I heard that you can't multitask with voice and surf the web at the same time on the Verizon network. That will hurt them when that information is common knowledge.

Is that something that can change at launch or is that permanent?

It is an issue with the tower and the channels assigned to voice and data. However living in San Francisco and having an iPhone I would be happy just being able to make and receive calls.

We will buy a phone directly from Apple, Motorola, Samsung, etc., then you will pick your carrier.
Or Best Buy or Radio Shack or the local cell phone retailer...but yeah, you'll be able to buy the phone separate and then shop for a carrier. You can do that all now, but it's harder to do and cost a lot more. Eventually we hope it will be more widespread and easier. Carriers will continue to offer subsidized phone though. That will probably never go away.

Wrong. He showed it doing calls on EDGE and data on WiFi. The first phone was EDGE only and could NOT do both voice and data at the same time over the cellular network.

I did not say Jobs said he is doing other things over the network. My point is Verizon CDMA network can not do the same as the GSM network. This difference will be broadcasted by iPhone users in no time if there is a verizon iphone. Have you forgotten how the antenna gate was hyped to out of proportion?

Dear Apple,

Please make a deal with Verizon. I am due to get a new phone in February and I reaaally want an iphone. With Verizon.

That would be great.

Thanks!

Sincerely,

Me

I don't use Skype. I have no need for it. I'm on an unlimited plan and don't call outside the USA.

Don't get into a War of OS's. It's not one you're going to win with the force behind Google and Android. And it's not one I'm going to waste my time with.

I love my Droid X. I returned my iPhone 4 and am glad I made the decision.

I have the Internet in my Pocket, you have a toy that does well at playing games and lousy at making calls.

It's a phone first as Consumer Reports and cNEt has said.
The iPhone 4 fails at being a stable phone.

What's wrong with the internet browsing on iPhone? I have the internet in my pocket as well AND I can make calls; calls and browsing at the same time no less. Talk about limits....that seems like an important limitation to me. Verizon smartphones seem more like autisticphones to me. They have their moments of brilliance, but overall they are just retarded.

Now go plug your battery hog in before it dies.

The iPhone is not coming to Verizon anytime soon. Maybe...and that's a strong maybe when LTE is more widespread in a few years.

Does everyone forget the 2 "supposed" reasons that seem pretty credible as to why Verizon didn't get the phone before?

  1. There was an issue with subsidy cost. Apple won't bend considering the iPhone success and Verizon will have a tough time selling an iPhone on their network for more than AT&T. No go.
  2. And we can't forget the OS control that Verizon insists on having with devices on their network. Apple will not go for that either. No go.

I agree with someone from another thread. This supposed CDMA phone would be for China and not Verizon.

Keep hoping.
You forgot the biggest reason: Verizon just plain didn't expect anything to come of a phone from a completely new player to the industry. Esp such a divergence from the tech of the time.

But those 3 reasons are over. Verizon has had to reduce control on Android phones, from what I understand. At least, compared to what control they exert over basic phones. And the first one is ancient history, anything on that topic would be a new issue. The exclusivity agreement between Apple and ATT is the main issue at this point. Anything else would be based on current negotiations, which we don't even know if any exist.
You can rewrite contracts. That's what a mortage refi is. If I showed you a thirty-year mortgage that I signed in 1997, is it still valid? Maybe, maybe not. You don't know if I refinanced the loan (perhaps multiple times) or if I paid it off.
You need to stop saying rewrite for mortgage refis. They are generally new mortgages, starting with a new principle amount to pay off the old one. And charging fees just like a first mortgage on a new purchase. It's a poor example in your argument about the Apple/ATT deal.
You can? Then how come no one can remove The Blockbuster app and other apps as well? Unless you have a special Droid X that no one else have then i would suggest you retract your statement.
Probably rooted. Can do the same to iPhone, remove Apple's built-in apps.

Verizon is just saying they are open to having the iPhone if Apple chooses.

Does make you wonder if they are playing the "we dont know anything" card with all of these rumors.

As always, we will see.

