Super Computer, what does your calculations say about the post count?
Over 90,000!
90,000! That's impossible!

That's my guess. And if you say what I was referencing you get a cookie.
Does that include Ten-Oak_druid's 15,000 posts saying there will be no Verizon Iphone until 2012? LOL

So when is apple's media event? January ... ????

So yea january is the perfect time for a secondary product cycle, it's about 6 months before June, and about 6 months after June.

I don't see why everyone is excited about the thought of the iPhone on two networks. Here in Britain, the iPhone is available on pretty much any phone network.
Because it would give U.S. consumers a choice. Right now, if you want an iPhone, you're stuck with AT&T. All the UK mobile operators are using the same network technology. You don't care because you have a choice. Americans don't.

In America, there are two standards: W-CDMA (GSM/UTMS on AT&T and T-Mobile USA) and CDMA (Verizon and Sprint). You cannot use the current iPhone on CDMA networks.

You can't even get full functionality by using an unlocked iPhone on the T-Mobile USA network because their 3G data runs on a different frequency that is not supported by the iPhone.

They have not yet alerted the media about any announcements. They typically give one week of lead time.

If they are to make an announcement, it would probably be in the latter half of January, but also not to conflict with CES and Macworld. Apple rightfully no longer participates in tradeshows. In 2011, CES is January 6-9, Macworld is Jan 26-29 (it used to be the week after CES).

They would not announce on the 17th, 18th, or 19th, as they are releasing quarterly earnings on Tuesday the 18th.

Maybe the week before (just after CES), maybe the week after (just before Macworld)

Well if macworld 2011 is 27-29. Would apple's event be earlier?

Just a thought, maybe they will make an announcement about the event in the first week of the year (probably before the 6th so not to steal thunder from the Mac App Store debuting), and the event will take place on 1/11/11?

Apple periodically makes announcements without an actual media event. If they are to do so, then it would be conceivable that would issue a press release right before Macworld.

It is unlikely that Apple would have an actual media event the week of Macworld or CES, particularly at an offsite facility.

Part of Apple's decision to quit attending tradeshows was to have total control of the event: venue, message, timing, etc.

There is no obligation for them to hold any media event in January. Early February is even less likely with the lunar new year (all of their Chinese manufacturing partners shut down for a couple of weeks).

That's a possible date, although it comes very quickly on the heels of CES. Of course, if there is one company that could sap energy and attention away from CES, it would be Apple.

It would a perfect way for Apple to steal whatever attention Android gets from CES.

Here's what will happen:

iPad 2 supports CDMA (which hints iPhone 5 will be supported by Verizon)

Then in June, Apple announces iPhone 5 (which now has a CDMA chip for Verizon customers).

It would seem dumb to release a Verizon iPhone now, when a new one will be released in June. It would cause two different cycles for an identical product.

I.E. Verizon customers who get a new iPhone in January (if one was released), would be upset a new iPhone came out (with new features) months later.

Finally somebody who is extremely smart and seeing it the way Steve Jobs sees it. Why release a Iphone on verizon now when the Iphone 5 is coming in June? The earliest we will see any 4G LTE phones in summer 2011....the Iphone 5 could be one of the first...but I doubt it...probably the Iphone 6 will be LTE.

Wrong... Stop reading Wikipedia.

TDMA is not GSM.
GSM was derived from TDMA, but it is not TDMA.
Hell, even GPRS is part of the GSM standard.

Geckotek is right.

GSM is a TDMA technology.

Now, perhaps you're thinking of USDC, which is ALSO a TDMA technology.

FWIW:

CDMA is used in UMTS and in IS-2000/IS-95 (which is commonly known as CDMA).

FDMA was used in analog cellular.

TDMA is used in GSM and was used in USDC plus a handful of other regional standards (e.g., PDC).

Apple will likely go with HSPA+ technology for the next two iterations of the iPhone (2011, 2012). Much of the world deployed this technology in 2009, now running networks with download speeds of 14Mbps, 21MBps, and even 42Mbps.

