Once Again....

Apple has given me a reason to stay on TMobile. I would have seriously considered a switch to Sprint because of the price point, but not without voice\data. I use this ALL THE TIME. If you never had it, you won't miss it. I really want to get off this Android platform, but what choice do I have???? I'm not unlocking an iPhone and going to 2g service in 2012!!! This is a colossal oversight by Apple and the carriers for not making sure this feature was included.

Two things:
1. I have wifi at home, work and school, three places were I make 99% of my calls. Therefore I can use voice on LTE and data on wifi.

2. I use third party calling apps occasionally, and if needed I can use these as they are data apps and won't restrict me to just voice usage.

But if I wasn't satisfied with those two things I would switch to AT&T. US is one of the only networks in the world that still has such high CDMA usage. Apple needed to draw the line somewhere. Verizon and Spirt were well aware of the risks of CDMA.

Coming in 2019...

What a load of crap!

Phil Schiller himself said iPhone 5 would support simultaneous voice+data. Watch the keynote again.

I saw the keynote and again and Phil said that the I Phone 5 has dynamic antennas so that it can switch to different networks on the fly. Don't know if that means voice or data at the same time or not.

The whole promise of LTE is such a joke. Meant to be a universal standard for a global phone among all carriers. Yet there are 25 bands worldwide.

Probably has to do with some bands for military use that can't be changed, since defense takes a priority over commercial convenience.

Does anyone know whether the whole VoLTE protocol can be implemented through software, or must it be hardware? In order words, would the 5S be the next iPhone that could feasibly support voice/data on Verizon?

I will NEVER go with Verizon without simultaneous voice and data - what a JOKE! I feel bad for everyone on that network.

Please don't feel bad for us!!! We are LOVING our six times more LTE coverage than all other networks & blazing speeds that your carrier couldn't catch up to in a year even if we stopped building out our infrastructure now..
I suppose it is unfortunate that this IMO minuscule detail will keep people on wack ass networks like AT&T. Seriously.. you'll take the independently ranked (consumer reports, jd power & associates) WORST network in the United States b/c their antiquated technology allows for the use of a single minor feature that the top rated network doesn't yet?? Well, P.T. Barnum put it best: there's one born every minute...

Why is this? On my Verizon Galaxy Nexus, when I have a 4G LTE connection, I can access the internet and be in a call with the CDMA radio at the same time. How does the iPhone 5 not work like that as well?

It's bigger, though? Obviously iPhone sacrifices some things for its size.

I'm confused as to why something that's been possible on AT&T 3G forever is not available on Verizon 4G?

It is available for Verizon. Just not the iPhone. The magical single radio chip won't allow both data and voice. If they would have put two chips in there like the other LTE VZW phones Problem solved

In Shock!

My wife and I were ready to end or unlimited ATT plan to switch to Verizon...until now.

That decision is much more difficult now. We love the talk and surf, but our 3GS drops calls all the time on ATT. The main point of the phone is to talk, so I suppose it better to have more reliable service than to have talk and surf.

How accurate are the coverage maps anyways? It says VZW LTE coverage in Southern Connecticut is much better than ATT. But who really knows? It says ATT has almost no 4G coverage.

This completely kills the deal for me. I was about ready to migrate all 3 of my lines to Verizon... but this is a deal breaker. I don't think I'll get a 5 at all. Only wanted it for LTE, but VZW is a nogo, and AT&T doesn't have LTE in my area. So there's no point.

Most LTE phones in Verizon are NOT global phones, the SIII among them, which means that they are useless when you go abroad. And the few which are, couple of Motorolas, do not have as many bands as the Iphone5 has. Could that have something to do with the issue that we are talking about?

Actually, the iPhone 5 is not for him on Verizon. He should get the Samsung Galaxy S III instead, which works like he wants on Verizon.

Exactly. WHy aren't people more pissed at Apple for not having two chips? Tell US Jony Ive why we don't need it. Is it because the phone is so magnificent and fits so well our hand?

How nice of Apple to pull this BS. Verizon has in fact tested VoLTE on two Android Smartphones so they are planning on rolling it out, most likely when they are done with their LTE buildout at the end of next year.

AT&T on the other hand will still have a ways to go for their LTE rollout. This in turn makes the iP5 obsolete and will require you to upgrade to yet another iPhone when your iP5 is still rock solid and performing well after two years.

Don't misunderstand me, I am pre-ordering for Verizon tomorrow, no friggin way I would go back to AT&T. But Apple cut corners an touts HD Voice which the US will NOT support as some one off cover.

Get an S3 like everyone else. Two weeks on VZW AND DON'T MISS IPHONE OR AT&T!

This is a total load of crap! All I heard was when lte is out on Verizon you can talk and surf. Great, my wife's thunderbolt can do more than a new iPhone. Yuppie I can take a panoramic shot with my 4s but with the fancy smancy 5 I can't talk and surf or get directions. What good is the share everything with tethering if I can't use the device both ways.

Colossal fail in my opinion. At least I get to sleep and keep my $1300 I would have spent on two phones out right.

If you're at home chatting up a storm on the phone, why not just use a computer at the same time?

If you're driving and using google maps why not just tell the person you'd call them back so you can concentrate on your whereabouts?

If people are so unhappy about iPhone 5, why not just get a GS3?

I'm just gonna stick with AT&T and get an AT&T iPhone 5.

My only complaint with AT&T has been how terrible their HSPA+ service is in NYC - it's fine everywhere else. Since their LTE in NYC is by all accounts amazing, and since their HSPA+ elsewhere is a great fallback, and since you can still use voice+data when need be using the AT&T iPhone 5... that's the way to go. I just hope that the transition between LTE and HSPA+ is seamless when you need to make a call when using LTE. Like, if you're browsing the web on LTE and you need to make a call, will it seamlessly go to HSPA+ ?

I've gone back and forth about whether or not I'll upgrade to the 5 on Verizon. I currently have the iPhone 4 on Verizon so I'm used to not being able to talk and use data simultaneously on the cell network.

It seems to me that the Verizon iPhone 5 is still the best choice except for the simultaneous voice/data issue. If you look at the LTE bands that the Verizon iPhone 5 supports, it looks to me that it's much more of an LTE world phone than the AT&T iPhone 5. From what I can tell, both phones can use international GSM and HSPA+ frequencies so unless I'm mistaken, there's no difference there.

If I upgrade from the Verizon iPhone 4 to the Verizon iPhone 5, I'll still have the same cell voice/data limitation I have now, but I'll gain a phone that I can literally use on every continent on the planet -- whether it's on LTE, GSM, or HSPA+. That's a huge positive to me.

The AT&T iPhone 5 looks to me to be a very North American-centric LTE device with GSM and HSPA+ coverage abroad. The Verizon iPhone 5 looks to me to be a very world-centric LTE device (plus Verizon in the U.S.) with GSM and HSPA+ coverage abroad, as well.

Am I missing something?

Just spoke with a VZW engineer. He said lack of handset support for VoLTE is the issue. Angry as I am with Apple over this, they're being sort is hosed by other handset manufacturers who are leading from behind. VZW won't deploy VoLTE until more than one or two phones support it.
