in my area, at&t has very low reception, though verizon is full reception. so i'd consider changing. however, are you able to use data and call at the same time on verizon. i've heard you can't - i.e. talking on phone while loading the maps or checking email. if verizon can't handle that, i'll be sticking with at&t.

You can, but only if Apple includes a SV-DO chip in it. http://www.cdg.org/news/press/2009/Aug17_09.asp

I don't understand anyone who has had problems making a call on an iPhone. I had an iPhone EDGE until October, and an iPhone 4 since and have NEVER had any problems making or receiving calls, at least not when I had signal. I did have issues in my home, mainly due to local regulation preventing a cell tower from being built locally. After finally calling at&t about my issue, they upgraded a tower on an adjacent island to give me, and my entire town full coverage. Apparently they had never gotten complaints, but once they received a complaint, they fixed the issue.

Also, the 'slow lane' jab is quite accurate. I work in a office where everyone uses a different carrier, and many use different OSes on their phones. Every once in a while we'll simultaneously do speed tests to see who wins, and it is usually my iPhone and the T-Mobile My Touch neck and neck, usually with the iPhone ahead by about 20 kbps, with the Sprint 4G phone (EVO) right behind, and the Verizon phones dead last, at barely dial-up speeds.

Just goes to show you that there is SOME truth in advertising.

It would be interesting if they used the MDM9600 - LTE / CDMA chip just announced.

Qualcomm mentioned Verizon would be mentioning new devices soon that would be using the chip.....

The new LTE Androids sets they showed at CES have the MDM9600.

I'm more interested if Apple put the MSM7630 in there. That will give the iPhone SVDO capability

No it won't be that specific chip. That chip is an arm CPU in the snapdragon family. Apple is using their own cpu based on arm. The options are qualcomm licensing apple to add it to their chip, apple adding it on their own or using a discreet part. It will be a discreet part in my opinion if it is there. I can't see apple messing with the 'A' chip just for cmda. But one thing I do know for sure, we should find out tomorrow.

Yea, I'm curious to see how they choose to address it.

So if you buy a Verizon iPhone you won't be able to unlock it and use it in Europe, Africa, Middle East, Australia, most of Asia, most of South America etc. What a worthless POS. I don't understand why people like CDMA so much, it's worthless if you can't use it outside of the US.

Right....because for the 98% of us who don't travel outside of the US, it's worthless to actually be able to use our phone to make calls in the US.

This constant arguing over CDMA vs GSM is like arguing over plasma and LCD displays. In reality they're both pretty much just as good as the other, and which one you buy simply boils down to personal preference until some technology comes along and unites the best of both worlds (i.e. OLED).

Besides, who cares if GSM has an edge in speed against CDMA? At least with Verizon you get 3G coverage in a crap ton more area of the USA as compared with whatever AT&T can supply now. There isn't a discernable enough amount of speed difference to make me or anyone else who doesn't see a couple of extra second to load a webpage as a bother to care. Both companies are switching over to LTE which is a variant of GSM anyways.

AT&T continues to miss the point, and simply try to "Spin" things

i'll gladly take "Life in the Slow Lane" over "Life in the Spotty-Reception-Despite-Ridiculous-Monthly-Fees Lane"

Couldn't agree more. However, comparatively speaking for me, I don't exactly think it will be life in the slow lane for me if I switch. I live in downtown Chicago, not some rural area with no coverage. If you check AT&T's map, Chicago is fully covered by 3G. On weekends or at 1am, I can get decent 3G speeds on my iPhone. Too bad I'm usually at home during that time, and therefore don't need the 3G since I have wifi. During the work week however, my 3G speed slows to a literal crawl. AT&T's network simply cannot handle the bandwith of users here in Chicago, and they've made no effort to invest in the infrastructure here for the past few years. I get bumped down to Edge 90% of the time (Mon-Fri during normal usage hours). If that weren't bad enough, despite paying for 3G, my Edge speeds are embarrassing. Just tested the speed several times today, and I'm getting a 28k download speed. Yes, I typed that correctly. It's like going back to half the speed of a 56k modem! It's simply unusable, and AT&T should be embarrassed. I could even live with the constant dropped calls, but the fact I can only get around 28k download during the times I need the phone most has become a deal breaker.

AT&T got fat and happy with having the iPhone exclusively, and didn't bother to invest in their infrastructure or their customers here to keep up with demand. Now, they're trying to criticize Verizon's network because GSM is theoretically superior. What AT&T is failing to recognize, is that theoretical numbers mean nothing if their network is overloaded and cannot handle real life demand. It angers me to hear them put their spin on it, and call Verizon the 'slow lane' when I'm experiencing 28k download speeds here in downtown Chicago.

What if it all turns out to be an announcement for their LTE Towers and a brand new "Droid SUPER X"
Don't get me wrong but i would like the Verizon rumors to die just as anyone else but Verizon could just be teasing just for the extra traffic to their site.

