I don't really think so. CDMA and GSM are different technology. It would be like hack a walkie talkie to connect to a mobile phone - I guess.

I thought they were making something that was compatible with both CDMA and GSM... So if not, then does that mean that the V iPhone is non-resellable?

Just amazing.

1 - Same questions get asked over and over.

2 - How many times do people have to say "I told you so about Verizon and iphone". Get over it.

3 - CDMA radio inside the phone - and people want to use it somewhere without CDMA. Think people, think.

4 - Statement of the day - "AT&T is only in it for the money". Do you think they are in this for some feel good reason? Of course they are in it for the money. Duh!

The agony of all of this is amazing.

Q: Did you change the antenna?
A: Cook: We've optimized things to work on CDMA, but I'm not commenting on anything beyond that.

i get the feeling there's something were not being told about the new antenna.

i get the need to readjust to cmda, but did they need to redesign it

they probably didn't redesign it in the sense of 'secretly fixing the great big design flaw' because there wasnt one. But folks will read into any changes as being that kind of fix

That said, Cook should have left off the second half of the comment as it is defensive and is going to make folks think there is a secret fix that ATT users are being shafted on.

I watched the leak video a few days ago, and although the break points are the same as the Verizon iPhone released today, there was also a SIM card slot that they emphasized was in the same position as the current iPhone.

This would mean that although similar to what was released today, the leak is probably the next GSM iPhone. Which leads some suspicion to Tim Cook saying the break points are due to the CDMA network (not antenna gate).

Very good point, i watched the video has well but i havent associated the lack of SIM on the verizon one, so this probably confirms that this is a new antenna design and not just CMDA the extra breaks probably attenuate the grip of death effect ?

Dear AT&T,

Allow the Personal WiFi hotspot (tethering) at either no cost, or a minimal one time fee...now please.
Why?
Even Verizon charges $15 per month on top of your data plan fee if you want to use your device as a mobile hot spot.
Why would AT&T make it free?

Yes, no one realistically thought that it'd be THAT huge. Wait for iPhone 5 and you'll get that. As Tim Cook said, they wanted to get in on Verizon ASAP because people kept asking for it NOW.

Do you really think the Verizon iPhone 5 will be LTE?

I thought it would also be CDMA.

I wonder if the iPhone will become data-only w/VOIP when LTE rolls out. I mean, the separation of voice and data needs to eventually end when the technology and the bandwidth is there. The question is, who will do it first?

I'm not holding my breath for this to happen anytime soon. Voice is the vinyl of the future...

I reset my usage and went on a road trip, if I'm not totally mistaken it used a couple of MB, maybe for determining my location?

No, that still wouldnt use data. I dont even have a sim chip in my iPhone 4.. i use it for navigation and an iPod at this point. Navigation doesnt require ANY data, thats the whole point of having the maps on the phone.

Well Verizon is a big network, why couldn't you sell it? I mean, if you saying outside the US there are other country like China that uses CDMA, but there aren't many networks using this technology.

welcome to macrumors where iphone users are never satisfied.. I dont get what everyone is complaining about.. Is it the fact that the iphone is going to verizon? or the mobile wifi? at home on wifi i can answer phone calls, and surf the web.. It's not a big deal....

So all you guys are going to break your contracts and pay hefty termination fees? Not worth it, but you will be sure the next iteration of Iphone after my contract is over will be mine on Verizon.

What GPS app are you using?
The built in Map app requires data since it doesn't store the maps locally.

what's wrong with att

had phones on other networks, att works great, some problems like occasionally dropped calls or lack of service in some areas are problems inherent with cell phones, all cell phones. Love my Iphone and ATT

Some things never change

What was the first thing Verizon did to the iPhone?

They crippled it. No concurrent voice/data (on top of a slower network). My current iPhone 4 is (according to latest ITU definitions of 4G) 4G-HSPA+.

I expect the nickel & diming to come next.

I think I will just stay with AT&T. I hope with the new competition, pricing will come down or at least get free tethering. I'm happy enough with the service in my area.

Every nav app on the phone does NOT use data... google maps and att navigation are the 2 exceptions.

TomTom, Navigon, iGo, etc do NOT use data.

Just don't plan on making/receiving calls during critical downloads. I'd hate to begin a 100 mb file transfer, have it stopped (via a voice call) and then start over again....there goes all my megabytes!

I'll have to test that, but I don't think I've ever had that happen. The data flow usually just pauses until your voice call ends, then it starts up again. I suspect it depends on if the downloading app has its own timeout timer.

A WiFi hotspot sounds good until you have to disconnect to make or receive a call. No thanks!

Still better than nothing. Imagine two couples, with iPhone owning husbands and wives with WiFi tablets.

Wife 1: Honey, can you turn on your Verizon hotspot?
Husband 1: Sure, but if a call comes in, you'll have to wait, okay?
Wife 1: Sure.

Wife 2: Honey, can you turn on your ATT hotspot for me, too?
Husband 2: Uh, no.
Wife 2: But you're not talking, and you've said that your data works even if you are on the phone. So turn it on!
Husband 2: Uh, I can't.
Wife 2: You SOB. Why not?
Husband 3: My iPhone doesn't come with a free hotspot.
Wife 2: Grrrr
.

Wife 1: I love you, baby.

PS. Yeah yeah, I know about jailbreaking.

The antenna concept used is the same, there is no secret fix. The antenna is out the shell and is more sensible than other that are in the shell, that is all.
