Contracts are rewritten all the time. That's essentially what a mortgage refi is.

There is a distinct possibility that the contract between AT&T and Apple has been revised since the original iPhone, including an expiration date that's not years off. We know that the original subscription revenue sharing arrangement was dropped in favor of an outright subsidy when Apple unveiled the iPhone 3G. Changing the exclusivity expiration date could have happened any time in the past three years.

Note that AT&T's exclusivity could have been tied to an SLA (service level agreement) as well. SLAs are quite common in enterprise contracts.

an SLA for cell phone service? are you on drugs?

even if there was such a clause there are enough bugs in the iphone OS that it will never stand up in court that AT&T broke it's part of the agreement. and the fact that so many counties make it hard for you to put up a cell phone antenna

i was out in LI outside NYC yesterday and had no signal at north shore hospital. watching the local news they said that residents are looking to get a local ordinance passed so that no new cell phone antennas can be put up

That's my guess as well. People just assume that since Apple is making CDMA phones it has to mean Verizon. But China uses CDMA, and that market can absorb All of the CDMA iPhone production.

Only 13% of world wide market uses CDMA.

Verizon is not getting the iphone

fyi...based on Verizon's behavior lately...Verizon is now married to Google not Apple... Verizon is closely working with Google to influence the FCC. Google and Verizon have been making numerous marketing publications.

I feel for the folks who love the iphone and on the Verizon network, we are out of luck.

I expect the CDMA iphone will be used for other cellular providers and those people who jail break it and put it on the verizon network...but I do not believe there is a Verizon deal with Apple in the works...sorry to write...

I don't use Skype. I have no need for it. I'm on an unlimited plan and don't call outside the USA.

Don't get into a War of OS's. It's not one you're going to win with the force behind Google and Android. And it's not one I'm going to waste my time with.

I love my Droid X. I returned my iPhone 4 and am glad I made the decision.

I have the Internet in my Pocket, you have a toy that does well at playing games and lousy at making calls.

It's a phone first as Consumer Reports and cNEt has said.
The iPhone 4 fails at being a stable phone.

You have no frakin idea what you are talking about.

There is nothing, and I mean nothing, that is even remotely in the same league as Mobile Safari. It was the first, and still is, the best web experience on a mobile device. And I am not even going to talk about third party Apps or Apple's built in ones. If anything, Android apps are utter garbage that have been cobbled together by system engineers who have zero idea what UI and UX design is.

Calling a mobile phone that provides one of the best user experiences ever created (and has single handedly turned the whole smartphone industry upside down) a toy is one hell of an ignorant statement.

ps: I have never had a single dropped call on my iPhone 4 (or any other iPhone for that matter). But then again, I don't live in the country of AT&T.

Sure, just as soon as there's an equivalent development environment for HTML5 and as many programmers.

In the meantime, Flash on a smartphone is handy to have. Suddenly you realize how many times you had to leave a website because you got a blue box instead of content.

Definitely true but somebodies gotta step up and say "enough is enough" and force designers and programmers to move on. You gotta hand it to Apple, they're great at smashing the status quo. Arguably one of the best companies at driving innovation.

The best feature about the Droid X is you can talk on the phone while using the internet....
Oh wait you can't.

Droid = Windows
iPhone = Mac

The same arguments that have circled the globe the past couple decades about Mac vs. PC will return with Droid vs. iPhone. Everyone knows, Apple > everyone else. Have fun with your Droid. Holding a VCR up to your face and talking would look smaller than the Droid X.

I have information and even strong (though anecdotal) evidence to the contrary. I myself am not bound by an NDA but my source is. Therefore I can't share the details now so this post is worthless

Still, it will be fun to point back to when the Verizon iPhone launches.

The way Verizon is gimping these Android phones; there is no way Apple would allow any of that.
I'll agree with that whole-heartedly.
What do you mean "The way Verizon is gimping these Android Phones"?

I just got the Droid X and it is not gimped in any way. There is extra apps on the phone that duplicated features in Android that I was able to delete.

Can you do this with iPhone and their stock apps? NO. I know for a fact because I've owned them.

I take put on or take off anything that I want on the Droid X.

I love the phone and don't regret for a second switching to Verizon or putting my iToy to rest.

