If you find someone's wallet, do you demand that they reward you with cash? No. You return it because it's the right thing to do. If they reward you, it's nice of them, but hardly a requirement on their part. Why do you need a reward for doing the right thing? Children need a cookie for being good. Not grown men.
The question is if Verizon is DEMANDING you to return the phone without reward.

Verizon still has not offered to send me a box or prepaid label. They stated they would repay me for shipping costs if I wanted to send it back. At no point did they ask for it back either.

Maybe you got a bad CS rep who's not very good. I would maybe talk to someone else and say "I would like to send it back and this is what I need in order to do that." and then add "Paying the shipping costs initially from my own pocket is not convenient for me, and I shouldn't have to do that as this is not my mistake."

I can't see any reasonable CS rep not assisting you after that.

And if you feel you want to get something extra, I would say "considering I can legally keep this $800 phone, and the fact that this has been a major hassle for me, it'd be nice to see some compensation out of this, such as a gift card or credits for my bill." If they say no to that I wouldn't push it, but do what you feel you need to.

This is what I think should be done. One, send back the phone. However, if you don't I would like to see the following from Verizon.

1. Blacklist the phone
2. Blacklist you
3. Tell the other carriers about you, so they can blacklist you as well

.

Or just drop it off at a Verizon store

shouldn't have to do that either, that could be out of his way or an inconvenience. they should send him a box and label.

Then ask Verizon to pay for it.

This isn't some moral dilemma. It's just being stubborn and stupid.

if it was me i would tell them i don't have time to do that. send a box and label and i will happily send it back.

You're acting like shipping something out is a major inconvenience. I understand that it's not the easiest thing to do, but it sure as hell isn't difficult.

it could be if you're someone who's busy and can't get to a fed ex/ups before they close at like 6 or 7

LOL, the OP obviously didn't see this coming...

Now you're just being foolish, I mean really. This isn't a what would you like to see happen to the OP thread here.

He was the one that brought up the FTC agreement. I simply posted it and as it reads he is not in the right on this one.
I am not talking about the FTC guideline, but about the agreement between the company and the customer mentioned in it.

If you can't or won't ship the phone back to Verizon or take it by a store then let them blacklist the stupid phone and throw it in the trash. Life is to short to get all worked up about material things.

Now Verizon is saying yea technically you can keep it but we will blacklist the phone so it will be useless. Any thoughts?
Yes return the phone, if you don't want to ship it to VZW, drop it off at a local verizon store.

Clearly you want your cake and eat it too, but VZW isn't stupid, they made a mistake you tried to use the law to take advantage of them, and they replied that they'll then just black list it.

Why go through that much hassle of arguing and dealing with this, when returning the phone is the ethical thing to do.

Just return it. Even if you have to drive to a Verizon store. It's not that big a deal to go to a store.

Forget the compensation crap. If you ever lose anything of yours you would want the person who finds it to take the time to find you so just do the right thing.

Can someone explain to me how keeping someone else's property that was accidentally sent to you is okay, even in the eyes of the FTC?

I've lost something of mine before and never got it back and it was pretty important.

Amazon did this to me once. I called them up and offered to ship it back, they told me I could keep it. Then again, it was a $15 item, lol. Now a $1000 phone? Seems kinda pissy that they aren't sending a prepaid mailer to send it back... but Verizon hasn't wronged me - I'd definitely feel ****** keeping something that wasn't mine at the expense of Verizon. Since you're asking - I'd vote for sending it back. I'm sure the question: "Do you want me to send it back?" would be met with a positive yes.

What if these accidents happen too often at a company?

I suppose that's somewhat reasonable, but one can hardly complain about Verizon black listing their own phone. The title of this thread is incorrect.
