Verizon Wireless customers can choose from two 4G LTE Mobile Broadband data plans: $50 monthly access for 5 GB monthly allowance or $80 monthly access for 10 GB monthly allowance, both with $10/GB overage.
So if you guess you need 5GB or less then you pay
1GB - $50
2GB - $50
3GB - $50
4GB - $50
5GB - $50
6GB - $60
7GB - $70
8GB - $80
9GB - $90
10GB - $100
11GB - $110
12GB - $120
13GB - $130
14GB - $140
15GB - $150
and if you guess you need 10GB or more then you pay
1GB - $80
2GB - $80
3GB - $80
4GB - $80
5GB - $80
6GB - $80
7GB - $80
8GB - $80
9GB - $80
10GB - $80
11GB - $90
12GB - $100
13GB - $110
14GB - $120
15GB - $130
Because the incremental rate is the same under both plans, it'll be silly to get the 10GB plan unless you are really sure that'll need at least 9GB/month every single month. If you exceed that only occasionally you're still better off with the 5GB plan. If you use 6GB/month to 8GB/month, the 5GB plan is still best.

Yes. Sprint was first to the part with 4g. You may have heard of the EVO. My buddy has it. I have a 4g hot spot and I have gotten up to 12 mb down in Atlanta but in Chicagoland it's 3-7 mb for me typically.
I would have figured Verizon would have wanted to have some handsets out earlier. Looks like they are waiting for ATT.

What would be the significance of the woman looking forward with rings in the background for that Ad?

I was wondering that too. Striking imagery - and irrelevant to the subject (like most faces which appear in advertising).

I need to see how much data Skype really uses up on average. I was thinking of ditching my Droid (which I can no longer use since it's not Exchange 2010 compatible) and moving to just my iPT gen 4 with a Skype number. I would then use it with a MiFi (once a 4G version comes out) which would enable me to also use it with my iPad and laptops. Very handy. Drawback of course is the requirement to carry at least two devices, however small they are.

They're not waiting for ATT, they're just waiting for handsets.

None exist today.

What would be the significance of the woman looking forward with rings in the background for that Ad? Do people get paid making these things?

Illustrate in some 'fashion', movement, speed, etc of the 4G connection.
And yes people get paid to make the most nonsensical types of ads like these.

From the press release:

"The company expects 4G LTE average data rates in real-world, loaded network environments to be 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink."

Still a wide range, but this is WIRELESS. It's a hostile environment and changes by the second.

I like those figures, they set a reasonable expectation. Latency ("ping times") should be on par with cable modem so the experience should be at least comparable to being at home with a decent connection.

goodbye cox lame cable internet!

No Mac compatible modems?

Looks like the Verizon LG modem only supports Windows. Can't seem to find any info on the Pantech modem to be released later.

Guess I'm stuck in the ATT 3g world for now on my MacBook Air!

$$$

I was under the impression that 4G was going to be free, or was it WIMAX / Sprint? Seems like a bloody ripoff. So now I have a super speedy connection and it's possible for me to watch a Netflix movie but I won't cos it'll probably cost me $10 per movie! Why are these buggers charging the same price as 3G and appear to have the same rates?????

Bugger you, I'm sticking to good old GPRS --- o ---- !!

Richard's unscientific summary of upcoming cellphone bills based on data usage.
================================================

o / aka 2G = $
E = $
3G = $$ (hard to get over 300 mb of usage)
4G LTE = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ (10 netfliks movies)

Also why are we paying so much for cellphone / data in the USA. A friend pays 40 Euros for unlimited data and voice and got a free Android phone - I think she had to sign a contract but still ........

no simultaneous voice and data with Verizon

Multiple mainstream news sources have reported that Apple is set to release a Verizon-compatible version of the iPhone as early as January 2011, although that model is not expected to support Verizon's new 4G network.

So does this mean if Verizon releases an iPhone in January that it will use EVDO? EVDO can't utilize the data and voice networks simultaneously, or am I not understanding that correctly? I always thought that was the big reason Verizon didn't get the iPhone in the first place. The experience wouldn't be as good not being able to do both at the same time.

Yes and paid quite well. They mostly target those with social personalities, trend following, fashionable and upper middle class demographics. They tend to ignore techie types that spend some of their social life who post to internet discussion groups.

There are always exceptions like this, but they will be rare.

In an cross-country trip last summer, I can tell you I had Verizon EVDO coverage for all of it while HSPA coverage from AT&T only came into play in the major cities.

Since I don't go on cross-country trips, but major city to city in my life's area, I'm AT&T covered.

Does anyone know what Att HSPA+ speeds are going to look like?

sounds like someone who is paid (very well?) to make crappy, irrelevant adverts.

so sleepy looking, non-attractive asian women speak to those with "social personalities"?

advertising is like a giant masturbation party, with people in a closed loop convincing each other that they are really doing good work.

they're not. this collateral sucks it.

Right - I agree. I normally don't go cross country either, but I also recognize that:

* People live there

* People do drive through those areas as well

If you find yourself in either one of those population groups, then it's not a trivial matter.

Does anyone know what Att HSPA+ speeds are going to look like?

Like HSDPA and HSUPA, there are various steps in HSPA+, and I haven't heard where AT&T will wind up.

It can go quite high, north of 100Mbps for the most outlandish (and therefore unlikely) implementations.

Does anyone know what Att HSPA+ speeds are going to look like?

Their theoretical speed is 7.2 Mbps. In areas where I know HSPA+ has been deployed in conjunction with new Ethernet back-haul, I've reached tested speeds between 2 - 4 Mbps (using Speed Test app for the iPhone).

I can understand (maybe) wanting faster speeds if I was using 4G or HSPA+ through a wireless modem on my laptop, but cracks me up when people complain about speeds less than 5 Mbps on their iPhone. Seriously? Is there really that much of a delay checking your email or movie times at 2 Mbps versus 5 Mbps?

And now that Verizon has quietly rolled out tiered pricing (without unlimited) for 4G, doesn't the faster speeds just mean I'll hit my cap earlier in the month. :D

Based on Macrumors posts, I'd take issue with the "techie types" moniker. Most people participating don't seem to show a significant degree of tech savvy, unless you're setting the bar fairly low.
