There is no monthly discount for being on a device payment plan if you use one of these new Verizon Plan options. The only way you get that discount is if you are still on a More Everything plan (where your device access fee is double the Verizon Plan).

Yes, you are correct ... but I am on the More Everything plan and not leaving it. The new plans do not work for me. I used a double-your-data promo a while back and get 30gb of data for $130 ... plus I have other promos for 4 additional gig of data. It would cost me way more if I go on one of the new plans. This would work for those on the More Everything plans who still pay $40 per line access fee ... apparently not for everyone else.

I had some questions about these new plans, the trade-in offers for getting a new iPhone, and about how your employer discount is applied on these new plans. So I chatted with a Verizon rep online to see what they said.

**Taken with a grain, of course, because 3 different reps may give you 3 different answers.

Me: I currently have one of the old Nationwide Talk & Text plans. I'm looking into your new Verizon Plan options. I receive a 22% discount based on my current employer. I was wondering how my discount would apply to the new plan costs. Does the discount come off of the total (plan + line access fee) or is it just off the plan cost itself?

VZW Rep: You will receive 22% off you entire bill.

Me: So if I have the $60 plan (6GB of data) and one iPhone on the plan, my total is $80 per month. It's 22% off of that $80, correct? So $62.40 before taxes and fees? [ I wanted this in writing because that's not how it's always worked ]

VZW Rep: That is correct.

Me: My other question is about trading in my old phone. I understand that it is still possible to purchase a subsidized phone on a 2 year contract for customers who were still on contract plans and not one of the newer plans. I know your promotion now is if I trade in my iPhone 5S I can get $300 towards a new iPhone. Is it $300 only if you get a new iPhone on a payment plan, or is there still a $300 credit if I continue on a subsidized contract plan?

VZW Rep: You will still get the $300 credit, it will be on a gift card that you could use towards your monthly bill or on accessories.

Me: Ok, thanks. Addendum to that question... On the previous Edge program, you received a credit on your line access based on how large your data plan was. Is there still this same sort of credit on the new Verizon Plan when you have a payment plan for your phone?

VZW Rep: No there is not.

Now, I'm 99% sure the part about employer discounts applying to your ENTIRE bill is wrong. I pressed her to confirm it exactly as I typed it a couple times (not shown for brevity's sake here) and she confirmed that it's off the ENTIRE bill. But if I go to the change plans section in my account, it only shows a discount on the plan cost and not the line access cost. I have a feeling I'll be disappointed when I ask about this in the store later today and they'll tell me tough luck.

Theyre marketing/strategy firm is Pentagram, they created the new hideous logo Verizon now touts as original and creative.

I didn't know this. How appropriate their name is Pentagram - a firm that's seemingly ignorant of all the negative/evil connotations of their own name. How could you trust a company to be discriminating on your behalf when they can't even do it for themselves?

I'm sure there are a lot of folks like you in that boat. I'm on an old Nationwide Talk & Text plan where I get 450 minutes and then pay for unlimited messaging and pay for 5GB of data. I never switched to the newer plans because they were always worse deals for me. My bill now comes out to about $85.79 before taxes and after my 22% employer discount. If I use their plan comparison tool on the website, the 6GB plan and payments on a 64GB 6S+ (substantial upgrade from my 16GB 5S) would run me $89.71, so about 4 bucks more for being able to upgrade my phone once a year.

THE MAJOR CATCH.... My first year would have the $300 trade in credit accounted for in the monthly cost. But if I trade it in after a year, my bill would go up by $12.50 (assuming the same level phone and same full price) because you won't get any credit toward the next phone since you don't "own" the one your turning in.

So all in all...2 year cost of ownership on Verizon Plan with a payment plan 64GB 6S+ and the same level new phone in year 2 would be $2303.04, with perks being an additional 1GB of data per month and wifi hotspot.

2 year cost of ownership on my Nationwide Talk & Text plan with a subsidized 64GB 6S+ (same phone both years) would be $2158.96.

Quite frankly this new system of cell phone pricing has me completely confused.

I'm on my parent's family plan. As far as I know the plan is not any cheaper (though I could be wrong) and yet now instead of paying $200 (2 year service contract) you're paying the retail price of the phone. I guess I'm more confused because I did the 2-yr contract and my sister did the monthly installments and we're on the same plan.

I guess the question is, is this new way of paying for the phone actually saving money on an annual basis?

