This is my fourth go around (3, 3G,3GS,4) with the iPhone on AT&T's network and I am far from completely satisfied, but I'm not about to pay a hefty AT&T ETF and the cost of a new iPhone just for perceived better voice service. I think I'll do a wait and see on how the service shakes out, and when my contract up, I'll pull the trigger if at all. This seems to be the consensus of my colleagues as well.

I know my iPad in a 3G area is faster than Verizon, but it is so unusable outside of a 3G area (in Edge) it is a joke.

If you are currently with ATT and "in contract" and your service is acceptable I don't see why you would want to jump ship into a new 2 year contract with the same iphone 4 on Verizon. I would think you would want to at least wait till June when the iPhone 5 comes out. I would think that the iPhone 5 would come to the rest of the world and Verizon at the same time.

Since their is a 99.99% chance that there will be no $99 or $49 iphone 3gs being offered on Verizon like currently on ATT the phone offered tomorrow will most likely be offered at $199 and $299. Then in June when the iPhone 5 comes out the $199 iPhone 4 16gb will be reduced to $49 or $99. I would bet the farm on this happening so it is a 100% guarantee that in 5 months the iPhone 5 will come out to all carriers at the same time. Again I don't see why anyone would jump ship right now.

Can any of the Verizon Users post your top CDMA speeds please.....so that we can compare?

I was on Sprint, prior to AT&T, but I usually capped out @ 1.5 Mbits. 1 Mbit was closer to reality. However, that being said, my latency was typically in the 70 ms range.

Unless you are downloading lots of apps via 3g or other larger files, the latency being lower will have the feeling of being "faster." when in actuality it isn't.

Here's why: CDMA is a bottleneck....each user can only enter their Network at about 1 mb max. That'll save their core. I've reached speeds of 5mb on my iPhone w/AT&T. So have others...read their posts.

I agree that CDMA is slower than AT&T 3G in most places. However, in bigger cities, AT&T bottlenecks and the 3G speed can be very slow. Verizon's 3G is much more consistent.

It's great to get 4mb sometimes, but too often (for me) I was getting 2.5mb on occasion with under 700k more consistently, or non-existent data.

Here's the issue as well. Verizon gets the iPhone 4 now, but in the summer, AT&T gets iPhone 5 and Verizon waits a few months to get 5.

OR, Verizon gets iPhone 5 in summer same time AT&T, but would Verizon users want the iPhone 4, not be eligible for TWO years (since Verizon changed policy) or should you WAIT and get iPhone 5?

I can only mourn for friends and family who have bought Android phones on Verizon in the past year after they finally gave up hope for a Verizon iPhone. :(

If Verizon does get the iPhone and it cannibalizes some users away from AT&T, I really hope AT&T doesn't downgrade its network in order to save money. Service is awful in some places already, no need to make it worse.

While Verizon may have some disadvantages, like slower speeds, no combined voice & data, etc., I've heard from many people that they'd take Verizon, since AT&T keeps dropping calls. In this case, bad service is better than no service.

As for me, personally, I don't really care. I have an iPhone 4 w/ AT&T and it works for me. But Verizon may relieve some of the stress and bring competition to AT&T. Hopefully that'll make AT&T up its game.

Are there any Android Users on Verizon reading this thread? Would be great if you could post speedtest numbers.

on my iPhone I am getting right now:
227ms ping
1.31 Mbps Download
1.12 Mbps Upload

On my Droid
200ms ping
1.62 mbps download
0.77 mbps upload

I think many people are happy with the Incredible, or Droid 2 or Droid X.

ATT + iPhone in NYC metro area...Life in the NO lane!!!

As in NO SERVICE in so many areas where a good signal should be no problem whatsoever. I have rollover minutes to last a lifetime....just wish I could talk on the Phone here in Manhattan without signal issues or dropped calls. My monthly voice usage is usually only 40 minutes or so. Reason is, I can't use the phone! The reliability of email delivery service over ATT is also a joke.

I'll take life in the SLOW lane vs. life in the ATT NO lane!!!!

Can't wait to ditch ATT here in NYC.

Yes, HSPA is faster. But CDMA DOES support simultaneous voice/data. Please stop putting out false info.

There is a CDMA Standard for concurrent voice/data....to date, Verizon has not enabled it. Maybe they will tomorrow?

There are, however, there are quite a few people who will be dumping Android first chance they get with the enticement of the iPhone.

I'd be surprised this number is higher than most believe it to be, based on anecdotal evidence, but evidence nonetheless.

I think you're probably right. I love my android devices, but a lot of people don't and just want the iPhone. At least now they have a choice on Verizon.

There is nothing for them to enable. It's all on the device. The device makers need to use a modem chip that allows it. To date, none has.

So perhaps the VZW iPhone will be the first. I think that would be enough of a feather in Steve's hat to crow about. The first CDMA device to do simultaneous voice/data...

Verizon Droid running Speedtest.net in burbs of Chicago area (4 bars):

65ms Ping
1875kbps down
874kbps up

AT&T iPhone 4 running Speedtest.net, same location (4 bars):

457ms Ping
2256kbps down
1086kbps up

Running repeated tests on the V-Droid gets me +/- 500 kbps down, +/- 300 kbps up.

Running repeated tests on the AT&T iPhone gets me +/- 1500 kbps down, +/- 500 kbps up.

If latency isn't an issue, AT&T for me in this particular location is generally faster than EVDO, but not impressively so. The AT&T throughput fluctuates far more than the Verizon speeds. YMMV.

True, but would that be any different for people on AT&T that get an iPhone 4 now? Historically, Apple has still sold plenty of phones from January to June...
