I'l never understand how people can switch to Verizon's network. I have to multi-task for my business by running apps, texting, surfing the web, all while being on the phone. How on earth are people going to be productive on Verizon's network?

I'm with you on that one, they don't know that by switching to Verizon, you'll get a much slower network and no multitasking

Because you're in the minority. Most people don't have a need for simultaneous voice and data.

I've been with Verizon for 8-9 years and I can probably count on one hand the number of times I've wanted to use it.

Once you use it, you can't live without it. It's a great feature....and all of you Verizon users have been left in the dark by your leader (Verizon). How can anyone argue against having it as an option? You Verizon Fanboys amaze me.

i have the unlimited $30 plan on verizon with my blackberry, and its truly unlimited. i hit 500 gb last month with no penalties.

Let's do some math.
500Gb a month
say there is 31 days in a month, thats about 16Gbs a day for every single day

now lets say you use your phone/tether 16 hours each day and get 8 hours of sleep, that means that for the time you are awake, you are using 1Gb PER HOUR

or, say you don't sleep, then its .7Gbs EVERY HOUR for 744 hours in a month (of 31 days).....

I really want to believe you.... but I think I'm gonna call BS on this, but who knows......

One should think so, but unfortunately this is not always true. They often have some clause that allows them to charge extra for excessive usage, slow down your connection, .... the detail is in the fine print where they can define what they mean with unlimited - does not matter what the general understanding of that word is. This said, my grandfathered AT&T unlimited seems to be truly unlimited since I never experienced any problems.

I'm not saying that Verizon unlimited is not unlimited, I'm just saying we don't know without reading the fine print.

You unlimited naysayers are basically full of crap.

"Unlimited" means exactly that. There is no fine print to define it otherwise.

As U.S. consumers we're pretty stupid but not totally brainless (yet).

I'm pretty sure verizons want be out til 2012 why would apple make a device for verizons with such a short life cycle? They want to make as much money as they can from verizons so looks like you will be waiting longer then June/July ;)

LOL... I'll give you a reason... MONEY!!! there are plenty of fools who will buy the first verizon iPhone and then buy the second one as well. I don't see apple holding back the iPhone 5 just because of Verizon. I have a VERY high level of confidence that the verizon iPhone 5 will be released the same time as the ATT iphone 5

I think it's cool that Verizon is going to continue offering unlimited data. I have no intention of switching (AT&T coverage in my area is good, and I have no desire to pay a termination fee and by another iPhone 4...). I would be kinda pissed if I was on Verizon though. I'm on a family plan and I'm the only person who really used much data, all of the other lines on our plan use the $15 200mb plan and if I had to pay an extra 15 bucks each per month for them to continue to use 50 mb a month I'd be pissed. Actually, while we're on the subject of AT&T data plans, I've never hit the 2 gig cap. I'm almost always on wifi, so I don't mind saving the extra 5 bucks.

As for the simultaneous voice and data, I didn't think it was a big deal until I got my iPhone. I can't tell you how many times I've been using google maps while I was talking to someone trying to get someplace. It's not something that is necessary, but it is something that you miss when you don't have it any more.

Shy of tethering to your computer and using your phone as a hot spot, I don't see how there are enough hours in the day (and juice in your phone's battery) to consume 17GB of data per month.

I think it's pretty obvious that when we talk about 10+ gb most likely it's because of tethering (paid or unpaid)

I'm usually a fan of things unlimited, but in this regard, I'm happier with AT&T's offering. It's five dollars cheaper, and does everything I want with tons of space to spare. I had the unlimited plan, but never went over 600mb of data. Hence, I switched data plans.

I browse the internet a good amount, and use a lot of applications with data throughout the day. 2gb is plenty for most people (98%). Those two percent will be happy on Verizon's network, and they will clog it up for everyone else.

Once we hit 4G + and "really" need lots of data throughput, unlimited may be needed. That "grandfathered plan" won't do jack w/ 4G. You'll need a new plan anyway, so why waste $5 a month on something that can't be grandfathered for more than a few years? 2GB is pretty much the same as unlimited for most users. I've never once thought about restricting myself because of data limits since the switch. I had peace of mind either way.

Objective Comparison

Anyone else wish to add who is better?

AT&T PROs
  • Faster Network
  • Much larger global access
  • Free Wifi
  • Rollover Minutes
  • Concurrent Voice and Data Access
  • Lower "entry point" to service ($15)

Verizon PROs
  • Larger 3G Footprint in US
  • Lower dropped call rate (especially in San Fran and NY)

It's very predictable. Verizon users never think its important, ATT users know they couldn't do without it.

Utter nonsense. Network speed just depends where you're at. Same with basic phone connectivity. I'm w/AT&T and still on 2G where I live. There's also some "dead zones" here where I'm guaranteed at least one dropped call depending on what part of the road I'm driving on.

The multitasking though, I agree. Whenever I'm sitting in the arsehole of the world and put on hold, I usually put the phone on speaker and use Safari, email.

For 99% of the users, it all comes down to plan price. Here's hoping AT&T will do some price matching. (But I'm not holding my breath).

iPhone 5 (or 6 if they are really lame) will be 4G so that will solve your problem.

This is awesome news! AT&T is probably fuming right now.

ATT is probably laughing its ass off. Hoping that all it's money-losing customers jump to Verizon and start costing them money, meanwhile improving ATT's rep because of the lower usage and hurting Verizon's. Yeah, poor ATT ;)

I think the unlimited will be short lived. Come June when Verizon gets the iPhone 5 they will move to a tiered plan.

Wrong.. Verizon been having unlimited for years for it is other smart phones the iPhone is not going to change that..

Verizon's idea of unlimited usually has a 5GB cap...trust me.

There is no cap I wish people would stop making crap up...

Every damned thread this old myth comes up. There is no 5 gig cap. None. Read the Terms of Service. There is no throttling or overage past five gigabytes of data on a $29.99 or $44.99 unlimited data plan on Verizon. I routinely exceed five gigs, never had a problem. The number of ignorant, misled, or rabidly anti-Verizon people who persist in believing this blows my mind.

There is no cap and there never was. The five gig limit is, was, and always was for mobile broadband devices like air cards and mifis. You folks are just plain 100% wrong.

Im at the end of my AT&T contract I guess im going to need to wait it out a bit and see how all this plays out.

That's because you've never had the option. The reason why people continue to point this out is because it really has become a part of how we use the phone. Would not having it be a deal breaker? Probably not. But it would start to become a huge PITA when I wanted to check something while I was on the phone and I couldn't. I use the feature at least 5 or 6 times a day. And I have a feeling I'm not in the minority here.
