Stockholm has had LTE since Dec 2009 and the entire country will have it in less than a few more months (150Mb/S in urban areas and 80Mb/s counrty-wide).

Stockholm (a city of less than a million people) represents close to 1/4 of Sweden's population.

The metropolitan area of Copenhagen represents 1/3 of Denmark's population.

This is why those countries are always on the top of international surveys in terms of fiber optics and wireless deployments. Meaningless statistical abnormalities.

Interesting story. Sprint has 60 4G up and running already. Appears Sprint doesn't get the coverage. I will not switch.

Why is it so expensive? Verizon needs to cut the price of the data plan, cause I wouldn't pay $50 for 5 Gigs of data. If AT&T is smart, they won't follow Verizon on the pricing system when they get 4G.

If you had the unlimited plan you were given the option to keep the unlimited. So I did. It's just nice to have.

Once again, what part of this do you guys refuse to understand?!?!

$50/month is NOT a phone data plan!!!!! IT IS NOT THE EQUIVALENT OF THE IPHONE DATA PLAN! STOP COMPARING IT TO THE $30 iPHONE DATA PLAN!

$50/month is for their laptop data plan. AT&T's laptop data plan has a 5GB limit as well and costs $60/month.

We currently do not know how much Verizon will charge for LTE data on a phone plan.

Stop saying it's too high when as of now it is $10/month cheaper than AT&T's comparable plan.

And for those that asked about real world speeds...the network is not under load yet, but it's looks to be really fast.

Whether you wanna call it 4G or not, the bottom line is that it's damn fast.

Apple's contract with AT&T will expire in 2012

That gives a year of development time for the next iphone that will be compatible with this new network.

Apple likes to play it safe and make sure there are no major issues with new releases so the timing is perfect. Verizon will have a year to get their network going before the new iphone comes out.

On the contrary, Apple seems to push the release of a new iPhone each summer whether it's been fully field tested or not. We've seen the results of this, starting with the 3G model's CDMA power ramp goof, ending with the 4G antenna.

(Hmm. Are iPhone models like Star Trek movies used to be? That is, every other one is comparatively bad? - grin)

Verizon also won't allow something that doesn't work right, even if it means a delay.

Well I oversimplified but still I believe a step up to 4G will have more development time than more recent upgrades. I don't believe the first iphone was rushed. Perhaps the upgrades since then were.

As for the antenna problem, I believe that was overblown in the media.

This is huge... iPhone 4G will be here in June of '11.

I can hear the tabloids now... "The best phone on the best network."
I don't think the CDMA iPhone that is being produced right now, the one that's going to roll out in 2011 on Verizon, is capable of using the 4G network.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't SPRINT already begun rolling out its 4G program and beaten VERIZON and ATT?

I don't have SPRINT myself, but I know they are advertising in my market for 4G. I have no idea what handset it is or if there even is one yet.

Anybody know?
SprintPCS has 4G of a sort, yes. Their problem is that, although they can honestly say they have very high speeds in a couple of metro markets, in most of their market (including the huge Metro DC market), their speeds are slower than those of the AT&T 3G system.

Users of the EVO 4G will often have what appears to be a 4G signal that works less well and less speedily than the AT&T 3G device that's right next to them. And you're paying a $10.00/month premium for 4G on the 4G devices even though the footprint of the system is rather small.

I would have figured Verizon would have wanted to have some handsets out earlier. Looks like they are waiting for ATT.
I think they're waiting for the hardware manufacturers to come up with devices that are both profitable and cheap enough that the average consumer would consider purchasing.

goodbye cox lame cable internet!
Well...the speed once you get going might be fast enough to consider switching from cable to tethering wireless. Maybe. But there's still a visible latency to think about. I don't think you're going to want to be on any wireless system if you need instant response (gaming?) out of your home-based or business-based computer systems.

No carrier is rolling out a true 4G network - as defined by ITU, the official international telecommunications standards organization. Every use of the term "4G" in an ad or product description is a marketing lie designed to confuse customers and attempt to bash competitors. A true 4G network will have speeds of 1Gbit/s for stationary reception and 100Mbit/s for mobile and be all IP packet based. It would be nice if these clowns who market technology to the average person on the street could be dragged out into the street and beaten severely with sticks and pipes on national TV. :D

So far this is the smartest and most direct to-the-point post in this forum. I would have almost written it verbatim, but since I was beaten to the punch, I'll just say "what he said".

