Verizon's network is solid. I read somewhere that the android phones on Verizon use much more data than iPhone users on AT&T, so I don't think there will be an issue.

I agree. VZW has sold good numbers of Android devices. And their network haven't been dented at all. I'm anxious for the VZW Iphone announcement so I can get rid of 2 blackberries of mine/wife!

So if you buy a Verizon iPhone you won't be able to unlock it and use it in Europe, Africa, Middle East, Australia, most of Asia, most of South America etc. What a worthless POS. I don't understand why people like CDMA so much, it's worthless if you can't use it outside of the US.

well i'd like to see the number of people who actually travel outside the US.

Good for ya'

Here's why: CDMA is a bottleneck....each user can only enter their Network at about 1 mb max. That'll save their core. I've reached speeds of 5mb on my iPhone w/AT&T. So have others...read their posts.

Good for you... I can't even reach over 400Kbps... Verizon here I come...

Perhaps because there are a large percentage of customers who don't care...

There are tons that don't even leave their state, let alone country. And for those that do, it's often cheaper to just rent a cell phone if required.

I was on Sprint, a CDMA carrier, and my phone worked fine anywhere in the US and also in Ontario, Canada.

Not all of us leave North America regularly. Also, AT&T charges so much for any sort of international roaming that you might as well buy a prepaid phone when you get there anyway.

$49 3g

They can only charge $49 for an iPhone 3G. It runs horribly with iOS 3 and 4. My friends have 3G's and their phones run like crap.

OK.... so for all of those out there in Verizon land... and "OUR" 2 yr upgrade/renewal is around the corner, MINE IS MAR. 16th. OK... so Verizon kicks out the iphone the end of January. That means I HAVE TO WAIT TILL MID MARCH to get my upgrade to the iphone. WHEREAS: all the newbie Verizon customers get to get it before me when I've been a faithful customer for yrs now. And they get it as soon as it's released. Just doesn't seem fair to me. When I have been with Verizon first. But if I don't want to wait till March I will have to pay for the early upgrade.... Just a thought! UGGGH!

I'm sure Verizon will be happy to immediately "upgrade" you to a 26 month contract and lock you in for 26 more months. They care about subscription dollars and lock in. If you're willing to lock in with them for long-terms, they'll likely be quite willing to "let" you lock yourself into their terms, pricing, etc. ASAP.

I wouldn't be surprised in people who just re-upped and have 23 months to go on a contract when this iPhone comes available, aren't invited to "upgrade" with a new 24+23 month contract.

Everybody wins(loses) with the U.S. cell phone contract game. It's too bad so many foolish customers choose to allow it to go on (by being so quick and easy to lock themselves into such contracts). If the crowd would refuse to play that game, the game would change.

so am i the only one content with at&t?

Nope, I would be on AT&T right now with the iPhone 4 if I wasn't already on a family plan with Verizon and if they didn't cap data. I have AT&T for my iPad (obviously) and I'm very happy with my use of 3G data on it.

The question is, can verizon handle 40x the network traffic? Do they already have 98% of their network idle (waste of money), or do they think they can build that up quickly (people: not in my backyard).

First, they don't have to build up towers, unlike ATT. They already have a well-sited CDMA layout. So no NIMBY worries.

Second, they've been adding backhaul for the past couple of years, boosting towers from the usual ~1-10 Mbps, to at least 50Mbps, with up to 300Mbps or more in denser areas. They even sell extra backhaul to other carriers.

Verizon has always been about their network and its reliability, not raw sales.

Outside of streaming video, I don't think Internet speed differences are as important as the vast difference in coverage area and reliability of verizon over AT&T. I had AT&T for seven years, and dropped them last fall due to deterioration in service in our small town. Switched to verizon, but hated my droid incredible, so I've been using an old dumb phone awaiting the iPhone. Can't wait! Actually being able make calls and use internet apps will be fantastic.

Coverage varies wildly between locations, but bottom line is Verizon has a much larger 3G network overall. This is a good thing.

Just for curiosity, how about CMDA speed in real life usage?
I'm in italy and just few zones/cities we have a good UMTS/HDSPA speed, usually we got crappy speed, i'm sure CMDA speed is faster than our real life, "made in italy" UMTS :p

@ w0by
It is 3GS which runs great with iOS4.x

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

I have an AT&T iPhone and won't be switching unless verizon has an LTE iPhone ( highly doubt it). It's really true that AT&T has gotten mush better in the past year. I haven't dropped a call in months, and my data speeds are probably twice what they used to be. It still slows down during busy times, but even then I can't remember the last time I was below 1.5 or 1 (at worst) mbps. And at lower-use times I often get 3.5 to 5+. I'm hard pressed to see how verizon would do better - but I do live in a downtown area.