This just becomes very convoluted. I think sticking to the flat out purchase seems like the most straightforward plan. I'm not a big fan of being locked into a seemingly perpetual cycle of debt.

This is true, however, you can take your line "off contract" to receive the same $25 per month discount. This is providing you're eligible for an upgrade. Little known fact that many people don't know. I don't even want to add up how many months I paid $40 for a line access fee while having my phone paid off. Get into a store and get that discount!! Then it no longer matters where you get your hardware, and you don't have to forfeit a More Everything plan (unsure about old unlimited pricing plans).

Yes, that discount is because you're no longer subsidizing a phone with your plan anymore. Since these new plans don't subsidize your phone, I would put money on you not being able to receive the $25 off-contract discount anymore on the new plans.

It's zero percent financing. At the end of the thing you ARE paying retail...

Exactly. Back in August my dad hurried up and got two iPhone 6's before verizon decided to stop offering a two year contacts at that time. That was according to the articles that I saw online. He got a great deal. $50 dollars off each phone and he also got verizon to waive the $40 upgrade fee for each phone. 20% each otter box cases, also. :D Sweet deal.

"Extra dollars" is an understatement.

I'm a family of five, and Verizon currently has a shared 18GB family plan promotion for $100, plus $20 per month per smartphone. That's basically comes out to $200 per month for wireless service alone, not including any data overages. Everyone would share a data allotment of 18GB per month.

T-Mobile has a "10GB for all" family plan, with $100 for the first two lines, and $20 per additional smartphone. For the same family of five, that comes out to $160 per month for wireless service. Each smartphone would get their own allotment of 10GB per month, and any unused data gets rolled over, not to mention each smartphone starts out with 10GB of Data Stash. That's a cumulative 50GB per month, versus a paltry 18GB on Verizon, and it's $40 per month cheaper (and that doesn't include the discounts people are getting on their device leases with JUMP! on Demand).

If the 700MHz Band 12 proves to be nearly as strong as Verizon's building penetration, Verizon has a lot less to defend their overpriced services.
But that IS the question -- how widespread is T-Mobile's Band 12 deployment RIGHT NOW, and when is it expected to be fully deployed? I was doing some spot checking on T-Mobile's coverage map, and I still see a lot of places without the new Extended Range (12) LTE -- of course, these are places where Verizon likely only has 3G (northern Mass, parts of NY state, Cape Cod), and some other areas of the country. The ranger reader/coverage map key indicated in a lot of these places that their 4G might not work inside buildings (which means it's not band 12).

I definitely agree that TM sounds like a much better deal! I'm very tempted, but just worried that suddenly I'll have dropped calls, delayed texts, and I don't know what else. My Verizon coverage in NYC and the places I travel has been flawless. But, they ARE priced high - like AT&T are.

How is that better than the iPhone upgrade plan? The iPhone upgrade plan allows you to pay off your phone over 24 months, or after the first year you can trade in your phone for a new one (just like the Verizon plan). So I don't see how Verizon is saying there's is better, unless they are only referring to T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T?

We got an iPhone 6S (64/gold/cdma) at the Apple store by appointment on Friday. The process to buy it was tedious but not because of payment or account issues. The provisioning process is complex when they walk you through password enabling each cloud feature. So folks who order them at home, expect to be patient through a long start-up process. He also had to reimage the phone because it was not starting properly with backup from cloud. But once it was all set up, everything except one thing transferred from my iPhone 4S running 6.X. What didn't transfer or visibly backup was sent mail. Hmmm.

Same day we went to Verizon to order an iPhone 6S Plus (silver/64/cdma) and expect it 8 October. They have a deal if you order an iPhone you get any iPad for $300 off. This is by far the biggest discount I have ever seen on new Apple equipment, so we got an iPad Mini 4 (silver/64/cdma). So we are firmly ensconced in Verizon and Apple ecosystems, for better or worse. We have 5 phones on the Verizon Wireless More Everything plan and before the upgrades the monthly was about $180. I expect it to go up $20 with these upgrades which is shockingly low, however we did select the option to pay $400 toward the 6S Plus at Verizon which makes the monthly lower.

When it arrives the Plus will have data shifted from a Samsung Galaxy 3 I believe, and also paired with a shiny new Apple Watch (silver, melanese). We bought more stock before this shopping trip. :)

The Verizon plan does not sound better then the T-Mobile JOD program.