Lmao! You know why they keep saying this every time? To trick people to think the iPhone is coming and stay on veriion

That's exactly it. The Wall Street journal keeps reporting it, too. I think they had 3 different stories on it in the past 2 years. All of them wrong.

Verizon up to old tricks again

Yeah, that's right Verizon, keep your customers thinking that you are going to get the iPhone any day now. That should deter your most loyal customers from leaving. I guess it's worked so far.

There are people on these threads that have waited 3 years already. I feel bad for them.

The reality is Verizon will not have a large enough 4G LTE Footprint until 2013-2014 (a footprint large enough not to rely on CDMA as a backup). No wonder they want to install their LTE ASAP.

Question for the Verizon Fans: If you are not a Verizon Employee, why would you want a Verizon iPhone? You will lose rollover minutes, concurrent voice/data access, global coverage, speed.

Because here in the Bay Area, Verizon service is so much better than AT&Ts. I have an iphone and I also have a "dumb"/simple verizon phone to make calls that don't get dropped. This is my experience but independent testing (see consumer reports) also verifies that in many markets Verizon has a much better signal. It depends where you live...is some places AT&T has a better signal.

This is a very simple decision/issue.

You (and your neighbors) need to put some pressure on your local politicians. As Steve Jobs recently said, it takes about 3 years to install a new cell phone tower in San Fran due to the bureaucracy and NIMBY syndrome. Verizon better start the process now...or they will see the same congestion issues once they start supporting more smart phones.

roll over minutes are useless unless you're a chick that is always on the phone on the weekends. unless you're on the phone 24x7 it's impossible to use all the rollover minutes

Why are yo visiting this site? Shouldn't you be wasting your time in droid watering holes?

Okay, technically the old contract is voided and a new one supercedes it. It's not like they're crossing out lines. It's the same concept though.

For a mortgage refi, everything is moved into an escrow account and the balance due of the old account is paid off by the new mortgage.

What do you mean "The way Verizon is gimping these Android Phones"?

I just got the Droid X and it is not gimped in any way. There is extra apps on the phone that duplicated features in Android that I was able to delete.

Can you do this with iPhone and their stock apps? NO. I know for a fact because I've owned them.

I take put on or take off anything that I want on the Droid X.

I love the phone and don't regret for a second switching to Verizon or putting my iToy to rest.

I have Flash on the Phone that I can turn on and off as I see fit. I can put an app on to hide ads.

If anyone is gimping phones it's Apple. I control what I have on my phone.
Steve Jobs tells you what you need on your phone and no you can't remove it if it's stock Apple app.

Do a little research before you spew ignorance.

Research eh?

To me, this is just further proof that the iPhone is coming relatively soon.

Verizon is surely going to be paying a lot of money to subsidize iPhones. Carrier iPhone margins have to be lower than on other devices because of the appeal of carrying the iPhone and what they are willing to pay Apple. Clearly the Verizon CEO is trying to get people to keep upgrading their phones and keep migrating to Android. He doesn't care if the January or February iPhone launch will sell a million less, they'll make more per unit selling people androids now, besides that its always in their benefit to lock people down in contracts as soon as possible.

Apple is likewise probably fine with this as it keeps sales of their current AT&T model up.

I bet if you get a dumbphone on AT&T you will be able to make calls too...I have family in the Bay on dumbphones and their coverage is fine...side bar: when I vist Oakland and Frisco which I do quite often I've never had any signal issues with any of the iPhones since '07

All I know is I'm on Verizon. I've got a Droid. I live where AT&T coverage is horrible (North Coast of CA). If I'm at a wifi hotspot I use my iPod Touch. I wish I had an iPhone. The Droid is a glorified boat anchor.

Now that's just silly. Any Droid phone would make a horrible boat anchor.

I'm glad you agree that since no other contract was announced, the original 5 year exclusivity agreement remains.

Do you think they will ever announce a Verizon iPhone after the 5 year exclusivity agreement ends in 2012? Or do you think Apple will stick with AT&T?

There was never any definitive date given for the length of the exclusivity (i.e. Apple and AT+T never reveled the end date). The original 5 year date is just a date some analyst came up with and it is based on their best guesses.