I for one am glad I moved from the iPhone 3G to the iPhone 4 when my 2 year contract was up last summer. I am *very* glad to skip the iPhone 5 this summer and I can make an **INFORMED** choice in summer 2012 when it comes time to update my phone and perhaps my carrier.

I have heard a lot of good things about Verizon, but AT&T works well where I live. I occasionally have issues when I travel (which is heavily as an airline pilot) and also at large events with lots of people using iPhones on AT&T... but do I know that won't be the case for Verizon too? No. What about CDMA, just how much slower will it be? Will Verizon's "larger" network matter when in 2012 what will matter is the build out of AT&T's vs. Verizon's LTE "4G" network which today are only in their infancy?

Lots and lots of questions to be answered and I am not going to be the first to jump in the pool and find out there was no water. For those already on Verizon then I am sure this will be like a cool drink of water, but for those of us with iPhones already a bit of caution might be wise.

A lot of people like me will hardly ever leave the country if ever leave the country. So this is not an issue for a lot of people.

Here in Oklahoma Verizon has a data connection that is significantly slower than AT&T. But the coverage is better in the metropolitan areas, the outlying areas are not even covered yet by Verizon. AT&T has the best overall coverage in the state.

I'll just be happy when the Verizon iPhone is out and we can quit talking about it.

So the iPhone is on AT&T and Verizon, both very expensive. But it really needs to be on Sprint. More minutes, nights/weekends @7pm, free calling to ANY MOBILE, TRUE unlimited 4G and 'unlimited' 5GB 3G.
Nationally, it seems like there's a pretty consistent tradeoff. The bigger and more reliable network, the more vicious the consumer abuse and disregard. Verizon gets you the best product but they're one of the most horrible companies out there to do business with. AT&T falls just below them on the scale (network a little less reliable, company a little less predatory). Sprint is a nicer company and has some better features, but they are not as reliable as AT&T and Verizon.

This is also the reason why smaller cellular companies often-times offer better features—they must to attract customers while a company like Verizon knows their customers will take it up the *** and thank them for it afterward. The best is when you get one of the 'smaller' companies in an area where they're one of the best (e.g. T-Mobile in San Francisco).

It's not just Oklahoma. I've seen it all over the place.
Same goes for the network reliability. Verizon is almost always better.

Nope. I live in Boston. AT&T is awesome here. As far as the simultaneous voice + data, people say you don't need it but don't realize how convenient it is to have once you do.

I used to be on Verizon but got tired of waiting for it. Glad people on the Big Red can get the iPhone now too. It is a neat little device.

+1 Agreed.

I won't be switching. I like AT&T... call me silly! :) Glad to see Verizon getting the iPhone. It will be interesting to see how iPhone sales do against Droid phones with more choices out there in the US.

No reason for frustration...yet. Who knows whether or not Verizon may offer early upgrade options for existing Android users who want the iPhone? Sure, they don't have to.....but they may decide to do so if it ensures that you are locked in for another 2 years.

1/11/11 at 11 AM

I could see them announcing tomorrow that the iPhone is coming to Verizon. However, it would be released in June 2011 during the yearly iPhone refresh, so people are aware it's coming and not locked into a contract before it's release and cannot do the early upgrade. I also find it difficult to believe that Apple redesigned the iPhone to work with AT&T and/or Verizon when the demand is so high and no one has received one of these new "redesigned" iPhones on AT&T's network. But anyway....

Seriously though, how funny would it be that this all a rumor and they are only talking about their new LTE network and expanding it to additional markets and no iPhone on Verizon?

I don't know. I've been using AT&T since 07 when the first iPhone came out and I've had zero issues with service, cs, my bills, etc..

I don't see Verizon taking much business should this news be true. If my service wasn't reliable I'd have switched a long time ago as I'd expect anybody else who had valid issues.

microcell

I called AT&T a few months back and told them if they wish to keep me and the two iphones on my account as a customer they will need to give me a microcell since I do not get coverage at home. They told me I could purchase one for $150. I said that I pay $200 a month for coverage I don't get in my own home centrally located in a major city. They said a microcell costs $150. I told them I'd rather spend that $150 towards terminating my contact when the iPhone switches companies. And that was that.

I don't care if Verizon is slightly slower. What's the point of paying outrageous fees for a service for a faster service that is intermittent at best?

That's like buying a sports car but it breaks down every few miles and can never pull into your garage. I'd buy a ford focus if it's more reliable.

Don't get me wrong, I would like Verizon to get the iPhone and KILL all these Verizon rumors
But for some odd strange reason, I would like Wall Street Journal to be proven wrong. Since they have been making a ********* of rumors for the past 4 years