But who knows, only 20 hours left

Any ideas on how much more expensive LTE phones will be per month compared to the current data prices?

The ATT website for business is ridiculously complicated with using a business account, a foundation account etc.
Try to get something done , geez.
Clearly set up by bean counters who don't know what is important to a user.
Hey, don't blame us for web designers' work. Hardly the same group of people.
I called AT&T a few months back and told them if they wish to keep me and the two iphones on my account as a customer they will need to give me a microcell since I do not get coverage at home. They told me I could purchase one for $150. I said that I pay $200 a month for coverage I don't get in my own home centrally located in a major city. They said a microcell costs $150.
That is precisely what my cousin did when he dumped Verizon for ATT. Verizon refused to give him their microcell, whatever it's called, so he and his parents switched to iPhones.

Mass suicides.

But if this not the case and you are correct, I agree that it makes more sense to not release a V4 and just wait for 5to go to both/all. And again, they would announce it now to avoid that leak by the FCC (which they can't block legally)
But there has also been talk that the contract is written such that ATT only has a lock on the newest models, so Apple could 'legally' release a Verizon iPhone 4 at the same time as the ATT iPhone 5. Meaning that tomorrow would be merely the announcement, made before the FCC paperwork could leak it anyway.

No need for a legal block, the FCC offers the option of keeping submissions and approvals private for a certain amount of time. And that time can be extended over and over. This is why you haven't seen nearly as many FCC leaks in the last year.

That test is going to be tough (for a while anyway) considering they may have changed the internals for the Verizon iPhone. Verizon has higher cell requirements for it's handsets than AT&T

Wether they changed the insides or not, how does that mean the test isn't valid? You're still comparing usability across networks.

Really? Even after AT&T made comments about iPhone users "living in the slow lane"?

I'd say it's a done deal. Any doubt in my mind has been resolved.

Can you imagine if come tomorrow Verizon announces an iPad compatible with their network?

Not going to happen. its the iphone. I just spoke to someone at apple. And I don't care how many posts go up saying "yeah sure".
Anyone who disbelieves it after all of this press is living under a bridge.

Yes you are right and that bridge is about to collapse around them. LOL

Well I'm glad. It's great to see iPhone on multiple carriers. It just works better for the consumer. Thanks Apple!

I find this odd. Why would they send out such things from an iPhone? You would think they'd be using one of those Twitter programs used by marketing professionals.

OR...they are trying to flaunt the Verizon iPhone! DOH!

:).

All I know in the Verizon vs AT&T debate is:

When I moved from Texas to L.A. almost 6 years ago (before the iPhone obviously), I was an AT&T customer. Never had an issue with AT&T (Cingular) in Texas. Get to L.A. and ... nothing but dropped calls. My wife was on Verizon, everyone I knew here was on Verizon, they were able to make calls. I switched to Verizon shortly after and have NEVER dropped a call. Mind you I still use a phone for making calls quite a bit. I know - CRAZY!

I have no dog in the whole fight, just need a phone on a carrier that will work. AT&T did not and I have many friends here that jumped ship to AT&T just because of the iPhone and many of them have suffered for their "vanity". Some don't but many do.

Anyhow, all I know is I love my Apple products and computers but, was not willing to switch back to AT&T. I have been waiting for a V-iphone and hopefully we'll see it happen tomorrow.

I can say that I do have a Droid and it's "OK" nothing special. However, it never drops a call. Seems speedy enough for me (and I am a tech/gadget whore) and is never bogged down. I have UNLIMITED DATA for $29 per month and have had it since I was using Blackberry. My wife has UNLIMITED DATA for $29 a month on her BB also. We have NEVER been charged overages on it. I seriously doubt that Verizon will have any issues with the iPhone and their network.

The big issue for me and many others I would imagine, is that I am not due an upgrade until October and not sure if I'm willing to pay full retail on the iPhone. Verizon may pull something special out of their "hats" and offer a good early upgrade offer for some of us. But, I wouldn't count on that. If it happens it'll be a nice surprise and I'll go for it. If it doesn't then I won't be shocked and will have to ponder if the cost is worth it as I'm not one of the people who's identity and soul is projected via a mobile phone. Having said that I do love my gadgets and I do love Apple so we'll have to see. I suppose I could probably get $100-ish on my Droid and charging dock to somebody who is not due an upgrade?

Can any of the Verizon Users post your top CDMA speeds please.....so that we can compare?

My original Droid just got 1.3 down, .8 up. My sister's iPhone just got 1.5 down, .7 up.

the unlimited verizon is offering.. is that truly unlimited? or is it 5gb cap?

Its unlimited, or at least mine is. $29.99 ($22.99 after discount) and I use more than 5gbs per month with no overcharge.