When you turn in your phone, does the condition of the phone factor in to whether they accept? (I guess no one really knows how Apple or rise and will handle the trade-ins since the programs have just started.) I assume it has to be in good working condition, but what about minor scratches?

Safari was totally unusable untill I installed an ad blocker. Stalled for 20 min. How is this acceptable for OS 9? I was running OS 6 like butter!!

What the heck are you posting about and what does it have remotely anything to do with this thread about Verizon?

I'm actually pretty happy that they rolled this out

I was planning on selling my 6s plus anyway when the 7 came out (if I like it), but this just makes everything easier. I know I won't be making the additional $50-100 that I would be if I sold it myself, but I guess I'll have to see what's going on next September. I may just end up trading it back into Verizon, making $400, using that to get out of my current payment plan, and then putting the extra money as a down payment or something.

I've got a year to think about this. For now, I'll enjoy my new phone :)

In response to low-cost yearly upgrade programs from T-Mobile and Sprint, Verizon this afternoon announced a new program that will let iPhone customers upgrade to a new iPhone each year provided half of the device cost has been paid and the old device is traded in.

News of Verizon's program was shared by Re/code, and the site says Verizon's program will be available to all Verizon customers who purchase an iPhone 6s or 6s Plus and pay for their phone in installments. This includes customers who have already pre-ordered their devices.

According to Verizon, its new plan is superior to those offered by competitors because there is an option to pay off the phone over 24 months or pay half and trade it in each year.Earlier this week, T-Mobile introduced a JUMP! On Demand promotion that offers the iPhone 6s for as little as $5 per month with a qualifying smartphone trade in. Under the JUMP! On Demand program, customers can upgrade to a new phone as many as three times a year with device trade-ins.

Following the announcement of T-Mobile's promotional pricing, Sprint this morning announced limited time lower prices for its iPhone Forever program, letting customers get an iPhone 6s for as little as $1 per month with the trade-in of an iPhone 6.

With both programs, pricing varies based on iPhone 6s and 6s Plus capacity and the smartphone being traded in.

I can't believe there's no information out regarding the roll out of the upgrade program? if i but a 6S on Apple finance can i enrol onto it where its released? it seems no-one has the answers and nothing regarding the timescales coming from Apple...frustrated UK user (iphone4)

If you don't mind having Verizon screw you over on your bill every month and spending hours on the phone getting them to correct it, then sure this is a great deal.

There's a couple of crowd-sourced maps online, and my brother and I follow tmonews.com - one of their latest posts was a few weeks ago that interested us, we're from Murray Hill and live in Portland, traveling between here and The City to visit family. The post that interested us and maybe you is this one: http://www.tmonews.com/2015/09/t-mobile-4/

The two maps are here: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=zYsWXH8QR36Q.k_csKbu63eVk
and here, with more information and updates: http://www.spectrumgateway.com/t-mobile-700a-spectrum

My brother flew in just today from Sitka and just about jumped out of his pants when his T-Mo iPhone rang - it never worked in my home before and he's always gone out on the porch to make a call. One of the new units is about 3 miles from here as the crow flies.

Hi CampyGuy!

Thank you for the response! I had seen someone else post the spectrum gateway link the other day, and I did look at it. Interesting - and promising. Though as far as I can tell, while NYC (all boroughs and Long Island) do have allocated Band 12 space, according to the map (which lists "12" where Band 12 is already active) it's not yet officially active in NYC. I have read that some people have found it a few places, but that it is spotty. So, while it is exciting, it's not quite here yet. The drop off inside buildings is what worries me. I have Verizon - wonderful service (but overpriced!). So, I'd love to switch to Tmobile, but not at a loss of connectivity. :)

Do yourself a favor, and bookmark those links and check back once in a while. For my brother and I, we noticed that those Portland-area towers weren't even on the map a few weeks ago, and that solid signal has come and gone today - I suspect that those towers are in testing mode. We had no Band 12 coverage to speak of just a couple of weeks ago here but now we do, at least in downtown Portland - so, give it a few weeks and maybe you'll be good to go!

He took off for a few days to hang out with our Mom and I KNOW there's no T-Mo coverage there. We carry iPhones from multiple networks - VZW for me, ATTWS for him and we share when necessary, and there's coverage holes here in OR/WA/AK that NJ would fit comfortably in! FWIW, I'm sticking with my VZW lines as well for now, too - still with UL data!
