This is a minor problem, but I still plan on switching from AT&T to Verizon, simply because I want the low-spectrum LTE that will be more likely to penetrate the concrete skyscraper walls in midtown Manhattan. AT&T = 0 bars. "No service." Anything would be an improvement.

Can anyone else confirm that this is true? Not doubting the poster, just very curious as I've never heard this before but would love if it was! :D

Wow. I know most people don't think this is a big deal breaker, but my mom has Verizon and has asked me multiple times why she can't do this. If she's on a conference call, she can't make reservations for dinner (for example) until the call is over. That's some ********.

I created my account just to thumbs up your signature.... I just LOLed for a good 5 minutes :D

wow I just saw this, so disappointing ...now im double thinking about waking up for this one. I hope this is untrue and just a rumor.

same thing can be said about fire/carbon monoxide detectors, how many times do you have a fire or gas leak at your house anyway? Stop being an apologist.

lol it was a joke. It sucks, but not enough to keep me from Verizon. Their LTE is everywhere where I am.

This is an odd statement. I work in a concrete skyscraper in another major city...my Verizon iPad gets far worse service when compared to my AT&T iPhone 3GS...of course that could be because the 3GS doesn't use LTE...

I will NEVER go with Verizon without simultaneous voice and data - what a JOKE! I feel bad for everyone on that network.

You mean, you feel bad for everyone with that PHONE.

EVERY. OTHER. 4G. LTE. DEVICE. Supports simultaneous. They added another radio - Apple refused because their signal reception was inferior, forcing them to add a second one anyway.

And the answer about not needing it since 4G would support it in the future? Here's all I have to say about that:

"Nobody needs to make calls and surf the web at the SAME TIME!!!!"

For a change, I'm going to defend Apple here. To include another Gobi chip-not antenna but chip I get the feeling-would've been a sucker of battery life and made the iPhone's LTE look like a first generation LTE phone.

VoLTE tech is out there and just hasn't been implemented, and this will force Verizon to do it.

Don't get me wrong, I'd still like a larger battery and third antenna. But...I fully understand Apple's decision. This phone isn't too backwards compatible as a general theme, and is here for the future, not the past.

It wouldn't surprise me if that was the last decision jobs made when he was supposedly working on this phone back in 2011. It almost forces CDMA to go the way of the Dodo to make the phone useful, and I doubt too many headset makers would hate to see that.

Seems like an odd decision. The Evo 4g LTE and I believe the Galaxy S 3 can do data and talk at the same time on Sprints CDMA 3g network without even needing LTE.

voLTE

That was the intent with LTE (long term evolution), to carry both voice and data over the LTE mechanism, not data over LTE and voice over an old technology. We also need that for wide band voice. Some carriers are more evolved than others.

Please don't feel bad for us!!! We are LOVING our six times more LTE coverage than all other networks & blazing speeds that your carrier couldn't catch up to in a year even if we stopped building out our infrastructure now..
I suppose it is unfortunate that this IMO minuscule detail will keep people on wack ass networks like AT&T. Seriously.. you'll take the independently ranked (consumer reports, jd power & associates) WORST network in the United States b/c their antiquated technology allows for the use of a single minor feature that the top rated network doesn't yet?? Well, P.T. Barnum put it best: there's one born every minute...
AT&T works great here in Los Angeles, 30Mbps download on their LTE here... i work in IT so being able to talk and use data at the same time is a must have for me - I can remote into desktops from my phone while on the call with a user if need be. If I can't do that on Verizon, be it an Apple limitation or VZ then I can't use the iPhone on that network. If you think that makes me a sucker, well, I guess I don't know what to say about that.

Yes - when I first typed that the story made it seem like it was a verizon issue, it wasnt later until it was updated that we knew it was the phone and not VZ.

Actually, it sounds like Apple refused because they didn't want to add a second radio to take up more room and suck up battery and space. Perhaps they could have added a third antenna to let the chip multitask, but that might have been sub-optimal, as well.

We don't know all the reasons, or the discussions between Verizon and Apple. Yes, every other VZW phone supports it, but no other Verizon phone uses the new Qualcomm chip. Did Verizon require SVDO or similar support from other OEMs but not Apple? Were they given a choice between selling a phone with European LTE support (which no other phone in their lineup supports) and SVDO? Did Verizon know but not care for whatever reason (an excuse to sell more Droids and Galaxy SIIIs, a feeling that people wouldn't care, etc.)? The Verizon/Sprint model is a special production unit for Apple. I'm guessing that if Verizon really put up a fuss Apple would have acquiesced.

Don't get me wrong, it's an odd decision by Apple, but I think that Verizon knew about it.

Customers: For the iPhone 5, please give us simultaneous data and voice with fast LTE like Android phones have.

Apple: No. But you can have a 5th row of icons instead. That's just as good, right? Static icons, not ones that can change to, say, reflect the actual temperature outside. That's crazy talk.

Why? It's the better technology.

Code division multiple access itself is superior to time-division, but CDMA2000 vs. WCMDA (3GSM) is a bit of a different story. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Data downloads are faster on 3GSM than CDMA2000. 3GSM has allowed voice and data simultaneously since Day 1.

To be fair, the 4S didn't have it either, and customers bought it in droves. And if Verizon gets off their @$$ and adds VoLTE, all their LTE customers would benefit (since the phones would use a single radio and suck up less battery), it wouldn't be an issue, either. Maybe Verizon knew about it and said they didn't care since they plan to implement VoLTE next year anyway. Maybe they saw the design in total as a positive as the iPhone 5, unlike the other phones in their lineup, will allow their customers to roam on Vodafone's (their part-owner) LTE networks in Europe, saving them money.

Why is this? On my Verizon Galaxy Nexus, when I have a 4G LTE connection, I can access the internet and be in a call with the CDMA radio at the same time. How does the iPhone 5 not work like that as well?

It states the issue. It required a second antenna, and Apple didn't want to add the second antenna. The Galaxy Nexus could add a second antenna because it's the size of a bus compared to iPhone 5

Hmm, of all the things I hate about my iPhone, iTunes wasn't one of them. I never touched it after the initial sync.

You obviously don't use it to sync documents between your Windows PC and iPad. iTunes is pretty clunky, and it's about time for a slim down.

I had no idea that 4G LTE was data-only. Is this because of some future plan to go to IP-based voice and transmit over LTE? That would be awesome since voice over Skype is so much clearer than the crap 16k audio we get over phones.

I used to be able to do this talk and surf at the same time on AT&T. I haven't missed it on Verizon.

Name me 3 occasions where you absolutely must talk on the phone and browse the web at the same time on a phone?

Data + voice isn't limited to data "on the phone" it's data period. I tether and talk a LOT, it's part of my business and how I make a living. I do this on many occasions, not just one or three. That means iPhone on Verizon is simply not an option for me. Luckily I'm already on AT&T so I don't need to decide between switching carriers or switching phones.
