I use voice and data together all the time. Speaker phone with long-distance folks while surfing, checking email etc. I bet this will be heavily featured on upcoming AT&T ads.

I agree. I have one particular example where I was in DC on the GW parkway and my wife was back home in Ohio. She needed help with directions and a hotel rental. I pulled the car to the side of the road and from my iPhone I was on the call with her while making a hotel reservation and then giving her directions to the hotel.

I think more people use the voice and data at the same time then we really know.

Every single day, I get a call from someone at work who has just sent me an email and wants to discuss it. I can't imagine having to say "Let me download it then I'll call you back".

On personal calls, I can't imagine not being able to do something like look up show times for a movie or any of the tons of other things I do. I don't think most iPhone users realize how much they use the feature. They'll notice when it's not there.

This single issue will keep me on AT&T until Verizon has a solution. Previously in forums, multiple posters have claimed their network can do it, there's just some new CDMA chip you have to use that no one has used yet. The summary of this story makes it sound like it's the network again. Who is right?

To be honest, I'm quite the data junkie using a Droid and I can say that I have needed that feature maybe once or twice in a year, but really, I don't think most people will notice or need it for most everyday situations, at least I haven't anyways.

Then that is not unlimited then.. It dose not matter how they definition unlimited.. If there is a cap or a limit then it is not unlimited.. Here we call that fault advertisement and breaking the law.. So you can sue for fault advertisement..

you mean false?

I can't wait till everyone leaves at&t and stops straining my network! :D

Agreed, although I don't think we'll see the mass exodus that some are expecting.

Also, hasn't anyone learned from prior keynotes that anything involving Apple has something that goes against what people want? Something today is going to come out of the announcement and piss a lot of people off...

I tried to read all posts before replying, but every time I got through a page, there were 2 new pages added. This thread is moving quickly.. so sorry if some of this has been said in the past 5 mins since I stopped reading.

I have been thinking all morning about what to think/predict. The fact that it is not an apple event says alot. Let's start with that.

IF THIS WERE AN APPLE EVENT.. there would have to be something game changing even beyond the reality-distorting aspect of any random apple event. bringing what everyone expects - a verizon/CDMA capable iphone 4 to market - just isnt worthwhile enough. But if there WERE something worthy, what would it be related to a phone? Literally I cant think of anything.

SINCE IT IS A VERIZON EVENT - Bringing the phone alone is big news for them. I would expect it to have some similar elements as apple/Steve does: show the market share changes, show consumer preferences, sales, etc. Show why its needed on top of all the 100s of phones VZW already sells.

But for Steve to show up there should be / must be something extra valuable for him to show up and say. My guess is that it has something to do with using data and voice at the same time. Apple wouldnt have gone down this path to build a "software crippled phone" as compared to its regular ATT cousin. Its not like Apple. If VZW didnt have something big, short-term, planned (including to announce it works like this as of today) I dont see why Apple would bother. They've had so many disappointments with ATT, from coverage to data privacy issues, to data plans, to tethering that all else equal I think they'd just walk away - and not leave it until iphone 5 or 4G to make available. I dont think they need market share so badly that they would give Verizon a phone that they would cripple by not supporting data and voice together ASAP. That said, missing this would be reason enough for there to NOT be an apple event. As said in other posts, this was a feature plugged by apple and ATT early on and if its not available yet, Apple wouldnt want to have to deal with that "backtracking".

So I expect this to be a "featured" part of the announcement, with a specific launch timetable.

I also expect Steve's comments on data plan limits and tethering to be key to how/why he explains Apple's interest in coming to the carrier. Finally, Verizon will need to make some promises to iphone/VZW customers, such as no changes to data plan usage terms or tethering during the 2 year contract period. They know this can lure customers, and they know it can cause them to lose them back. My sense is they have been smarter than ATT about such things.

I expect that to be the main part of their message. "Same phone, better value". They dont need to do any marketing of the phone itself, which is great, because 10s of millions in the US know what it is and how it works already.

This should serve them well.

The only reason I'm excited at all about VZW getting the iPhone is that it will force ATT to stop acting like the maniacal bullies with their customers (me). With some stiff competition in their once exclusive market, hopefully ATT will be forced to revisit their ABSOLUTELY ABSURD fees. I seriously doubt anything will actually change, cause VZW wants their money just as badly as ATT......but a man can hope.

PS. Seriously, ATT. I pay you $30 a month for supposedly unlimited data. The last time I checked, SMS messages went across your network as, oh I don't know.....DATA!!!:confused: You're a bunch of criminals to charge me an extra $20 a month for just SMS. Someone should haul you all to jail.

While I agree, VZN looks to be doing the same, no?

The market is moving to all data packages anyways.

In 5 years I would imagine that there will be no "minutes" or "SMS"....those are all just the way they market anyways, right?

Its all data on thier end.

I would imagine soon enough that you simply will have a data package, which you will spend any which way you choose, be that on minutes, sms, mms, or web usage.

My hunch is that we don't feel limited by features we've never used. You may have had an iPhone before and had the feature and still not used it, I don't know... I agree everyone's usage is different and personal... but I think a lot of people use it now, and don't even realize it, and won't notice until it is gone.

I hate them. I left them back in 04 when they were Cingular. Their service sucked, their customer service sucked. Hell, anything with the word "service" in it over there sucked.

I remember walking into one of their stores and not one person acknowledged that I was there. Store was empty. I'm like "hellllloooooo" and no one answer. I'm like you scumbags, and walked out. Not to mention the overcharging and such I had to deal with.

