well i'd like to see the number of people who actually travel outside the US.

It's not just travel, but also resell value. CDMA phones are hard coded to the network they were built for. You can't even take phones between CDMA carriers.

But a gsm phone with it's removable sim means I could sell it on eBay to anyone, even someone out of the US and they can conceivably unlock it and put in any sim they want.

I'm sorry guys, but you are wrong. The CDMA Iphone already exists. In Mexico are two companies, Telcel (AT&T USA) and Iusacell (Verizon USA). Telcel is GSM and Iusacell is CDMA. The Iphone 4 on Iusacell enter to the country the last month. That means that the cdma iphone already exists, but the contract with at&t doesn't leave space for other compnay until the five years

The iPhone sold in Mexico is GSM, not CDMA.

I am lucky enough to have good AT&T coverage in my area. Competition is always good so I am curious as to how AT&T will move to retain people when they are no longer exclusive. Increasing the data cap to 5GB for $25 would be a good start.

Here's why: CDMA is a bottleneck....each user can only enter their Network at about 1 mb max. That'll save their core. I've reached speeds of 5mb on my iPhone w/AT&T. So have others...read their posts.

Are there any Android Users on Verizon reading this thread? Would be great if you could post speedtest numbers.

on my iPhone I am getting right now:
227ms ping
1.31 Mbps Download
1.12 Mbps Upload

My buddy's incredible got 0.88 down and .53 up. It was using the webpage of speedtest.net and he could only click a server a hundred or so miles away.. I saw it peak at 1.10ish.. So same as the iphone tested above

i kind of think that the verizon iPhone will bring them subscribers from AT&T, but I don't know how many users will buy the iPhone who are currently on Verizon.

I switched to AT&T from Verizon when the 3G came out because I wanted the iPhone. I paid my ETF last January because I couldn't make calls on my phone... Back on Verizon now. I don't know if I'll be anywhere close to being eligible for an upgrade, but if I am, I'll probably get one.

To be fair, OS <10 was dead. Its undead, rotting, zombie corpse roamed the earth for at least 10 years longer than it should have. It's no wonder everyone besides the zealots thought so.
Well... let's keep this in perspective. OS 9 was competing with Windows 98, and I find it quite difficult to disparage one so completely in this comparison. Both operating systems were riddled with old technology and code and both badly needed an overhaul. It wasn't until OS X started to gain traction that this game really started to change (and Microsoft never did complete the rewrite they initially aspired to with what would become Vista).

Imagine how different history would have been had NeXT actually happened as a project at Apple. Something very similar to OS X might have been released maybe 3 years before Windows 95. Microsoft would have been ended.
Which brings me to this. A NeXT-based project would not necessarily have trounced Windows. Windows had (still has) a strong market share and mindshare which is very difficult to attack, regardless of quality of product. Even if Scully had a stellar operating system, I still have doubts that he would have been able to do much against Microsoft.

I truly believe John Scully singlehandedly set back the entire computing industry by almost 15 years.
He did damage, but I doubt anywhere near that much.

Heard it here first...

No Verizon iPhone till 2012!!

But really when the iPhone does go to Verizon will it still be hindered in the fact that it can't do data and voice at the same time over 3G? Not a big deal for most I'm sure, but I do it everyday so for me that's the dealbreaker.

Can't wait to finally have an "Apple to Apple" comparison of whether AT&T was scape-goating San Francisco regulations for their inability to roll out a functioning network. If Verizon comes on line with city-wide coverage, AT&T is out of excuses.

That test is going to be tough (for a while anyway) considering they may have changed the internals for the Verizon iPhone. Verizon has higher cell requirements for it's handsets than AT&T

not true...It's difficult but not impossible to move from a VZ to Sprint. You may not have access to 3G, but you can still use your phone

but what if it isnt an iphone announcement, what if??

tomorrow wont come fast enough, even though i want the iphone to come to vzw so i can give it a try i dont think its going to happen.

in my area, at&t has very low reception, though verizon is full reception. so i'd consider changing. however, are you able to use data and call at the same time on verizon. i've heard you can't - i.e. talking on phone while loading the maps or checking email. if verizon can't handle that, i'll be sticking with at&t.

If AT&T has low reception where you live, then you're probably on Edge and can't even do voice/data at the same time anyway.

Not necessarily. There are plenty of areas with excellent AT&T signals but no 3G, and areas with 3G which do not have reliable voice coverage. I'd also infer from happydude's message that he's accustomed to voice and data at the same time, so he's probably got 3G.

Yep, only thing that bothers me about AT&T is the latency.

Wow. Here at the Upper East Side I get on 3G Down 0.54 Mbps, Up 1.39 Mbps and Ping 263 ms (If I knew how to post a screenshot I would, but this was less work).

I will wait and see how the Verizon phone is doing. My phone is up for renewal in summer, we extended my wife's contract on the family plan so that will have to wait. Maybe AT7T gets better now. It will all depend on the reports, I won't spring wagons immediately - and if it is limited to CDMA and I cannot use it elsewhere its useless anyway for me.

The real Verizon quality test will be whether the iPhone works in a packed stadium. I normally have decent coverage w/ ATT, but once I get into a baseball or football game poof goes my data and often voice too. Once the Verizon iPhone is will populated it will be interesting to see how it performs.

You can't. It's the way the CDMA receivers work. A friend of mine that works for Verizon who loves to jab at my AT&T service has been gleefully telling me the LTE handsets will allow this because of 2 different receivers. I asked what happens if you are out of range of 4G coverage.... his glee fades and frowns. He's good at not breaking any confidentiality agreements (jerk!) but I somehow think the functionality dies if not in 4G from his reactions. Will be interesting to see when the LTE handsets do come out into the wild.

You can't.
There has been discussion of CDMA technology which will allow this over the past year or so.
But as far as I know, it hasn't been done. It may not even be available/mature/out of development.
Maybe someone else has kept on top of that news.

I was on the floor at Staples Center with my VZ Droid and had full service.

ugh, you can't do that on AT&T if you lose 3g/fake 4g coverage either.

Why get mad at the carrier? Sounds like poor planning/research on your part. I'd NEVER buy a phone, or anything requiring a long term contract, unless I knew it worked, and/or had all the details. It's like signing a 30 year mortgage, then complaining the interest rate is too high...

Your mortgage comparison is overblown, but cute.

All of the "coverage maps" have all of the areas I usually frequent well inside their lines. Also, I wanted the device because I liked its capabilities apart from everything else, and I still do like the device for its non-phone capabilities. Unfortunately, as a phone it's not very good. However, most importantly, I need an iPhone because I'm an iPhone developer. I do, however, expect it to work as a phone, especially where AT&T says it will cover.

Well, I'm in Cincinnati, and while we have quite a few iPhone users in this area, for whatever reason, the networks(all of them), are overbuilt based on demand.

We currently have AT&T 3g that's probably better than most(speed), Verizon LTE, Sprint WiMax, and Tmobile HSPA+ and Cincinnati Bell(regional carrier) that has a 3G network that hits 7.0 Mbit +, but their phones are trash. :p

It's a good market for mobile. :D

"The iPhone is built for speed, but that's not what you get with a CDMA phone. I'm not sure iPhone users are ready for life in the slow lane."

Ha. After 3 years of EDGE coverage in my area, I will gladly move over to the "slow" EVDO speeds that Verizon has had here for years and years.

This move is going to crush AT&T.
