I said:

"Right, they should make it a triangular screen, then Apple would become truly innovative again!

Translation without the snark: just because something has been around for a few years doesn't make it 'outdated' and in need of a change."

Then you said:

"The OS hasn't really changed and the phone is still the basic form factor since the original. Where is the innovation?"
Ya and what I said means it is in need of change.

3.5 is still small no matter how many pixels they shove in it.

With all the negative comments, evidently not!

Talk of a taller but not wider screen didn't thrill me initially, but I've kinda warmed to the idea. I'm still reserving judgement until September 12th, though.

RTP.

Well going by everything we've seen so far, I hate it. But it can be a totally different product. But as of now I don't see any reason to upgrade, especially since AT&T doesn't have LTE here assuming the "new iPhone" support it.

The phone isn't even out yet but we started to see commercials :)

All left for Apple to do is sell the phone.

Since forever? What was the first iPhone catching up on? What was the Retina display in the iPhone 4 catching up on?

It won in display quality but still had the worst notifications of any phone out there. We just got a functional notification system, while Android already had it for years. So the iPhone remained behind on that. I also still have to go to pictures to email one as an attachment because my native mail client won't let me attach anything. WHY CAN'T I HAVE SOME QUICK SETTINGS IN MY NOTIFICATION CENTER!? There are lots of things Apple could be doing, but isn't. I love my iPhone, but I can acknowledge that it is not perfect. As far as hardware is concerned, the iPhone NEEDS a bigger screen. Time will tell if Apple is going the right route with a taller 4" display, but there is valid concerns about whether or not it really solves the issue.

there is a need of change.

Give me a reason why you want a radical change (I say "radical" because more screen real estate, LTE, faster processor, possibly better camera, gorgeous refined design, and other possible new features are apparently not enough for you)?

What is the radical change you are looking for? Please don't say "wider screen," as I don't think that sounds especially radical.

No way are they just stretching the screen to add another row and increase real-estate. There has to be some other reason or feature we don't know about yet, such as widgets, or a change to notifications. Else it'd be much easier just to keep everything nice and easy on developers. Sure you can argue that the apps will work just fine with black bars, but in the end you'd have to change the app or you'd look like a lazy developer. Not updating would just be a short term ordeal or you'd shoot yourself in the foot from a business standpoint if you never did make use of the whole screen.

EDIT: I guess there is already support for another row in the code. (forgot about that), but still, surely there is another reason?

Great production MR. I'll be honest though, the Apple-hipster music is beginning to make me feel homicidal.

Still not convinced on the taller but not wider screen. Guess I'll have to hold it in my hand to get a real feel for it before deciding to buy or not.

ill laugh if they make the screen bigger just to add another row of icons o_O

+ why is the amount of icons in one folder still limited on iOS6 and why cant i put the icons anywhere i want.

WOW!!! A 4" SCREEN!!!

It's a darn good thing nobody has ever done THAT before!

Thank you Apple for once again pioneering with such revolutionary ideas!

I sure hope Samsung, or HTC, or Nokia, or Motorola, or any of the other major players who already have 4" screens don't attempt to copy this brilliant innovation! Boy oh boy, I'll sure be sorry for them if they do hyuk hyuk!

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

So by that logic both the Android phones and the iPhone were playing catchup. So what's your point again?

As far as hardware is concerned, the iPhone NEEDS a bigger screen. Time will tell if Apple is going the right route with a taller 4" display, but there is valid concerns about whether or not it really solves the issue.

What "issue"? You mean the issue that you want a bigger screen? There is no reason the iPhone "NEEDS" a bigger screen. You just want one. I direct you to the Galaxy SIII aisle. Why do you care what the iPhone has if it's not really the phone you're wanting?

In my opinion:

The iPhone needs fundamental OS changes in order to open itself up and allow more things. There are thousands of things I can do on an Android and cannot do on my iPhone.

It could get rid of the physical home button and replace it with a virtual one - this has been already proven to work by the likes of Galaxy Nexus, and provides better use of real estate.

NFC (or Bluetooth 4.0) to cater for people who can already enjoy these features and to be future-proof for those people who don't upgrade their phone every year.

I would prefer the use of Micro USB/MHL instead of the dock connector.

There's probably more things that could be changed and improved, but this should be enough for now.

I've purchased every single iPhone model immediately upon release. If the rumors are true, this is the first one that does not interest me. The taller ratio is just not as practical for most media. TV Shows, Books, and Photos are closer to the current aspect ratio and I'm not a big fan of movies with 16:9 ratio because it's too damn narrow. Just my opinion!

Just sold my 4S for a Galaxy S3. Think this would be a disappointing launch for anyone not wearing the blinders...Sorry. So many great phones out there. I agree with others that its a time for a real OS update. I've been running ios 6 for a couple months and although good I just find it boring. There are a couple good features but having a longer phone isn't going to change that experience much.

apple

i look into my undies, 4 inch normal

get real

no sale for me

4.5 might do it

ditching u for htc

With your sense of humor and your lack of confidence in your masculinity, I think the Apple community will be pleased to let you go! :D

By the way, why do Android fans spend so much time hanging around Apple forums? Kind of creepy. ;)

I'm sure we'll get a 2272x1280 (1136x640 doubled) screen in a few years. :)

arn

I don't think Apple will push that. It's already in retina limit, increasing it more is pointless, we will not SEE the difference. Unless the next generation of human species have around 600 ppi retina vision. /JK
