If by logical you are more concerned about complementary technolgy than you are sales. You're completely ignoring several aspects of the decision making process.
Possible, however I am not ignoring the fact that T-Mobile is an official iPhone carrier in about eight European countries.

Please do mention which parts of the design making process you believe I'm ignoring. Thank you.

AT&T is fantastic in my area.

As it is in my area. Don't pay attention to all the at&t crap thrown around in here. Just make sure when you go with any provider you are VERY aware of their coverage in the areas you use.

I can drop calls on any provider. Simply depends on your location.

There will be a Verizon iPhone announcement between Jan 6th and 31st.:apple:

First I'll start by saying that I literally joined to comment on this matter, usually just a lurker.

In my opinion,

The first thing to remember when looking at all aspects of these rumors is that Apple is a business, and as a business they have one thing in mind, making money.

Those who think the iPhone isn't coming to Verizon at all aren't very smart. Verizon is the largest mobile service provider in the country. It is only logical to assume that the largest smart phone will be put on this carrier at the first available opportunity, which may very well be 2011.

I believe that AT&T's exclusivity is set to end this year. Based on have read it should have been at the beginning of 2010 but because of a deal on iPad pricing between Apple and AT&T the exclusivity of the iPhone was extended for a year. I assumed that to be common knowledge.

As for who will make the announcement and when. Yes Steve Jobs is known for being the center of the spot light on new products. However, a CDMA iPhone 4 is not a new product, it is simply a different chipset. As mentioned by others in this thread, Apple did not announce when the iPhone was moving to other carriers in other parts of the world, that job was left to the carriers themselves. I personally feel that it could be announced by Steve and Ivan together on the 6th or Apple could possibly hold their own PC later in the month, IMO there is no telling.

It makes sense also that Steve Jobs would want this announced along side/on the same day as Verizon's announcements of Android phones. The Android OS is obviously the iPhone's biggest competitor but let's be honest if a Verizon iPhone is announced the same day no one is going to be talking about Android phones. Why wouldn't Steve Jobs want to steal the spotlight from droid phones like that?

As for Apple not releasing an iPhone 4 on verzion just to turn around and release the iPhone 5. Since when has apple worried about whether people just got a product before the turn around and update it? This is how they make their money. They release something, improve it 6 months later and reap the benefits of people who have to have the newest thing. It makes perfect sense for Apple to make millions of dollars on the iPhone 4 from Verizon and then turn around and do it again 6 months later with the iPhone 5.

As for Apple not releasing a CDMA iPhone because it is a "old" technology. You have to remember that Verizon isn't the only phone carrier on CDMA globally. There is also India and China to supply with iPhones, and as a business you better believe Apple wants all the money it can get.

I think that about hits all the talking points I have seen here.

So simple, even the Verizon COO mentioned it. Who would have thunk?

;) :) :p

I think you mean CEO.

No, I meant Verizon COO Lowell McAdam, not Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg.

Verizon isn't announcing squat. If they end up being business partners, Verizon Wireless is Apple's biatch. Remember, Apple basically thinks of their mobile operator partners as dumb pipes. They sell bandwidth to iPhone users, nothing else. They don't get a cut from the iTunes Store nor App Store. Some of these carriers pay a privilege to have the iPhone as an exclusive.

Apple doesn't let carriers foist their own media stores, etc. on iPhone users. And no carrier branding. The iPhone is all about Apple, nobody else.

Probably should've googled COO before posting that. Sorry.

You don't need to apologize to me.

Apologize to the Verizon fanbois who thought they were getting an iPhone next month. They aren't. You lifted their hopes by pretending to know something that you did not.

Like I said, Verizon isn't announcing squat. Apple will announce this one on their own timetable, not Verizon's.

I'm not pretending to know anything; all I am doing is speculating about what I think will happen.

