What?!

This is so frustrating. You should pay for the data. That's a tangible product you can understand paying money for. The more bandwidth you use, the more expensive your plan should be. But charging someone for a feature that does, in no way, really tax the network differently, is B.S.

Plain and simple, charging extra for tethering is abusive. It should not be tolerated.

How can apple even let Verizon sell the iphone with this type of network. I've had an Iphone since September of 2007, i had the 1st gen & now the iphone4. Let me tell you you will use voice & data concurently all the time. You know how many times during a call someone has asked me "did you get my email" or "what time is ______ open till" or "what movies are playing tonight"...........

Seriously i live in Central NJ, i've had AT&T since it was cellular one in 98'. Go with the AT&T iPhone, theres nothing smart about a smartphone that can't do voice & data. For me that's the end of the discussion right there. Both plans are gonna cost you around a $100 month, both networks will give you pretty good call quality. If i have 2 dropped calls a month thats alot & usually its in places where cell signal is limited across carriers. I can't think of 1 tangible benefit that Verizon has over AT&T other than this alleged superior network that in my experience is a total myth.

By a CDMA iphone with verizon so that what your either stuck with CDMA or you dish probably $400 next year to upgrade to the LTE version? Because you won't be eligible for upgrade pricing till what Feb of 2013???

I'm an apple fanboy, for me its about the phone not the carrier, but if you go with verizon your making a mistake. MA Bell isn't exactly cutting edge.......

Or you take advantage of something that only Verizon, of the majors, offers on phones a one year contract. It has not been shown if they will do it for the iPhone but they have for every other phone on the network. For $70 more you can sign a one year contract. And if the iPhone gets LTE either this year, which I highly doubt, or next year you will be off contract and ready to buy. And if you are lucky enough to live in one of the LTE areas I would think the iPhone would be your last choice since you almost know it will not be LTE ready until 2012.

And to those thinking it would or should be free. That is the entitlement attitude that many hate about apple users. Why should the iPhone get something that almost every other phone on the network pays for.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss..... I'll happily stick with AT&T.

I was with Verizon wireless before the 1st iPhone came out in 2007 and hated them because of their billing practices. I've been much more satisfied with AT&T even with the network coverage disparities. :apple:

Verizon's plan is better...unlimited data with 2GB's specifically for wifi hotspot...I can't switch to big red though....this will finally cause me to Jail break if AT&T does not offer a comparable plan. I will never give up my grandfathered unlimited data plan

Then you shouldn't have asked what the difference between AT&T's iPhone and Verizon's iPhone is. If that's not what you wanted to know then you should've made the question more specific. All I can do is answer the questions you ask, not the ones you wanted to ask.

You know what your right.... I'll make it easier for everyone!

Here's why the AT&T iPhone is superior to Verizons:

1. It's actually a smart phone, you can do data & voice at the same time
2. AT&T's network dealt with the most data intensive device the worlds ever seen for 4 years now, i'm confident in there ability to continue. Verizon... Maybe?
3. You can use it in other countries than the US & China.... (and a small handfull of insignifigant ones)
4. There 3g network is way faster to the likes of twice as fast. http://www.pcworld.com/article/1895...rlds_second_3g_wireless_performance_test.html
5. It uses a sim card like the rest of the world, so you can take it out put it in your new iphone (after you lost/broke/etc), restore your backup & go.
6. Did i mention the simultaneous data/voice thing.... thats kinda important.
7. You can buy one right now!
8. ***** you can buy the 3GS for 50 bucks

Verizon pays attention, and they're fast learners.

They have noticed that true Apple lovers, happily pay Apple tax, Verizon tax & still have big cheesy smiles on their faces. :)

7. Verizon is just getting the iPhone 4.

8. Were talking about the iPhone 4 right? Cant compare an Apple to a Cabbage.

I don't get why you guys are charged for tethering and now for mobile hot spots. It's your data you should be able to use it how you wish. Be it through tethering or hot spot.

They really screwed over American users with the iPhone

1) AT&T charges $20 to tether one device and gives you no extra bandwidth, Verizon charges the same $20 for 5 devices and gives you an extra 2GB for your money.

2) If you have an iPad, the AT&T data plan is $25 for 2GB. With a Verizon iPhone, $20 lets you tether your (less expensive) WiFi iPad and get the same 2GB for $5 less.

How is it that everyone thinks this announcement is a bad thing? AT&T will have to change their plans to keep up. Competition is a good thing.

So the Verizon website isnt good enough? Just like Activision charging for online gameplay. You fools will believe anything a blog says.

Heres my blog...

