Verizon iPhone 5 Will Not Offer Simultaneous Voice and Data [Update: It Was A Hardware Decision]

That's kind of my thinking.

I used to think it was an advantage [simultaneous voice/data] and one reason I stuck with AT&T, but I can't even recall the last time I used used it. My signal at the World HQ here in Vilano is at best so-so and at worst nonexistent. My BILs Verizon voice was outstanding (and a neighbor on V said the same thing).

Hmm...

You ever been on the phone with the navigation on?
Go ahead and set up your navigation and drive passed the street they want you to turn on...tell me what happens...I'll wait.

You have two choices, hang up the phone or turn around and get back on path unless you were trying to avoid the path, then your only choice is to hang up. This really sucks. I handle most of my client calls on the road. I was really hoping for this.

Well I can only assume that Sprint will follow suit, to bad, I switched from AT&T due to problem with my wife's phone that they did not seem to care about, and boy do I miss talking and surfing at the same time. Was hoping iPhone 5 solved that but I still have one more year with Sprint and maybe by the next iPhone, maybe this issue will be resolved. If not, I guess back to AT&T

Rumor has it that NYC is one of the areas where T-Mobile has refarmed their 3G "4G" network to 1900MHz, but I haven't been able to confirm that since I canceled my T-Mobile prepaid account a while ago. The downside is that in the meantime, unless you are in a 1900MHz zone, not only do you not get LTE, you don't even get 3G but have to settle for EDGE (and also don't get simultaneous data and voice).

True. I might wait to see what happens. T-mobile announced their campaign to bring in more unlocked iPhone users and will reportedly have nano sims by October. This is based largely on their claim that their new 3G "4G" will have a larger footprint by the end of this year. I dont mind 3G speeds until they switch to AWS. I just dont want to get stuck with Verizon for 2 years without the possibility of simultaneous voice+data and would also like to lower my bill, they are getting too pricey for me.

I will NEVER go with Verizon without simultaneous voice and data - what a JOKE! I feel bad for everyone on that network.

Same here. I was going to switch this time, but glad I saw this before tonight.

I'll keep AT&T which is cheaper for me and I'm sure it'll be fine. Sucks not having LTE roaming support, but I spend most of my time here in the USA so it's all good. Only occasional trips out of the country!

Verizon would have been nice, though, since I could have gotten their complementary unlock after 60 days.

Apple REALLY **** the bed on this one. Sorry, Apple defenders. This is the ultimate example of putting form over function. I can't watch any of these iPhone 5 ads with them *orgasming* over the ~design~ without cringing anymore.

I've had AT&T forever and was excited to switch to Verizon tonight. This is a deal breaker.

Yes, I admit simultaneous voice+data is mostly a convenience, but except in one instance- tethering.

With the new Share Everything plans, tethering is, for the first time in like forever, openly permitted on your existing data plan. I was planning on tethering with Verizon's LTE all the time. But now that LTE+voice can't run simultaneously, if I'm tethering and I get a call (or even a text??), I will have to disconnect.

The tethering issue is the biggest reason why this is a dealbreaker. Apple defenders should take note that this is not just an 'inconvenience'. It is a MAJOR annoyance and the reason why I will be sticking with AT&T.

Also, don't forget about apps that run in the background that need an active data connection (while not necessarily always CONSUMING much data). Having those disconnect when you get a call is a major annoyance too.

The iPhone 5 disappointments keep piling on.

Next we'll hear how horrible the battery life is on 4G LTE.

Bummer, I was looking forward to this, though generally, I've been fine without it now for years on CDMA carriers. At least my calls don't drop and my data speeds are consistent. Definitely couldn't say that about AT&T.

When multimedia and web browsing and all that other stuff smartphones do these days a bigger screen is very welcome. Of course it is an adjustment at first especially when you came from a 3.5" screen like I did with the iPhone 4. But after awhile you go back to an iPhone sized screen and you wondered how you ever got by using a device with a screen so small.

I will say that the outgoing iPod Nano had the PERFECT size per function of any device I have ever used. Too bad they got all rectangular again.