From a business perspective, I like exclusivity deals. While I'd hate it as a consumer, as a businessperson it would be interesting to see Apple move into a 5 year exclusivity deal with Verizon. Could you imagine if AT&T customers couldn't get the iPhone 5? There is a mass freakout every time they think they won't get upgrade pricing fast enough to have it on the first day. Could you imagine the venom in the blogs? The mass exodus from AT&T? Verizon's network buckling under the stress. Bitter customers who have purchased hundreds of dollars in apps stuck in another year of their ATT contract while Verizon customers have the newest toy?

It is unlikely that Verizon would get a 5-yr exclusivity deal. They run a CDMA + EV-DO network. 85-90% of the world runs on GSM/UTMS + HSPA.

From a COGS and development perspective, it makes no sense for Apple to develop, manufacture and market two vastly incompatible handsets. Basically, in order for Verizon to gain iPhone exclusivity, they would have to nearly buy out every AT&T iPhone subscriber.

Verizon Wireless does not have that cash. The days of iPhone exclusivity are nearing an end, not transferring to a different party.

Besides, Apple has obliquely admitted that iPhone exclusivity may be hurting revenue. (That was Apple COO Tim Cook who acknowledged that possibility in a finance call, not Steve Jobs).

Every time Apple has changed iPhone access, it has been to increase overall distribution, not to reduce it.

Your argument makes zero sense.

Android Phones are actually more bandwidth pigs than the iPhone.

UNLESS it came with a giant up front cash payment from Verizon. Apple doesn't actually stand to lose any money since ATT abandoned revenue sharing. They'd probably sell just as many new units on Verizon as they would on ATT, possibly more since some ATT customers would jump ship.

It's not an argument, it probably would never happen, it just would be interesting. When Apple gives up exclusivity in the US, they're handing over their bargaining chip. They'll be like every other phone manufacturer, at the total mercy of the carriers. Innovations like Visual Voicemail, App stores, etc. never would have happened if Apple didn't have leverage over ATT.

The iPhone already is available in China and India. China Unicom for China and Vodafone and Airtel for India. Remember, Vodafone holds a large 45-55% ownership of Verizon. India and China are not new markets for the iPhone.

Verizon Wireless does not have that cash.

So exactly how much cash would it take? How much cash does Verizon have?

Android Phones are actually more bandwidth pigs than the iPhone.

I don't think it's the phones the are bandwidth hogs, more likely the users. Techie types tend to gravitate toward the Android due to having more control.

Nobody said they were new markets. However, they still have customers on CDMA networks that would buy a CDMA iPhone. China Unicom is almost as large as Verizon and will be surpassing Verizon very soon.

Finally somebody who is extremely smart and seeing it the way Steve Jobs sees it. Why release a Iphone on verizon now when the Iphone 5 is coming in June?

I must have missed the press release announcing the iphone 5 in June. Trends don't equal fact.

The technology and competition is changing too fast for Apple to limit itself to annual model changes. 6 months cycle for Verizon and then 6 months later for AT$T makes good business sense.

Nor did I say that anyone "said" that they were. I was replying to a previous commentor who stated "There is also India and China to supply with iPhones" I was only clarifying that the iPhone is aready available and being supplied in those markets.

Yes, I know exactly who you were replyng to. Thanks for the clarification, but I'm guessing the OP knew that.

Well what happens if you fall out of HSPA AND EDGE.... exactly, you ain't got sht!
What are you babbling about? What's your point?

When you don't get data, you usually still have a cellphone. The iPhone still accepts GSM calls. If you have a different manufacturer's handset, it would be the same thing.

And guess what? There are places of this planet where there is no cellular coverage, regardless of ******* cellular carrier.

It doesn't matter if you are on Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, US Cellular, whoever, there are places where there are no towers.

The entire point (referring back to the original 2 posts) was that when you fall out of HSPA+, you fall into Edge, which is worse than falling from Verizon's LTE to EV-DO.

And no, you won't fall from HSPA+ to HSPA in most areas unless AT&T does some MAJOR upgrading of their entire network.
