Concurrent voice/data is a HUGE feature.

Just like I wouldn't buy a car without auto-transmission or power windows, I would not go to a carrier without concurrent voice/data. Once you use it, you rely upon it.

That's crap. I've had the AT&T iPhone, too. Is concurrent voice/date nice? Yes. Is it "essential"? No. Consistent, reliable 3G coverage is a helluva lot more essential than concurrent voice/data.

It's like owning a car that doesn't run whenever the radio is on. You want the radio on, the engine turns off. You want to drive, the radio turns off.

In my case, with AT&T, it's like owning a car that only does more than 5 MPH when I use the "special" gas they sell only in places that I am in 20% of the time.

 I don't understand why so many people stayed with AT&T all this time if the service is so bad? No matter how cool the iPhone is, if it didn't work why keep it? I know people who have had each iPhone since 2007 and constantly complain about AT&T.

I can't explain that one. I tried to like AT&T for the iPhone, but switched to Sprint due to the lack of coverage.

I picked up my VZW 32 GB this morning in Austin. I got there at 10 till 7 and was number 12 in line. I had to go to the Verizon store because it's a business plan with a dedicated rep, I think our rep said they had about 300 phones and no one was in line when I left. I've had every iPhone except the 3GS. My company has always had Verizon so I'm saying goodbye to carrying two phones (Droid 2 and ATT iPhone 4) and having a personal phone bill, which I've been doing since '07. No simultaneous voice and data is a small sacrifice for saving $72 per month.

Ha..really? That's what its like? Your gonna compare a phone that cant surf web and have a phone call at the same time to a car and a radio? Brilliant

It's always been an option (I think), but people still wait in line. Maybe it's for the experience?

I waited in line and did it for two reasons. 1 the experience and 2 because I don't like the anxiety of waiting for the UPS truck. Waiting around all day, ruining a whole day waiting for that truck. I got my AT&T iPhone launch day. Reserved one. Got there early just in case. Was out of the store 20 minutes after it opened with the phone. To me it was the less stressful way of getting it.

It's really not that big a deal.. Like someone said earlier, it's just another iPhone but on a different network.
I am SO getting sick of all this Apple worship...I actually switched phones to Windows Phone 7...and I LOVE it...
Now my iPhone 4 is just sitting in a box in my desk..the chunky girl in the picture will probably drop and break hers first day.

I wish somebody would do that thing where they a product that is sold out on launch day and take it outside where the line is and just break it into a million pieces.

I wish somebody would do THAT..

i rather take a day off for something more usefull

AT&T service is actually very good

I don't understand why so many people bitch and fuss about the rservice on AT&T. It's actually vey good and the customer service (if i ever need to call them) are very friendly as well. Everyone that complains about it just needs something to bitch about..

Signals are great too..sure there are some places where the signal bars drop, but what phone provider's service is 100%? NONE..
Verizon may have more RED on their little map, but here where I live the signal strength is crap. AT&T's is better and is better for when I travel. I don't much care for Verizon and their crappy network that won't let you surf and talk (that has become a staple of the AT&T network...I almost ALWAYS surf the web or do something on the data network while I talk on the phone)..I can't say much for that on Verizon.

I have a feeling that if anyone that is on Verizon's network got a taste of what they can do on the AT&T network with surfing and talking at the same time, they'd drop Verizon SO fast..

For me I've never personally had the need to be on the phone and using the web at the same time. A lot of people can't even walk and text at the same time, not to mention walk, surf the web AND talk...we all knows that makes you trip and fall into mall fountains. :D

I'm just glad to be rid of my BB and finally have an iPhone, 8 months old or not.

Verizon Store in NJ

Just came from a verizon store in NJ , where i was greeted by 30 Employees at the door all wearing red shirts waiting for customers. i happen to get assigned to a sales associate by the front door where all the sales people were hanging out in front waiting. what i overheard was that the sales were going terribly!!! a few of the employees were saying that "They can't believe it" and " where is everyone"....... was this release to late in the game?? ( this is my 1st post..... although i selfishly read the posts here on a nightly basis, so i want to say THANKS!!)

I think when you factor in the pre-orders, this is not unexpected. The people who have wanted this the most, were most likely the people already on Verizon. I would assume that the next couple of months will see steady sales as people cycle through their contracts with other carriers and are able to jump ship without penalties. I would assume some people are waiting to be eligible for an upgrade with Verizon too.

Has anyone answered this question yet?
What are all the people who wait 6 months for the iPhone5 going to do if the iphone 5 does not come out in 6 months? Go ahead and buy iphone 4 at that point? Wait 6 more months? That wait a couple of months theory could turn into a whole year pretty quickly I think.

I am really surprised, but I have read this a lot. I use the feature pretty often. I'm on the phone with family and friends but away from my home or office (which is the point of a mobile phone, being able to talk on the phone without a "land-line" nearby) and we want to make plans. Since I have what is basically a tiny laptop in my phone, I may want to look something up on the internet while away from my real computers and away from a Wi-Fi hot spot that I am familiar with. Sure I could just try to find one nearby (and probably could without too much effort) but I am paying for data service on my iPhone, why not use it?

Steve Job's demo of the original iPhone included this feature. He was using the iPod, got a call from Phil Schiller and he looked up movie times or a restaurant location (or both, I don't remember) and then ended the call and the song he was listening to started back up where he left off. I think he did that on Wi-Fi but that same situation could happen while your out and about without your computer or Wi-Fi.

And when I use that feature, I'm usually in my car parked somewhere not walking into a fountain:D.

It's not a deal breaker, and if you are in an area with bad AT&T service (NYC) then having a better phone experience is much more valuable than being able to use mobile data and talk at once (which I can't imagine happens very much for anyone. I do it maybe once every few months, but when I am able to I really appreciate it! I don't have an iPad but I wouldn't want to have to break out a laptop or iPad to look something up just because I am on a call, but I would if I had to.)

Sales are going terribly? Maybe this week...but not last week. Broke Verizon's all time record for launch of a phone. Like was stated above, most who likely wanted this phone were Verizon customers and pre-ordered last week and got their phones on Monday.

I've had the iPhone since 2008. I can count on my hands the times I've used it without having wifi available.

But everyone's mileage will vary. If it's important, stick to GSM.

So excited to be offloading the whiners from AT&T. Good riddance. My service is excellent, always is, and always has been. Makes no difference where I travel in the U.S. Listening to people regurgitating hyped up nonsense about AT&T, for no reason other than immature angst, has gotten horribly old.

Good Riddance. Enjoy making and paying for phone calls on your $100 a month iDevice. I'll continue using it for what its actually good at.

Well, get a job, and things might be different. I have an absolute 100% need of this feature every single day, and have for 4 years.

I can't understand it. I was at my local Apple store last night to pick up an extra charger for the Verizon phone I received on Monday. Not a single person was in line when the store closed at 8:00 PM. Maybe it had to due to the fact that the temperatures in the Chicago areas, hit -6 degrees last night.
