maybe Jobs is really sick and that is why he wasn't there? Remember how bad he looked for the new air introduction?

It's not a new product. It's essentially a new carrier announcement. He may have deemed it not worth his time.

Besides, he's probably slave driving for iPad 2 release in a few months.

Don't be ridiculous, Jobs is fine. This was a Verizon event. Steve Job's would have taken all of the thunder from Verizon if he was there ;)

It's still strange how that impacts the Memory Capacity. I can install Apps and it does not impact it....but Verizon installs an App, and the memory capacity goes down 2GB. Something is not right here.

They had a bunch of NON Verizon apps pre-installed (like the game Infinity Blade and stuff). Just cool apps to show off the iPhone that WON'T be pre-installed on the final retail versions.

They were pre-installed only as part of the demos.

Gimme!

I've been using an iPod tethered to a WiFi enabled Phone on Verizon to get my iPhone fix. I've experienced the data halt when a voice call comes in, but I would still gladly trample all over my mother to get a bona fide iPhone this time. I'm sure the Droid may be superior in many ways, but I am used to the interface now and have a lot of apps I paid for to use on the iPod that I can now transfer to the upcoming iPhone (such as Navigon). With a Droid I'd have to start from scratch. Even though I've given it a trial run, other than the Google Navigation available for free on it, there was nothing really compelling about it to merit switching over.

And here's the thing: I've been to over 20 cities in the U.S., including Las Vegas. While my iPod smoothly surfed the Internet via Verizon's network everywhere I went, iPhone users on AT&T struggled to even get a call through, especially when I was in Sin City. :D

I'd answer the phone or ignore the call depending on who it was. What would you do?

Good answer.

Pretty soon we'll be hearing a groundswell of opinions that "wtf was it with the voice *or* data FUD - the Verizon Iphone actually lets you make phone calls. What else is important?".

I know that some members here question Verizon being able to support Facetime, well I just noticed this at the Apple site:

http://www.apple.com/iphone/notify-me/

"Whichever network you choose, you’ll get FaceTime video calling, the high-resolution Retina display, a 5-megapixel camera, HD video recording, long battery life, and all the other great features of iPhone 4."

So, it looks like FaceTime will work on Verizon. I've waited 2 years for this, and I might wait a few more months to get the white iPhone.

Yeah, FaceTime is a feature that's built-in and works on wifi. This really says nothing about it working on 3G.

I can't even recall the amount of people on here that said very matter-of-factly that this would never happen. They gave absolutely no logical reasons to back up their claims. They all look pretty stupid now.

It's this simple: Alot of people want and would pay $$ for an iPhone on Verizon.
Apple and Verizon are in buisiness to make money and saw a giant opportunity....END OF DISCUSSION!!!

This was a no brainer.

Hope T-Mobile is next. Want an iPhone but travel a lot to Europe so need it to be able to run on the GSM networks there so only CDMA Verizon iPhone is not good. Would get AT&T iPhone but the network sucks too much so its not worth it.

Verizon:
iPhone that runs on a good network but won't work outside the US.

AT&T:
iPhone that runs on a bad network but will work outside the US.

Come on :apple: it doesn't have to be this way. Plz introduce a T-Mobile iPhone.

I know everyone has their own opinions, but I usually travel to Wisconsin from Minnesota for a week during the summer to go camping and stuff. With ATT, I often lose ALL signals, even in towns. Also, it seems that almost the entire state is in EDGE. Not fast EDGE either — the type of EDGE where you take about three to four minutes to open a web page if at all (vs. about 5-8 seconds on WIFI). Also, there are a lot of dead zones in the Twin Cities metro area, which has about 2 million or so people.

These dead zones and super slow zones are much bigger problems for me than the THEORETICAL speed of ATT's network.

CDMA is bad for several reasons. No sim means you're royally f'cked if you want to change providers. No sim means your only option abroad is roaming (can't just buy a cheap pay-as-you-go local sim), not that you could anyway because almost nowhere supports CDMA outside the USA.

Pity ATT's network is so crap, it seems to have given GSM a bad name in the USA. Pity Verizon chose to adopt a dying technology, it gives their otherwise reasonable network a bad name. I don't understand how the rest of the world got it so right, yet America got it so wrong. Every time I'm in the USA or Canada and have to deal with a mobile network I want to shoot myself in the head.

I've been on both Verizon and AT&T. The difference is really not that noticeable, except in certain, especially rural, areas. Plus, VZW offers slower 3G. I'll be sticking with AT&T, and hope that they bring Mobile Hotspot to the iPhone in the near future.

its totally fake!.... jk

K so I have questions!!!
how do we know its 4.2.5, was that what they said it would ship with? or is that temporary? Will 4.3 be out by february?! and will that merge gsm and cdma?

My biggest question is!!... what do we know about the bootrom/firmware? will I be able to jailbreak within the month of february?

will mywi 4.0 also work? even though it has hot spot... I would still rather use mywi 4.0

i feel like a retard reading the concerns about verizon not supporting voice and data at the same time. why is that bad exactly?

is it like you were downloading a song and then your mom calls. she doesn't let you go for 25 minutes and when she finally hangs up the song is still not downloaded and has to continue from where you left before your phone rang? cos i don't see how it's that bad. what else would be a real life situation where this affects the user?

can you receive texts or voicemail while you're on the phone?

i'm confused.

One of the reasons I switched to Android was the lack of open tethering on iOS - on O2 in the UK they wanted to charge users a heavy fee for tethering (£15 a month iirc) despite the (at the time) unlimited data plans, yet the same carrier would let you tether any Android phone without additional charge. When FroYo (Android 2.2) was rolled out you could use your phone as a WiFi hotspot and not even have to worry about using a USB cable, something which has proved incredibly handy for me.

Glad to see this functionality apparently unrestricted to iOS users in the new update.

Colour me surprised. I never thought that I would see it this late in the game. With LTE on the horizon for both CDMA and HSPA/GSM carriers, I would have thought that Apple would have waited for LTE.

As a Canadian, this release does not affect me directly since we have multiple HSPA carriers to choose from and I doubt that Telus and Bell will bother picking up the CDMA versions since they have HSPA+ networks almost everywhere now.

I suppose that people who are already on Verizon are already used to not having data and voice at the same time and not having their phones work in Europe. It's probably going to be popular with Americans who never travel outside of North America or don't take their cell phone with them on vacation.

This does open up the iPhone to some markets in Asia that are still on CDMA but it remains to be seen how many in those markets can afford an iPhone and related data plan.

I look forward to when LTE replaces CDMA and I hope that CDMA carriers implementing LTE include HSPA compatibility to provide more roaming options for tourists with HSPA phones.

Your comment points out to why the leaked images of the iPhone frame a couple days ago are interesting. The Verizon iPhone is suppose to support CDMA and gsm (the Qualcomm chip inside). The leaked frame from a couple days ago has the same seam positions as the Verizon iPhone, AND it included a sim tray. I think Verizon just gets a 5 month head start to lock customers into a 2 year contract with the "gimped" Verizon iPhone. Tim Cook said the agreement was a non-exclusive multiyear contract and in June Apple may release the same phone, but with the sim tray and gsm enabled. This June iPhone then may be able to be bought unlocked/subsidized and used on Sprint, T-Mobile and of course ATT.

No self moded white iPhone for Verizon customers... And you can't cuss at agents...

If this new hardware has addressed the 'death grip', as suggested in the article, then will the uk get version of the new hardware with a sim card slot?

If not that seems pretty unfair to the uk market and i'd personally go Android before buying an iphone with death grip, knowing the US has a new fixed version.
