To me it is a big deal. There are MANY times where I'm on a call and have to look something up on the net. Also like I said I have had problems where voice wasn't the priority. Now no it won't be a issue for most but this is one of the main reasons I went with GSM.

I get that, for people that actually use it, it's a big deal. But I think the proportion of people that it actually impacts is going to be higher here than it is in the real world. I just think people make it out to be this huge problem and deficiency in Verizon's network when it really isn't.

The technology exists for CDMA, just that there aren't phones that utilize the radio.

In the end, it's not really as big a deal as people make it out to be in my opinion, I've never had an issue where I couldn't get online or something while on a call that really was a situation where it impacted me. I think people just use it as a ridiculous argument personally.

Actually, it's a big deal to me. We use VoIP applications for work. So, we get calls over data and voice quite often. And, we have a ton of customers that use this feature today.

That being said, the majority of users may not notice.

Q: Did you change the antenna?
A: Cook: We've optimized things to work on CDMA, but I'm not commenting on anything beyond that.

i get the feeling there's something were not being told about the new antenna.

i get the need to readjust to cmda, but did they need to redesign it ?

i feel like there hushing up the fact that they've just implemented a new antenna, time will tell if non verizon iphones start rolling out with this antenna design.

Also, its gonna suck that apple is not gonna give older iphone 4's any antenna support if this new design is a better one.

if they were, theyd have mentioned it by now.

Also firmware 4.2.5 ... wonder what the implication will be for the JB community

Antennagate was 5-6 months ago. I think the hardware was pretty much finalized at that point. They aren't going to be able to redesign a phone in 6 months unless it was some overly glaring flaw with an easy manufacturing fix. If anything, I'd expect major changes in the iPhone 5.

Question

The hotspot is so full of win; aside from missing calls when in use. I wonder if ATT will answer?

I don't know how this works. I get you can't have data and voice at the same time but would you miss the call and stay on data or do you get kicked from data when a call comes in?

So....... this is all well and good except for the fact that if the antenna design we saw earlier is accurate none of the existing iPhone 4 cases will work because the buttons are in a different place...

Also the calls while data thing reminds me of dial up. Haha :p

From the Verizon FAQ page:

Will any Verizon Wireless apps be available on iPhone?

iPhone will have the 3G Mobile Hotspot app pre-installed, and it will also have other popular apps available in the market such as VZ Navigator, and V CAST Media Manager.

lol @ all the people that said "it would never happen"

Who will be hitting refresh on verizonwireless.com constantly come Feb 3rd?

Wonder if this included mobile hotspot-ness will filter to Verizon's Droid devices or if it's just a ploy to draw people from AT&T.

I have an Android phone on Verizon but had iPhone 3GS before on AT&T. Simultaneous voice and data are the biggest issue with the Verizon network (and Sprint). Trust me, I use it daily.

Not everything will recover gracefully if the data connection is ripped apart by a phone call. Worst is (which may not be a problem for iPhone) when you're downloading large files and it gets interrupted and you have to start over. Also no way to check something while you're on the phone with someone.

It WILL bother you, especially if you're used to GSM. Enjoy.

AKA Verizon cripples CDMA iPhone with limitation of no voice and data.

I thought that was just a characteristic of the CDMA chip, not a deliberate act by Verizon. In my area, Verizon service is notably more reliable, making this a tough choice.

Not sure if this has been asked or answered....but since you cant use the phone and the internet at the same time...Say you are using the hotspot from ur vzw iPhone with ur MacBook Pro and then you get a phone call on the iPhone....do you get kicked off the internet on the MacBook (or any other device wireless connected to the hotspot)? Anyone know FOR SURE and no one that is just saying something just to answer the question....

Curious is we can apply the $100 for the "new every two" to this deal? Would be sick to a 32GB for $199!!

yesss

Will existing customers be able to redeem their New Every Two credit?

Yes, existing customers will be able to take advantage of their New Every Two credit if eligible, and use it towards the purchase of iPhone (may not be available at all agent locations).

MacRumor users told me that there wouldn't be an iPhone on Verizon :confused:

Steve Jobs said there would never be an iPhone on Verizon.

When Steve Jobs says there would never be an iPhone on Verizon, that means there will never be an iPhone on Verizon.

Until Steve Jobs changes his mind :D

I don't know how this works. I get you can't have data and voice at the same time but would you miss the call and stay on data or do you get kicked from data when a call comes in?

I think voice has priority. So if you get a call or start a call, no data will be flowing. How well the iPhone behaves in that situation depends on Apple. If it is done well, then applications will just notice that sending data takes unusually long, and no new data arrives. Apps might have timeouts. Let's say Safari on your Mac contacts a server, and doesn't get a reply. After 60 seconds Safari will assume that the server is not there. If Apple is clever, then Safari on the iPhone would know that 60 seconds without receiving data while the user is making a phone call is absolutely normal and doesn't mean there is anything wrong with the server, so there should be no error message.

Welcome future Verizon iPhone users to your once a year upgrade (although there might be two this year, who knows, does Apple really need to do an iPhone refresh?).

CDMA may not be the fastest technology, but it's all you need until Apple decides you need to more.

If you do need speed, you now have the choice to jump ships to AT&T...

But sadly it is still operating as a CDMA device :( No voice and data at the same time.

I was really hoping they would have fixed this by now.

Apples target customer doesn't know the difference. Apple doesn't care, so you have the ideal mass market cell phone.
