How do apps like Pandora work if there is no simultaneous voice and data?

If you're listening to Pandora, are you able to receive SMS and phone calls?

Typically the music will stop and the phone call or SMS will come through. I believe the network/phone is structured in such a way that they hold precedence over the other data being transmitted. I'm not 100 percent sure though, I've never had an issue while using Pandora on my Incredible with missing SMS or calls. I know I have been running with Pandora and Runkeeper on and gotten SMS notifications that came through, if not a phone call.

The real AT&T advantage though is that CDMA limitation of voice and data. People play it down, but I use that feature constantly, searching for a restaurant while talking, checking game scores, etc. That is the ultimate "multi-task", not whether I can play Missile Command while editing a photo.

The only thing in this event that I, as a non-american iphone user, care about is whether or not this wifi tethering is coming to the regular iPhone 4, or if apple is going to make the rest of the world stick with bluetooth so that Verizon can compete with AT&T?

That is how it should work. Data has the lower priority but can't count how many times that didn't happen for me. I would just get the new voice mail notification out of the blue.

Incoming calls and SMS would suspend the Pandora stream. Presumably, push notifications and e-mails would also have the same effect.

Verizon iPhone users will have a different ownership experience than iPhone users on other carriers due to limitations of the CDMA network.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

Verizon network is much better than AT&T in the US
5-device hotspot

Cons:

No simultaneous voice/data
No roaming in GSM countries

For me the cons are a deal breaker. Might not be the case for others. I see this as more of a threat to Android than to AT&T's iPhone.

Looks like the Verizon iPhone has a newer firmware version (4.2.5) which has the Personal Hotspot built into the firmware! I see an update coming for ATT users

Text & Talk

Does the CDMA network not allow being on a voice call and texting at the same time? In other words, is texting data driven and therefore will not work with voice?

But sadly it is still operating as a CDMA device :( No voice and data at the same time.

I was really hoping they would have fixed this by now.

The technology exists for CDMA, just that there aren't phones that utilize the radio.

In the end, it's not really as big a deal as people make it out to be in my opinion, I've never had an issue where I couldn't get online or something while on a call that really was a situation where it impacted me. I think people just use it as a ridiculous argument personally.

Ok folks did my research here is the off contract pricing if you are not eligible 16GB $599.00 32GB $699.00 OUCH! Very surprised they didnt go the ATT route and make everyone eligible right off the bat.

Texts will still go through, they utilize the low-level communications between the phone and the towers to transmit. Hence the 160 character limit.

Apples Big Lie Revealed...

Nothing wrong with the original iPhone 4 antenna?
What a con job.

Verizon could see right through Apple and demanded a better antenna.

Apple will lie AGAIN and say it's because CDMA requires a "different antenna"

One fact remains, Apple are world class liars, and smart enough to be sure they didn't screw up the Verizon phone.

THE biggest non-event this year ... But it's still early in 2011.
This has been brewing for months. And I already have Mifi which I downloaded from Cydia.

no, the biggest non-event this year was the beatles announcement. that was such a disappointment.

Good Option, But No Simultaneous Voice/Data Bites

Just a thought, but the iPhone is such a data-centric device that users tend to use it more for mobile data than anything else. With that said, what good is the Verizon network for calls if I can't get through to you because you're surfing the net, using mobile hotspot, or downloading data throughout the day?

Uh wait for iPhone 5

Why buy the iPhone 4 CDMA when its clear by their lack of answering the yearly cycle question that the iPhone 5 will be both GSM and CDMA ( I think there was a rumor BI-chipset already)

ATT will probably allow MiFi on the iPhone 5, why? because thats what they did with teather. only 3GS + can teather. Sell more Phones, you have to upgrade for new features.

Driod has taken a huge blow today, I guess I can focus on iOS apps now and scrap the driod plans.

I'm glad for the competition and the millions more people that will by apps while not talking on their VZ iPhones. :)

they are trying to avoid cannibalizing current phones. Early upgrades would do that. Their biggest target is pulling new customers from AT&T.