Today I spoke with Verizon Wireless CFO John Killian. During the interview he stated that, "We [Verizon Wireless] will be giving free upgrades to anyone who purchases the iPhone 4 between the release on our network [Verizon Wireless] and the release of the iPhone 5 on our network [Verizon Wireless]."

Eat it up.

Is this serious?
Your right BGR made it up, there just a fly by night blogger... Here's the exact same made up quote from other bloggers who make stuff up.

Dude your arguments are so factuly weak. All of those points and thats your rebuttal.

Game set match, take you and the horse you rode in on to Verizon. (4 years late to the party)

Why do you need extra bandwidth if its unlimited...

Wow..so now there are Apple+VZ fanboys vs Apple+ATT fanboys! Way to go...

It's always been like that ever since the small minority of Verizon fanboys started making noise.

I tend to like companies that provide exactly what I need, like AT&T. However, I am not blinded by them. I will rant on them about their idiocies; example AT&T's dropping of unlimited plans instead of just offering two middle plans [I could go on and on].

However, when someone is ranting and spouting crap against the company I know provides best for me, I will just correct or defend in whatever wrong claims there are. I won't blindly defend. That said, since all the Verizon fanboys having been raving on how Verizon is the greatest thing since sliced bread and AT&T is the devil, well I say it's my turn to make noise. Here is round 2, round 1 already being the fact that Verizon has the slow network and can't do voice/data simultaneously.

Well, there goes my hopes of free tethering.

I should have figured, it is Verizon we are talking about here.

Now I am just hoping enough iPhone users jump ship from AT&T that they will reduce their tethering charges.

And i'm just hoping enough iPhone users jump ship from AT&T that I'll finally be able to make a damn phone call in Grand Central Terminal...

i dont get it either. and how do they even prevent users from tethering without paying anyways? do apple release different ios versions for the US? on my iphone, all i have to do is turn hotspot on and its up and running? cant americans just do the same?

Why dont you answer the questions if they are so weak?

I will, see below

5. So what happens when you lose the phone with the sim card in it?

7. Verizon is just getting the iPhone 4.

8. Were talking about the iPhone 4 right? Cant compare an Apple to a Cabbage.

A. You get a new SIM card. Is that so hard? Many people have back-ups of contacts.

B. But they don't have it yet.

C. The iPhone 3GS has been proven to have the same performance as the iPhone 4. Gizmodo, Engadget and others have done demonstrations and articles on how both of them are on-par with each other. The only thing over the iPhone 3GS, is HSUPA, 5MP, Facetime, 512MB RAM and Gyroscope. Other than that, performance wise, both are exactly the same and run the same dam iPhone OS.

So this is more of a Red Apples vs Green Apples comparison.

Your move chuckles.

You know what your right.... I'll make it easier for everyone!

Here's why the AT&T iPhone is superior to Verizons:

For you and maybe some other people as well, you mean. AT&T isn't for, I dunno, people who live in areas not covered by them?

1. It's actually a smart phone, you can do data & voice at the same time

I've had a Droid Eris for a year now. I have never once used data and voice at the same time. And if I do need to, then I have an excuse to hang up so I can browse the web without someone yapping at me at the same time. I kinda like that.

2. AT&T's network dealt with the most data intensive device the worlds ever seen for 4 years now, i'm confident in there ability to continue. Verizon... Maybe?

Yes, it has. We'll see how Verizon fares, it's still too early to call.

3. You can use it in other countries than the US & China.... (and a small handfull of insignifigant ones)

Fair nuff. Though of course people who don't travel abroad much won't care.

4. There 3g network is way faster to the likes of twice as fast. http://www.pcworld.com/article/1895...rlds_second_3g_wireless_performance_test.html

Still doesn't matter for people who don't get ATT coverage.

5. It uses a sim card like the rest of the world, so you can take it out put it in your new iphone (after you lost/broke/etc), restore your backup & go.

I think the better solution is what I do, not losing or breaking my stuff. But for breaking it, yes, that's true. Lost or stolen, you have no advantage with ATT over VZW.

6. Did i mention the simultaneous data/voice thing.... thats kinda important.

Yes, you did, and no, it isn't (at least not important enough to mention twice IMHO).

7. You can buy one right now!

I have this great thing called patience that enables me to be able to wait another two weeks. Unfortunately, it seems few people have that ability these days (such as people who bought Wifi iPads and then a month later bought the 3G. Seriously? You lived without it all this time, now suddenly you can't?)

8. ***** you can buy the 3GS for 50 bucks

Yes, but if you're looking at a phone in the $50 range, there are tons of Android models that are much better than the 3GS that can be had.