I have Flash on the Phone that I can turn on and off as I see fit. I can put an app on to hide ads.

If anyone is gimping phones it's Apple. I control what I have on my phone.
Steve Jobs tells you what you need on your phone and no you can't remove it if it's stock Apple app.

Do a little research before you spew ignorance.

Not gimped, you say. How about a couple examples that weren't mentioned in the first 25 comments?

Pricing: Verizon is 2-fer-ing every single Android phone it gets its hands on. So are T-moble and Sprint. Every commercial that features one of the Android phones says something like, "Buy this phone and get any other phone on our network absolutely free!" They're subsidizing these things so deeply that I can only imagine what the service contract looks like. What? Pay the ETF up front? At least one comment I've read elsewhere accuses Verizon of exactly that.

Software: We've all, I'm sure, read the article about the Android fragmentation and how four different versions of Android are currently in use with only spotty capabilities to update the OS on board. And this doesn't even take into account the different apps that the service provider feels must be on those devices, whether you want them or not, with little to no means of removing them.
I'm sure you've also read how Google is attempting to regain control of Android by separating certain apps from the core OS and the discussions about how they need to wall in Android similar to Apple's iOS simply to keep Android viable as a single OS and moving forward.

Yes, Android devices and Android itself are becoming severely gimped. Quite honestly, while the iPhone might see a huge upsurge in sales by offering a Verizon connection, if Verizon is given any control of the device itself, the iPhone's reputation will be damaged even if it is better and sells more than any other single model. I can see why Apple and Verizon didn't get along with the first-gen iPhone discussions--I can imagine they're not doing any better now.

Ivan Seidenberg will soon retire and be replaced by Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell C. McAdam, likely early next year. McAdam's is bullish on wireless and has lead Verizon to become the nation's largest wireless carrier. Ivan is seen by many as one of the roadblocks to an Apple deal, things may change dramatically under McAdam's leadership.

I'll agree with that whole-heartedly.

i've read that VZW makes a lot of money on selling the accessories and nothing on the phone itself. one of the reasons why something you bought 2 months ago won't work with a new phone from VZW.

same with the apps. some companies probably pay VZW to pre-load their apps

I like it

AT&T needs competition when it comes to the iPhone. Instead of winning new customers just because of the iPhone, maybe they will now have to have a better network!

You can? Then how come no one can remove The Blockbuster app and other apps as well? Unless you have a special Droid X that no one else have then i would suggest you retract your statement.

Many people believe the AT+T exclusivity has ended this year. Why do you say it's ending in 2012 ?

Because this news came out in court litigation. And the last I knew, the court case was still on. Anyway I read an article a while ago that showed evidence of this contract. I have not read anything with evidence that the contract has changed. I've read articles speculating that it has.

But as I said in another response, I am a Verizon customer who is contemplating an iphone purchase. So I would be very happy to be proven wrong. I just don't accept it as a possibility. Twice I believed these proposed dates for Verizon iphone, got all excited and then was let down. So I just remind myself it won't be until 2012 at the earliest and maybe not then.

The iPhone is not coming to Verizon anytime soon. Maybe...and that's a strong maybe when LTE is more widespread in a few years.

Does everyone forget the 2 "supposed" reasons that seem pretty credible as to why Verizon didn't get the phone before?

  1. There was an issue with subsidy cost. Apple won't bend considering the iPhone success and Verizon will have a tough time selling an iPhone on their network for more than AT&T. No go.
  2. And we can't forget the OS control that Verizon insists on having with devices on their network. Apple will not go for that either. No go.

I agree with someone from another thread. This supposed CDMA phone would be for China and not Verizon.

Keep hoping.

If verizon would get up off there knees and stop begging maybe Apple will become interested. Verizon seems like that annoying fly on the wall right now.

+1 to your statement.

My friends android apps look like **** in comparison to my apps.
Talk to any iPhone user and damn near all of them will say it's the best user experience in a phone. Because it is.

Sick of all the Verizon-iPhone speculation

There was NEVER anything more credible than the official court documents stating that Apple has a 5 year exclusivity agreement with AT&T for the iPhone since 2007, and this data was reported originally by USA Today when the iPhone was first launched.

The imagination of all these speculators is completely insane.

Get over it!

You're NOT getting an iPhone on the Verizon network anytime soon!
