I suspect this is because AT&T isn't that bad in *most* areas. In dense urban cities like Chicago and New York, AT&T is pretty bad. But in many other areas, like Miami for instance, AT&T is fine and actually faster than Verizon in many areas.

I'm an AT&T user, but hate both companies. Trading one devil for another isn't worth it right now, especially since AT&T works mostly fine here in South FL.

So, in a survey of a whole five stores, Verizon sold more in its first five days than AT&T did. Is that right or am I misreading something? If so what's the problem?

The problem is that this was the Verizon iPhone Kickoff period where the experts said "millions will defect to Verizon". It isn't happening. In fact, even during this huge kickoff, AT&T sales were about 80% of Verizon's....and getting better each day.

I could sell my iPhone 4 for most of what it would cost to break my contract and buy a new iPhone 4...

After last night I've had it with AT&T and so that's exactly what we're doing later today.

My wife is going with another iPhone on VZ. As for me, I'm trying out the Optimus V on Virgin Mobile. $30 a month for unlimited data/text and 300 minutes with no contract is something I just have to explore.

So Apple will probably sell between 1 - 2 million iPhones in the first month of availability on Verizon. This is for a product that is about 8 months old, and will most likely be replaced by a newer product in just a few months.

I bet most other phone manufactures would love to have "disappointing" sales numbers like this.

I think for a lot of people, especially those not in the highly congested areas (NYC, LA, SF, etc...), AT&T works as well if not better than Verizon. I live in the Midwest, and Verizon is pretty spotty here. Compare that with AT&T which offers complete 3G coverage in my area. I figure the media coverage made it seem like there existed a lot more people that hated AT&T. I have no major complaints (although there is a killer dead zone in the student center at my college).

I'm not sure how 25% aggregate higher sales figures constitutes "barely". Also worth pointing out it means Apple is more than doubling its U.S. sales. I'm pretty sure most mobile manufacturer's would love to double their sales simply by adding an additional carrier.

I dont see why people are suprised more people arent buying a 7 month old phone. My verizon contract has been up since November (I have the droid and i paid an extra $100 to only have a 1 yr commitment, so i could get the iphone if it came out)

As much as I want the iPhone, I'm not going to be stuck with that old of a phone for 1.5-2 more years. I'm waiting the 4 months for a new one.

A select number of Apple stores doesn't really tell you the impact of how the iPhone is selling on AT&T and Verizon. This doesn't count sales numbers from Verizon stores and AT&T stores.

Also, I got my phone at a rural Verizon store because there is not an Apple store within 100 miles of me. Think about that as well.

This comparison is the dumbest ever.

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of potential Verizon customers are waiting until June to see if the iPhone 5 merges both phones.

BINGO! :D

Also, why would an AT&T customer with iPhone 4 switch to Verizon? The gains would be minimal. Wait until iPhone 5 comes out and then you should see an exodus from AT&T to Verizon.

Exactly. I would say that 100% of Verizon folks that have been WAITING for the iPhone 4 know that it's already 9+ months old...and that very likely a new iPhone 5 will be out before June. So why sign up for a contract now? I'm not switching till the 5 comes out....and if that is 12+ months after ATT gets it then I will stay with ATT (I have the 3GS) if I really want the 5 that badly.

For the people that have NOT been anxiously waiting, they too are probably fairly educated to guess that a new iPhone 5 is right around the corner so waiting 2-3 months is no big deal.

And speaking of waiting...let all the early adopters (of Verizon) find the problems, bugs, bad reviews, etc.

I know I'm waiting for the next iPhone to come out so I can get an iphone 4 for $99 on verizon.

Despite hardware updates, and iOS 4 (minor improvements IMHO), the iPhone hasn't changed much since 2007. Don't believe me? Look up "original Apple iPhone" on YouTube... So more power to you I guess.

Not saying you shouldn't wait, its just that I highly doubt you will be any more satisfied.

If you're the type that HAS to wait, then you WON'T be satisfied in my opinion.

Verizon's forcing everyone in to a $30 data plan did not help their sales. Some of us are around wifi most of the time and have no need for an unlimited data plan. I've been happily living with AT&T's $15 200MB plan since it became available and will not consider moving Verizon when my contract is up this summer unless I can get a $15 plan from them as well.

Maybe, just maybe, customers are smart. Maybe people realize that Verizon's CDMA network has crippled the iPhone (lack of speed, lack of concurrent voice/data, lack of global coverage, lack of "real" conference call ability and management (no drop, no swap, no more than 2 calls)).

Not really enough data to make any valid conclusion.

Closest AT&T and Apple stores are both about 2 miles away from my house. That said I just go to Apple.

At work though it's an AT&T store right across the street and closest Apple store probably 10 miles.

Unless off or weekend I'd just go to whichever store was closest that I could get out of fastest. I'm sure Verizon stores are more frequent than Apple stores for most.

Maybe my maths is just crap, but the way I read those numbers is that if only the AT&T phone was available, 3009 would have been sold. With the Verizon iPhone also available, the total sales were 7001.

That's 4000 additional phones sold over what would have been sold otherwise - more than double.

This is less than good, how ?

At some point, I say there's only so much people who can buy an iPhone...
I mean, people won't buy a second or third iPhone, especially if they know the 5 is coming sometime this year... The rest is pretty much a carrier/contract matter...

What this means is, when the iPhone 5 does come out in the US.... there will be lines! :D

I'm actually surprised that Apple and Verzion thought there was going to be huge lines on launch day. It didn't even cross my mind until it was mentioned.

Also... interesting to see 30% of Android users and 20% of BB users coming over to the Apple side. :D

People really thought everyone would leave ATT for VZW...

i wonder why verizon was so eager to jump on the 4 so bad? i'm sure they were aware of a common yearly refresh coming 6 months down the road.

..unless maybe the 4 is all verizon is getting for now?

Who buys their Apple gear in the actual stores?

Although it could end up looking the same, I would be more interested in seeing the online sales figures.