Point is, ATT is better for some, Verizon is better for others. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Use what's best for you. Not even sure why people care what network others use.

Yeay!

Internet from my phone for my laptop or other wifi device! SO very useful!!
Now we can stream movies and show from youtube, hulu and netfl- *ring-ring* (Connection disabled...incoming call)

Yeah... no thanks Verizon. I'll stick with AT&T.
Anyone can say their network is more reliable ...when it only allows uses to do ONE thing at a time.

Does anyone know whether or not AT&T requires subscribers to commit to keeping tethering on their monthly plan for a certain amount of time (for example, 1 year)? Or can you just add tethering to your plan whenever you want and cancel it at any time?

For you and maybe some other people as well, you mean. AT&T isn't for, I dunno, people who live in areas not covered by them?

Oh this is fun! I'll play as well!

I've had a Droid Eris for a year now. I have never once used data and voice at the same time. And if I do need to, then I have an excuse to hang up so I can browse the web without someone yapping at me at the same time.

And? We have more users here that use the feature than you'd think. Also, if you need an excuse to hang up, you are bad communicator. Just say, hey you know what, I'll hang up now because of XYZ reason.

Also, This feature is the best since like Apple's ads put it, you can do stuff like order, place a reservation, check your email for an office thing, etc etc...

Many of us need the feature....

Yes, it has, barely. We'll see how Verizon fares, it's still too early to call.

Yes, Verizon's network will do fine when they allow you to just do ONE THING AT A TIME. Anyone can do fine with just one thing. Also, AT&T has had the iPhone for 4 years and has been gathering their experience since then and know how to deal with it.

Verizon only has a pitiful amount of experience on that front. Only what they hear from the news or guess at.

Fair nuff. Though of course people who don't travel abroad much won't care.

How would you know? Just because those people don't travel doesn't mean the phone won't? Ever heard of eBay or reselling an iPhone to buy the next one? A GSM model will most definitely be worth more. A CDMA model, people will dismiss it and laugh at it.

Still doesn't matter for people who don't get ATT coverage.

But it does for those of us who DO HAVE IT. And that's around 92% of all Americans. Cows don't count.

I think the better solution is what I do, not losing or breaking my stuff. But yes, that's true.

Not everyone is as perfect as you are and don't have accidents that end up with phones broken. I cna give you more examples on loosing stuff, but you get the picture from the first one.

Yes, you did, and no, it isn't (at least not important enough to mention twice IMHO).

Yes he did, and yes it is important to A LOT of people.

I have this great thing called patience that enables me to be able to wait another two weeks. Unfortunately, it seems few people have that ability these days (such as people who bought Wifi iPads and then a month later bought the 3G. Seriously? You lived without it all this time, now suddenly you can't?)

And who are you to tell people what they can or can't buy or when and where? If people want an iPhone now, they'll get the iPhone now and only AT&T has it. u jelly?

Yes, but if you're looking at a phone in the $50 range, there are tons of Android models that are much better than the 3GS that can be had.

Point is, ATT is better for some, Verizon is better for others. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Use what's best for you. Not even sure why people care what network others use.

Hardly, the 3GS is almost identical in performance to the iPhone 4. Also, the iPhone OS is so much mature than any Android OS thus far and not to mention the incredible fragmentation it has.

So, why are you responding to his points when his points are made out to expose his experience with AT&T and bash him for exposing what he wants in a phone? Why? Clearly AT&T and the the AT&T iPhone provide him with what he needs. You sound jelly, mad...

Does anyone know whether or not AT&T requires subscribers to commit to keeping tethering on their monthly plan for a certain amount of time (for example, 1 year)? Or can you just add tethering to your plan whenever you want and cancel it at any time?

Tethering is like any texting plan, you can add it, remove it whenever you want.

I have never once used data and voice at the same time. And if I do need to, then I have an excuse to hang up so I can browse the web without someone yapping at me at the same time.
Except that you can't block the person from calling you back...

GPS in-car turn-by-turn app (especially one that exclusively uses the data connection to access non-native(online) maps, such at the free MapQuest app)
+
Unexpected unblockable incoming call
=
Dangerous driving and pissed off users.

Besides, it's VERY common to want to call or text the people at your destination for additional location instructions/description or ETA.

You personally may not have had much experience with this, but once the iPhone is on Verizon, MANY people will understand the shortcomings of not being able to do multiple things at the same time.

I don't expect you to understand though as until you've actually tried parallel data/voice use on a smartphone it's hard to fully understand the necessity.
It's like explaining multi-tasking to a computer user who exclusively uses DOS.
