPod touch, iPad, and have tried iPhones (which are just iPod touches with a phone). I HAVE to say that this phone in my hand (the HTC) rivals if not BEATS the iPhone in every aspect (design/functionality/ease of use/weight/etc...)

Although multitasking is coming to the iPhone, the multitasking on here is so great and fluid and just runs so fast. There is absolutely no delay between switching between apps. It is instant!

I love all the OS's and competition is obviously good. I'll have to say that I am a bit partial to Android just because Google didn't choose to close the doors on their OS.

Again, the problem with Android is that you must weed through the bad phones to the "ok" phones to the great ones. I think I have found one of the great ones, and only expect it to get better.

Get TD Ameritrade on both platforms and tell me that the iPhone version isn't a decade ahead of the android. What app on Android do you believe is better on the droid than the iPhone?

I'm not so worried about specs. I'm worried about useful apps. See the Wall Street Journal on the iPhone. The street mobile. Deliveries for tracking packages. Etc etc

Agreed

I agree! I was trying to be as diplomatic as I could. I think that a lot of the less educated customers would pick the best phone on their provider, rather than to switch providers for the iPhone.

If iPhone comes to a large provider, customers may pick iPhone over the many other choices. It's debatable, but a Verizon iPhone could potentially marginalize all other smartphones. But, I could be wrong.

I guess, the questions are:

1. Is the Verizon/Apple competition real, or just playing out more dramatically in the media?

2. Does a Verizon iPhone make sense to Apple, long-term?

3. Is the AT&T exclusive, which helped to simplify Apple's iPhone marketing over the first three years, now hit a point where it's limiting the iPhone's growth?

You are arguing a developer problem, not an OS problem. The OS is plenty capable to do everything the iPhone OS can, its just that some apps are not up to the standard that the iPhone's are. Apps like "Shazam" should be identical though. Not sure if iPhone has "Where" or not either.

There is a UPS mobile App. I'm sure there is a FedEx one as well.

I think they both have really good apps. Obviously there are going to be some differences there. I do everything that I need/want to do on my Droid everyday, so I don't have much to worry about. I'm pleased with the browsing experience, speed, etc...

I know the App Store has more apps...probably has a lot to do with it.

Honestly, I think Apple wanted their own cell brand. But rather than go that far decided partnering with an existing carrier would be better. I thout it would have been a good idea to buy a major position in Sprint while their stock was just over a dollar a share. Now it's closer to $4. If it were up to me, i wouldn't be on any of them but my own.

Your point about growth is well made though. If AT&T exclusivity ends, then I think it would be time to simply open it to all the US carriers. I wouldn't want to give Verizon any edge after what they did.

It's easy to sit back and see this from the consumer point of view. But I own a little slice of Apple. Actually I own a little AT&T and Verizon as well. Still if I turned down a potential partner for my business and then that same business started to bad-mouth me in tv ads, I'd not appreciate it at all. I like to do business with people who will help me. Let's not forget, Apple offered the iPhone to Verizon. They said no. Now they don't like the situation so they bad-mouth Apple in a attempt to pressure them. I'd not want to help them at all. I'd want to help to the people that supported me when I asked for support.

But because I do believe Verizon will eventually get the iPhone and their stock is so low it's yielding me 6.5% in dividends I bought some. Still they're scumbags.