The true winners

I would say where AT&T will be losing out is in areas where AT&T has little or no native coverage, but Verizon does have a presence.

I saw this last year in Montana where Verizon and Alltel were the cell providers. AT&T claimed it was coming in, but I haven't heard any word that they have made proper progress, yet.

I don't care for Verizon (worst customer service, I've ever experienced), but if AT&T can't expand its coverage, then Verizon will gladly take the new customers who have been waiting for the iPhone for the past 4 years.

AT&T seems mad. . . and preparing for tomorrow. Lol

Am I the only one staying with AT&T?
People leaving the network might help us that's staying.

This whole AT&T sucks thing is blown way out of proportion. Everybody I know with an iPhone, and I know quite a few, is happy with AT&T. I think that the vast majority will stay put. Of course they will lose a considerable number of subscribers, but nothing like the numbers in the millions that are being thrown around.

Now I've never had Verizon, but if they don't offer simultaneous voice and data and their network speeds are much slower, I can see that keeping a lot of people from switching. Of course if I lived in one of the few areas where AT&T has lousy coverage, I would switching for sure. I think hwoever that those people are in the minority, even though they make a lot of noise on these forums. The old theory that people who are unhappy make a lot of noise and people who are happy rarely say anything holds true here. IMHO

Competition is pro-consumer.

As happy as I am with AT&T, and as much as I dislike Verizon, I welcome the potential opportunities that this competition will bring.

Wanna hear something funny? SMS traffic doesn't cost the carriers a damn thing. It's pure profit.

I think it's pointless to switch from ATT iPhone 4 to a Verizon iPhone 4 at this point UNLESS the Verizon iPhone X is an updated/improved version. Like everyone has been saying, this summer will uncover some of the future plans for the iPhone on both Verizon and ATT.

I also think that we'll see that some of the "network" issues with ATT are in fact caused by the iPhone's own issues and not just ATT. My company phone is on ATT and I NEVER have dropped calls on it, but I do experience some dropped calls on my iPhone. iPhone on Verizon may uncover some short comings in the iPhone that Apple can/will hopefully address ASAP.

We'll see, We'll see....

This has kind of turned into a ATT v Verizon consumer base battle.

I think in the end this will be good for all iPhone users, for the same reasons monopolies are considered bad.

Even if you like ATT and are going to stick with them, or have to be on Verizon for whatever reason, in the end more of us will have access to an iPhone (which is good). As well as it will create a competition for ATT which will most likely keep them on their toes.

If there is no where else to go (for an iPhone), what's the incentive for improving yourself? Or your network? But when there is another player that is also offering the iPhone it will keep them competitive.

I'm in no rush to leave them. I've had enough experience with AT&T and Verizon to hate them about equally for somewhat different reasons. I'll decide down the road when the dust settles.

Bad for AT&T = me :)

They are the biggest bunch of liars I've ever seen.
You haven't had enough experience with their competitors. :)
Especially Verizon. What they've got in a more reliable network, they make up for in 'customer service' when they've got something to lose.

Really? Because Verizon been having unlimited date for smart phones for years.. Just because they get the iPhone that will not change....
They'll probably change it up in time to come. They've been considering it—they're probably waiting to see how things turn out, and hanging in there for the time being to lure more iPhone users away from AT&T (and users from other sources as well).

Why and who really uses both Voice and data at the same time?.. I have never use it and I see it as being rude if you are checking your email or looking at some thing that has nothing to do with the person you are talking to..
I'm starting to think these sentiments come from people who haven't regularly used the iPhone. There are plenty of reasons to use voice and data at the same time, and they center around the conversation, not ignoring it.

why the heck would anyone want a soon-to-be-obsolete iphone 4 with a tiny 3.5" screen and no lte?

if iphone 5 isn't at least 4.2" screen, i'm switching to verizon for a droid bionic! ;)
It won't. Go ahead and switch. It sounds like you've already geared up nicely to play the role of unwavering advocate for whatever it is you choose to spend your money on. I can't imagine why anyone wants a device that big in their pocket all the time... it isn't like the screen is any better. Maybe if a person has bad eyesight...

Coverage quality tends to be regional in nature. So you and all your friends are happy, and that makes sense as ATT must have pretty good coverage where you are.

Move someplace else and your phone might become a significant problem.

Guess what? Verizon charges for SMS too

Once Verizon's LTE network is stable and Apple releases an iPhone LTE, then that will be the down fall of ATT. I can't stand how ATT is saying "The iPhone was built for speed, you don't get that on Verizon, blah blah blah." In the long run the iPhone will be more superior on Verizon some day.

Last year, ATT offered to let me out of my contract because their service was so bad (in a major city!) and I could nit make calls from my apartment and could barely get a 3G signal even outside. I turned the offer down because I liked my iPhone so much. Now I winder if they'll give me another chance out of that contract...

I hope it all pans out. I need me some big red.

I'm very happy for you and all the folks who have posted, 'if only Verizon had the iPhone I would buy immediately' and words to that effect. Finally, that recurring drone will be over!

As for me, I've had AT&T for years and have had nothing but excellent service both pre-iPhone and now with my third iPhone. This has included living in Northern Virginia (Fairfax), East Bay, San Francisco area (Moraga) and now in Raleigh, NC.

So, for now I'm just hoping all the Verizon wannabe crowd leaves AT&T as it will only make us remaining have better service.

Good bye and Good luck!
