What happens when you get out of a HSPA+ area and need to fall back to crapy EDGE?

I'm assuming that is why they are upgrading/expanding, but that is just a guess.

I travel a pretty good amount, and the last time I had Edge service was with the original iPhone.

Funny part is, VZW's LTE will cover as much as AT&T's HSPA+ ;)

nope!

there's no way in hell that apple (steve) will want any spotlight shared with google (android). expect to have no news said about any verizon/apple partnership about the iphone until apple announces it first.

What happens when you get out of a 4G area? You need to fallback on a solid 3G network, not a crappy CDMA one (speedwise, coverage is good).

ATT 3G HSPA+:
According to Engadget, the upgrade could realistically offer most users download speeds between 7.2Mbps and 14.4Mbps.

Verizon '3G':
(wikipedia) On June 30, 2007, Verizon Wireless had completed the overhaul of the entire EV-DO network to EV-DO Rev. A. This enables PC Cards and certain phones to obtain theoretical peak download speeds of 3.1 Mbit/s and upload speeds of up to 1.8 Mbit/s. [11] The actual download and upload speeds vary due to a number of factors, and users will typically see speeds close to 1 Mbit/s down, and 500 kbit/s up.

Here's what happens when I lose 4G on my EVO, I get speeds of 800k-1.5mbps. When I was on ATT, I lose 3G and move to edge, ungodly slow speeds. Now, you lose 4g and fall back on 3g it's not that bad. Not as bad as losing 3g and falling to edge.

Uh ? Up here, Bell, Rogers, Telus promote the crap out of both their Android offerings and the iPhone. What conflict is there exactly ? Is your grocer in a major conflict of interest because it sells both Kellog's and General Mill's cereal ?

Some of you guys need to get out more. Retailers are not in conflict because they offer choices.

Not really Apple style to be involved in "me too" announcements. At least I can't remember Iphone being announced for any carrier as "we'll have these 5 new android models available this season, oh and iphones too". You remember such an announcement?

I fall back to Edge all the time. Guess you never leave major metropolitan areas.

My contract with Verizon has been up since mid December. If there isn't a Verizon iPhone announcement soon I'm switching to AT&T.

I'm sorely tempted to do the same. But every time I call my brother on his iPhone 4, I can never hear his voice very well. Not because of the phone, but because everyone I know that is on AT&T sounds crappy when they call.

Granted, he has had a lot less dropped calls with the iPhone 4 vs the 3g.

Bell and Telus. And Rogers. Again, you guys need to get out more.

Correct.

Apple announces new Apple products, not their partners.

Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg is not gonna be announcing any new Apple iDevices at CES or anywhere else. Ever.

Steve, Tim, Jonny, Phil. Those guys will announce new Apple products.

Actually, you'd probably fall back on a HSPA network before you hit an EDGE network. HSPA+ is backwards compatible with HSPA.

Exactly the point. AT&T's HSPA coverage isn't anything to crow about. So even though they'll have HSPA+, a good number of people will still be falling back to EDGE (which is slower than EVDO and no simultaneous Voice/Data).

AT&T's 2G network runs on TDMA which was notorious for having crappy voice quality.

This announcement means nothing. There would be no pre-announcement. Apple and Verizon will hold this card until it's ready. I'm sure Verizon has seen that Apple can steal the show... so why tip the hand saying they're having a Android and Apple announcement on the 6th?

Think about it... if they hold this event... launch new Android phones and then Steve Jobs is invited on stage to introduce the new iPhone for Verizon, the Verizon event would be the talk of the show.

I believe what will happen is there will be a Verizon iPad 1/2 with CDMA in Jan/Feb which will be very popular and will wipe out the Verizon network. Then Apple will release in November the Verizon iPad 2 with LTE capability which incidentally will be AT&T compatible and roamable.

The Verizon iPhone 5 will be 1-12 after Apple has recovered from China and India CDMA handset sales 6-11.

Rocketman

Probably not. Most likely the areas that get upgraded to HSPA+ will be the ones already on HSPA. Unless AT&T finally starts to upgrade their ginourmous 2G network. And I'm not betting my paycheck on that happening anytime soon.

Or, as soon as the droid is announced, the guys phone rings, onstage, and he answers a facetime call with steve ... simultaneously shown on a big screen. That would be funny.

As for CDMA, I'm still unconvinced that Apple is going to release such a CDMA-supported iDevice this year. Why? I don't think Apple has made any major effort into hiring CDMA engineers. I'm sure they have a few on staff, mostly doing prototyping work, but if they had a design headed to production, they would have more than just a few CDMA engineers.

I'm not so sure. Apple tends to only have small teams assigned to various projects. For instance, the whole design team is only a handful of people. I see no reason their CDMA team wouldn't be the same way.

The IPhone announcement will be an event all its own, possibly done in Cupertino when it does happen. And, it will happen. Apple probably has the ATT market almost saturated and has to find a new way to make money. What better way that IPhones for other carriers?!

So we're pretty much saying that Apple will make the announcement if it's true at all, and that if they don't announce it alongside the ipad 2, then it won't happen at all in the near future.

what VZ iPhone?

First, only Apple will announce new Apple products. Anyone who preempts Steve gets their ass handed to them.

Second, why are people still talking about iPhone on any carrier other than ATT until 2012? Do people not remember that 5-year exclusivity contract? Unless ATT has agreed to let Apple out of the contract, there will be no VZ iPhone in 2011.

The only thing I see coming next year is a VZ iPad w/EVDO or LTE, which of course will be announced by Apple, and not VZ.
