i'm still on the old AT&T familytalk plan with 2 smartphones and 2 dumb phones...was planning to pull this stunt come september since the dumbphones are coming out of contract...hope AT&T implementation comes after sept!
Verizon put end of August for a reason. They know new iPhone is coming out.
I would be shocked if ATT didn't match Verizon's policy in the next 3 weeks before iPhone is announced. They both follow each other. Just a matter of time.
By the way. I've flipped a Note 2 back in early 2013 when it was refurb for 1 penny at att. Waived activation fee. Sold it for $500. Paid the ETF (which was about $350/360 after taxes).
Easy $140-150 profit. Took less than 10 minutes to sell the phone on Craigslist. Met buyer inside BJs wholesale. Had to go get gasoline there anyways.
So "loopholes" will always be around as long as subsidy model is around.
Heck. I just used a "loophole" to close one of my att lines. Purchased 32gb iPhone 5S October 2013 for $299 on contract. So existing contract runs through October 2015. I immediately canceled the data plan and put flip phone on it. Gave iPhone 5S to my brother on another att account.
ATT let's people who singed contracts before January 18th 2014 if they signed up for att next.
So when Lg G3 came out last month. I signed up for att next on this line. Per att rule (and yes I confirmed it with the store and via 611). You have to make 2 next payments before you can cancel the line.
So making my 2 payments. On August 28th. I will cancel my line (will pay off lg g3 in full).
So I get to cancel the ghost line without any further ETF. Saves me 14 months of ghost line $9.99 (plus taxes) payments.
So this little manuever saved me $140 plus taxes in payments if I would have kept paying the $9.99 till October 2015. And saved me $325-10 months ($10). So I avoided the $225 ETF as well.
Take advantage of these loopholes while you can!
PS. I got in on the verizon unlimited loophole back in Feb 2012 (7 months after they supposedly eliminated unlimited data for new customers back in July 2011). Verizon finally shut down that loophole in April 2012.

I have both Verizon and att service so always angling loopholes.
Sadly the biggest loophole of all time was closed back in 2007 or early 2008. I forgot. But for ATT premiere customers. For some reason they let some users (including me) get unlimited subsidized upgrades on any line each month. Now I didn't "abuse" that loophole like some people did. Some were buying 5 new phones on each line every month. I was buying a new phone about once every 4 months when I got bored with a phone.(and yes. This was the ultimate upgrade program!)