I used an Android phone (Nexus One) for nearly 2 years, and I also have used my parents' phones (S3 and Motorola Electriy, the latter has about a 4.3" screen I think). If I were to use an Android phone again, I actually think I'd prefer the Electrify (if it ever gets ICS) since I find the Galaxy screen just too big. The only advantage of the wider screen is slightly more room on the keyboard. I think 4-4.5" is the sweet spot. Bigger and it gets unwieldy.

The Lumia 920 is an interesting phone that managed not to be much wider than the 5 or 4S. To me, that's more appealing than the S3.

I totally agree with Phil Schiller, it's easy to make a phone bigger, who doesn't know how to do that? It's much more difficult to make it smaller, but not only maintaining, but improving on the feature set.

I don't take issue with what Apple sacrificed to do what they did. And they did a great job. You must have missed my true point - which was that while you might not be "trying" to be an Apple "fanboy" (a phrase which should just be stricken) it's hard to take you seriously when you speak in hyperbole. And as someone who owns an iPhone 4 (and all versions prior) and also a Skyrocket (after doing research and buying what I thought was the best at the time) I can counter your arguments with the simple truth that Apple AND other phone manufacturers make fantastic phones. They are different. Some are similar (let's not go there). Both OSes (Android and iOS) have come a long way and both have great advantages and faults. Different uses cases and people necessitate diversity in the marketplace. Buying an iPhone isn't better - it's just better for you. Buying an Android phone doesn't make someone buying a crappy phone - like the iPhone - it's buying the better phone for that person.

I am quoting the post below - because I love my iPhone 4 - but this resonates with me and why I almost exclusively (now) use my Skyrocket. That and some other little bells and whistles (some having to do with ease of sharing info across apps and social networking) make Android (and the Skyrocket) attractive to me. Plus I get the best of both worlds. I get to use iOS (on phone and iPad) and Android as well.

But I would be lying if I said I would buy a new iPhone any time soon. Unless they go to 4.3/4.5" on their screen which is unlikely for many years. My iPhone 4 will be used until it no longer can be.

(of course this could all change)

Once again, AT&T has the upper hand with the iPhone 5

Yeah when they throttle your data so low when on a phone call, that loading a webpage takes forever! Used to be a cool feature for AT&T and since last October or so, it's not even worth using. It is WAY TO SLOW!!!!! If you call AT&T, they will tell you they throttle this way now. So, not an advantage really.

I'm in NYC and never had a problem with either my iPhone 4 or Skyrocket (on LTE) being throttled while on a call. Maybe it's your area

You are all very naive. Of course the ORIGINAL iPHONE CARRIER is still going to have a main advantage, despite this being Apple's fault.

APPLE: Why do you find it so hard to make people happy, when all you had to do was add a 2 dollar antena? I'm an Apple fan, buf this is rediculous! You've made millions, no BILLIONS of dollars and you resort to this? Shame on you!!!!!

Nope, hasn't come up, that's why I said:

At this point since it doesn't seem to be an issue for me/us, I might make the switch because of the better voice on Verizon here around the homestead.

Alternately I could buy a microcell (AT&T said no freebies since I show as a "good" coverage area), _or_ something like a Wilson signal booster.

I rarely make phone calls. I don't really care about simultaneous internet and calls. I'd rather have better connectivity and free tethering. Verizon LTE.

tethering is indeed a very good reason to want simultaneous data & voice

I was thinking to myself if I would really miss that capability (I'm on an AT&T MVNO and 'unofficially tether') and it never even occurred to me that it would really screw up tethering (well, if you're a person that takes voice calls - which i do). I would indeed miss simultaneous data & voice.

I have perfect 5 bars of fast 3G performance, but when on a call it is throttled. Many threads on this and called AT&T and they confirmed this.

If i found myself in charge of deploying LTE tech on the carrier side, I wouldn't deploy it until it could handle voice and data at the same time on one connection.

No, my car already has a nav system, I don't need to use turn by turn navigation on my phone.

It's a MAJOR annoyance, for you. I hate getting pinged with alerts while on a call. I can't recall the last time I was on the phone and told someone to hold on a sec while I searched for something online on it.
