Except during the first generation iPhone there was that little thing called a CONTRACT to AT&T. The evidence is pretty clear that is coming to an end. So, time to start making phones for other carriers!!!

Thats not what i meant, what i mean is that if Apple's plan was to make a CDMA iPhone that could be software upgraded to turn on an LTE chip, they could have just done the same and made the 1st gen Edge only iPhone with a 3G chip that was able to turn on with a software upgrade.....something Apple won't do.

I think Google would try to block the iPhone from going to another carrier. Because if the iPhone went to another network who would buy an Android phone?

Being serious here.

I know many people on Verizon and Sprint waiting for the iPhone.

If this is true....and the rumors prove accurate on a September release, do you people reckon such a deal with VZ would be announced at WWDC in June? Or would they wait until August or so to announce VZ availability?

I say August. Or even September. I don't see any other carrier being added until sometime in the fall. Just in time for the holiday season. Perhaps they can do it a bit earlier for back to school. But I really think this is going to be a push for holiday, not earlier. So I am thinking a release date in Oct. or even November. Making Black Friday even worse then normal this year.

and that GSM/CDMA dual chip that is in the works has faded out without any recent mention that Apple snatched up a ton of them. or even a mention they are ready for prime time

Plus if Apple was about to embrace CDMA after all, why make a GSM only ipad.

I'm not a pollyanna on the iPhone coming to Verizon. But the latest Android sales indicate some consumers will not go to ATT even for an iPhone, and Apple can't afford to lose market share with a stiff competitor in Android chipping away.

1) Verizon already sells a "World Phone," with CDMA and GSM.

2) Perhaps the iPad's guts were already developed by the time Apple nailed down a deal w/ Verizon? There are lots of other reasons too.

there's a lot of reasons that Android is compelling. It's open app market place being the big one.

As others have said, Apple makes iPhone ads. I highly doubt they will begin letting Verizon make ads for the iPhone. Bogus rumor. The AT&T deal runs out in 2012 anyway. There's no way they would agree to reduce the terms to 2010.

Yay, another US wireless carrier's network to get bogged down because of iphone data.

I know what you mean, however, since on Verizon you can't talk and surf at the same time, maybe that limitation will be a blessing in keeping people from living on the web in order to receive calls.

Doesn't bother me if it does as long as I can stay with AT&T.

But I still bet it never will, why would they make it for two carriers? Why put it on Verizon with all the Droid handsets? Why would they make the iPad AT&T exclusive?

Why would they make it for two carriers? More market share.

Why with all the droids? More market share, plus AT&T has Android phones as well, so what is the difference?

Why iPad on AT&T? Perhaps that was the bone that let them off the hook to sell iPhone on other carriers now, rather then later. Everyone keeps thinking this was done to get Apple to stay with AT&T longer, but what if it was the reverse?

Thank the lord I hope this is true so that Verizon fanboys could finally shut the he** up and stop whining. And so it could free up AT&T's network for those of us who are happy where we are.

If you lived in the boondocks you'd understand why some of us are unhappy.
I think I'm paying the same price as everyone else, and the service here is bad. I still like my phone though.
There is no guarantee that the service is better on iphone with verizon, but everyone else I know likes verizon better up here.
I thought that the forums were about talking about things like this?
Too bad it makes you uncomfortable, luckily you can always scroll up or down.:D

there's a lot of reasons that Android is compelling. It's open app market place being the big one.

The general consumer doesn't even know what "Open App Market" means. For the general consumer Android is compelling because people like hardware keyboards, attractive price points, selection, and buy one get one free offers. Oh, and not everyone is willing to switch to get an iPhone.

Apple and AT&T make their own ads, and so does Verizon.

That's only true to a point. It's not uncommon for a large company such as Apple to hire a branding/ad agency. The best advertisers or creatives in the field are NOT going to work in-house when they can work for an independent studio/agency with a wider range of projects.

Epic FAIL!
Apple handles the iPhone ads, not the wireless provider. This should belong on page 2. Let alone, they're also an unreliable source.
:apple:

Yup.
No way Apple would let Verizon make any ads for the iPhone.
Apple completely controls their image. They make their own ads.

These rumors are rumors.

I truly believe that people who have a vested ($) interest in Verizon (read employees and shareholders) are the ones who keep creating and spreading these rumors. Their goal is simple: delay the exodus of more and more customers to AT&T until Verizon gets the iPhone in 2012 (or when their LTE has a big enough footprint in 2013-2014). Apple will never create a CDMA iPhone....CDMA is slow, has no future......which is why Verizon will be forced to support parallel networks for many years to come. At least with T-Mobile and AT&T, LTE is an 'upgrade' to the current network.

Don't get me wrong, I like competition. However, Verizon can not compete: High termination fees ($350), no concurrent voice/data, slow speeds (CDMA), and no future.

You really don't think AT&T has been letting people know it has the iPhone for the last three years? And contracts get renegotiated all the time. Sheeesh!

Ah okay. Gotcha. But that would have taken more time. And Apple was trying to get that thing out the door. Otherwise clearly it would have had 3G on it to begin with. I don't think it was a marketing plan to gimp the first phone and listen to people complain about slow data. I think it was more of a case of they were in a hurry and just wanted to get it done. Also, the app store didn't even exist at the time. So the need for 3G was not as great.

Having been a Verizon customer for many years before finally coming to my senses a few years back - I have a hard time seeing people have the same "iPhone experience" with Verizon. They are absolutely terrible when it comes to killing phone functionality to promote their added-fee lesser versions of features. As far as I know, they still don't support most basic Bluetooth sync options. How's that going to work? I realize they're the largest, but it seems like this could hurt Apple. People who are with Verizon won't blame the carrier because they're basically clueless - they'll see stuff that doesn't work as expected, and say "What's so great about the iPhone?"

Verizon's ads blow. No way Apple is going to let Verizon do one of their crappy ads with iPhone in hand.

"Can you hear me now?" *barf*

From AT&T's standpoint, I would much rather have exclusivity on a phone that you HAVE to purchase with a 2-year contract, than a tablet with no contract.

Actually, the original agreement expired in 2012. We do not know if that agreement is still in force. We can speculate but no one outside Apple/ATT has facts. We know the expiration date but we don't know any other deets like if there is a "bail out" clause or if Apple re-negotated the entire deal after ATT started to subsidize the phone.

Except during the first generation iPhone there was that little thing called a CONTRACT to AT&T. The evidence is pretty clear that is coming to an end. So, time to start making phones for other carriers!!! It's not unprecedented. Apple sells on more then one carrier in some other countries.

Apple sure does sell on more than one carrier in some countries, but all the carriers sell the same phone! They all use the GSM standard. In the other non-U.S. countries that have both GSM and CDMA networks, they only sell on the GSM networks (i.e. Japan). Whether Apple is willing to make a CDMA and GSM iPhone has nothing to do with an AT&T contract. They could have sold CDMA in other countries if they really felt compelled to.

Also, where has it been made "pretty clear" that the AT&T exclusivity contract is coming to an end now? It hasn't been made clear in either direction.

I'm included to believe this given the recent Engadget story which claims tipsters from all sorts of disciplines are saying it's coming. I, for one, would be happy if there was a mass ATT > Verizon exodus. More network bandwidth for me.