Interestingly, T-Mobile USA has a headstart on AT&T in regard to HSPA+ deployment. T-Mobile USA already has plans on upgrading their recently deployed HSPA+ 21 network to HSPA+ 42 in 2011 (in the same way that many European carriers have been upgrading their HSPA+ 21 installations to HSPA+ 42 this year).

While Sprint has their WiMAX "4G" network, the HSPA+ 21 network is actually faster. Verizon has no operational network at these speeds.

My guess is that the iPhone 7 (2013) might have LTE since the vast majority of the world has plans to build out their LTE networks in 2012, plus the LTE spec will be done by then. Or the 2013 iPhone might just be a HSPA+ 42 handset, with the LTE handset coming in 2014.

For everyone who refuses to believe that Verizon ever gets iPhone....why has AT&T all but shut down any reference to the iPhone in their stores? What used to be signs everywhere are now signs for Windows 7, Blackberry Torch, etc...nothing about iPhone. I've even had people ask me why AT&T stopped selling the iPhone (they haven't)....but its obvious that they are moving focus to other phones, which wouldn't happen if they had nothing to worry about.

I'm not reading Wikipedia, used to work in the industry.

You mean to say that TDMA is one of the technologies used in the GSM standard. Sorry, I was being to simple in my responses.

To put it simply, a TDMA only phone will not work on AT&T's network... period. TDMA access was decommissioned years ago.
So you cannot fallback to TDMA.

I was actually unaware that AT&T had decommissioned TDMA (as a stand-alone tech). I was wrong about that.

Same thing applies to GRPS and EDGE.
One is an extension of the other.
They are not the same as you're implying.
You will fall back to EDGE before you fall back to GRPS.

I never said the were the same. I said Edge was an extension of GPRS.

However, re: TDMA and voice quality...which is what I was originally posting about....Edge and GPRS both use TDMA technology. Hence...lousy voice quality. Until AT&T switched to a CDMA based 3G technology (WCDMA), the voice did not improve much. (And yes, I'm aware WCDMA != CDMA, but they are both based on the same base concepts.)

Apple could surprise everyone and announce an iPad 4G LTE on Verizon, but I doubt it.

AT&T is probably throwing $$$ at Apple to keep their exclusive iPhone deal, and Apple will milk every $$$ out of AT&T they're willing to give.

No, you missed the point. AT&T can't upgrade all HSPA units to HSPA+ instantaneously. They concentrate on major metropolitan areas in getting the higher-speed technologies, whereas the outlying areas will get attention later. The HSPA gear is eventually deployed in EDGE areas to expand 3G coverage.

No U.S. carrier can crow about their 3G data performance (or any other aspect of their network). In this year's Consumer Reports survey, Verizon was a 36" giant in a land of 35" midgets. Same with last year's survey. AT&T dropped, Sprint made a little progress, but on a whole, no American mobile operator can be proud of their customer satisfaction ratings.

My bold. Actually, they haven't built out anything for any of these fancy sounding semi-existing technologies except in the few places they sort of had to, like around where Jobs lives....

AT&T's CEO mentioned a few months ago the impending end of exclusivity of certain handsets and that they were changing focus. While he did not specifically name models, it is very likely that the iPhone is one of these handsets where AT&T will lose exclusivity.

If Apple were to add a new iPhone carrier in the United States, the most logical choice would be T-Mobile USA. They would need to a cellular radio chip to supports the 1700MHz AWS band for 3G data, but that would be far less of an engineering task than rolling out a CDMA handset.

What are you talking about "fancy sounding semi-existing technologies" and "like around where Jobs lives..."? That's hilariously absurd.

Do you know that most of Europe deployed HSPA+ 21 networks in 2009 and many upgraded to HSPA+ 42 this year?

You can get HSPA+ 42Mbps service in Egypt and Indonesia.

The American mobile operators are really late to the game. Heck, our neighbors to the north are a year ahead.

Heck, if AT&T was actually building out near where Jobs lives, SF would actually have decent service, which it does not. The service in Palo Alto isn't all that good either.

Because you are Steve Jobs and you see through his eyes? Don't think so.

If by logical you are more concerned about complementary technolgy than you are sales. You're completely ignoring several aspects of the decision making process.