WHY WHY WHY is the general public so stupid and so easily fooled by false adverstising and WHY oh WHY is this kind of false advertising allowed?

I guess where there are sheep there will always be wolves. Glad I'm smart enough to spot a wolf.

Good post.

Those I suspect have gone they way of the dodo. Dead and never to be seen again. I will agree However that the current tiered plans from all companies need work.

I was one of the lucky ones that was grandfathered in to AT&T's unlimited data plan. Good thing too because since TuneIn radio and NetFlix became available I am using massive amounts of data. So far I've racked up almost 6 gigs in data usage this month (1 day from the end of a billing cycle) which really shocked me. Before those apps came out I had only used 800 megs tops per month. Imagine if FaceTime calls were allowed to be placed using the 3g network. I guess I see now why AT&T made the move to the 2 gig plan.

That's wayy too high. My 30$ iPhone data plan also provides me data for my laptop in the form of tethering. 30$, 6 GB. Tethering.

Again, 50$ is a big rip off for data on iPad.

You must be one of the lucky ones.

Had a lot of problems at home and on the road with my Gen 1 iPhone, huge areas of no reception. Had to give it up. With my el cheapo prepaid Verizon phone there seems to be reception everywhere.

I would like the telephone police to come in and make the carriers behave and be truthful, or maybe a fee on them to sponsor an independent truth commission which would run ads debunking extravagant claims.

Not legally. So once again, not comparing apples to apples. You will most likely be able to do the same thing on Verizon. But again, that's not the point at all now is it?

Based on Macrumors posts, I'd take issue with the "techie types" moniker. Most people participating don't seem to show a significant degree of tech savvy, unless you're setting the bar fairly low.

Yes, there are very savvy people on here and several whom are Apple execs that see Steve on a regular basis. Was told Steve does read this but he refuses to have is own account.

... then there are times this board becomes a "well dressed and look good for mom and dad" type of 4chan thread.

Uh ? What's illegal about me using the tethering service my carrier is announcing ? Again, I pay 30$ a month for 6 GB of data, with tethering to my computer thrown in at no extra costs.

My iPhone is not jailbroken, it's 100% stock Apple.

Sounds pretty Apples to Apples to me.

Because the only legally offered solution from AT&T is to cancel the unlimited plan and select the DataPro plan for $25/month + a $20 tethering plan (bringing the cost to $45/month for only 2GB of data) . AT&T does not offer tethering with the iPhone unlimited data plan. We don't currently know what Verizon will charge for a 4G tethering plan.

The only apples to apples comparison here is to compare Verizon's laptop plan to AT&T's laptop plan. You are comparing a tethering solution (that doestn't even exist for the price-point you keep mentioning.)

Edit: Just realized you are talking about another carrier altogether.....in Canada. That also is not comparing apples to apples....trying to compare rate plans that aren't available to Verizon customers. But I agree, I'd much rather have your plan. $30/month for 6GB including tethering isn't bad at all.

What would be the significance of the woman looking forward with rings in the background for that Ad? Do people get paid making these things?

Not sure but she has a dirty hot look to her. Oh well I am fine for now with what I have and will not give up my iphone 4 for any speed. :D

The ITU decided last month (if I read correctly) what the think 4G should be. I think that is crap. Where have they been for the last 5 years that everyone has been talking about 4G? Last month, they should have announced what 5G is going to be. Why wait so long?

Apple cripples the phone in the US to stop the tethering. I assume they do it for ATT since other countries allow it.

I always felt, if you pay for 5G of data, who cares how I use it. But that is just me.

I remember an ATT guy saying if tethering was included, everyone would be using all their data. It made me laugh that they hope people only use a small slice of what they pay for.

Uh ? I was comparing my carrier to US carriers and saying the prices in the US were a rip-off. It is very much Apples to Apples. You're getting ripped off in the states.

Why are you even trying to argue it's not the case ? Again, 50$ for 5 GB on an iPad is a rip off even for a laptop plan. My laptop plan is included in my iPhone plan, I pay a single 30$ a month for all my mobile data and it includes 6 GB.

If you're still too dense to understand : The prices quoted are a rip off compared to the prices I pay and cellular prices in Canada are usually one of the biggest rip-offs there is.

Keep defending those carriers while they keep ripping you off.
