Video iPod Coming Soon?

If you can plug it into a TV, then it would be killer. Otherwise, I say 'who cares?'

I agree. I can't understand the excitement for a product that isn't needed or even wanted.

Do people really believe they can download high-quality full length movies painlessly and then enjoy them on a 2 inch screen while driving, exercising, jogging, reading, and all the multitude of things you can do while enjoying audio on an iPod.

Playback on a TV monitor is the only thing that would make it half way useful.

I'll wait for Blu-ray then I can archive HD movies and play them back on my 72" DLP RearProjection system with 7.1 DigitalDolby SurroundSound. :D

according to AI, the form factor will stay pretty much the same. so i wouldn't expect anything too radical. there is an inherent limitation to how big you can make a screen on an ipod.

selling videos will be the bigger news, in my opinion. it means that apple has figured out a licensing & drm scheme that studios are comfortable with. it may only have limited content to begin with, but it could be the start of something big.

Will it take over the iPod that is there right now? If so, the price will have to be $299 for the __GB..

Intriguing.. This is very intriguing..

This is from the above website.

I, Personally, don't think it's authentic. For me, it's the corners that throws it all off. Their curves are too large, don't look Apple-esque in relation to the click wheel and screen.

Doubt it. It is probably just going to offer music videos which ,if you pay attention to trends, have been tanking the last 5 years. Of course you might get a few movie trailers thrown in for free.

This is a blatent fake. I think it may actually be a garmin GPS device with a Photoshoped click-wheel.

Yea... fake, just like the so called fake Dashboard pictures, and countless other 'fakes' that turned out to be reality...

If anyone can do a video handheld device correctly, its apple. People forget that you don't have to watch content on a 3" screen... as other people have said video out option.. which makes sense - iPod already has that for its photos.

I really do hope its an iPod Video - if you don't like it, don't buy it.

This report is strange.

It quotes "4th Generation"... well, they are already out, the next iPod would be 5th Generation.

"Likewise, sources said that the new player, along with its rumored color screen, will also allow users manage or preview photos on the iPod display or TV screen."

Well, 4th Generation iPods ( aka, iPod Photos) already have colour screens!?

This Appleinsider article, posted today, looks more like a time warp from last year!

I've said it once and twice and maybe three times. So I suppose this will be the fourth time, if not more.

If there is a video iPod release, I will buy one instantly. I have a bunch of tv episodes that have been put into nice mpeg4 files and would very much like to watch a quick episode of the Simpson's or a piece of Curb Your Enthusiasm on my way around the campus. I spend about 45 minutes on a bus every day and being able to watch a quick show would be wonderful and well-appreciated. And I agree with the idea that the movie curtain definitely alludes to a movie-content... something. I'm just hoping for a video iPod.

However, I am concerned, due to video and film copyrights, that a hypothetical video iPod would be disabled of video content playback except for stuff purchased from the iTMS (iTVS?). I want a device that gives me options for content and also video output. A video iPod without video output capabilities would be disabled, in my opinion (and others have spoken this prior to me, so I am just reiterating).

I was centimeters away from buying an iPod nano for myself. A video iPod would put me over the edge.

Sir Steve usually does the 'one more thing...' bit after already announcing something before it....so....

There will be new hardware mentioned during the financial call on the 11th (probably an answer to a 'placed' question about lack of harware updates recently) - this will be what was going to be announced at the Paris Expo. The event on the 12th was always there in the minds of Apple - a big enough gap between the nano announcement and the Paris Expo Keynote.

Just a thought...

And then airlines will have Apple dock connectors in their seats so you can watch what you bring on board as opposed to the crappy in-flight movies most airlines have today (and for cars with rear seat TV for hte kids...etc...

I think the nano was the prelude to the "one more thing".

Perhaps a closer look is in order... The date is May 13, 2004.

Wow, the rumors are especially strong today about a iPod video. :D I have to be honest. The idea of a video-enabled iPod never really excited me much, but now that it is almost a reality, I have to say that I am hyped! I especially want to see what it looks like. Will Apple keep the verticle form facter or move to horizontal for a widescreen display? I have a 3G 30 GB iPod as of right now and I think it's finally time for an upgrade. Just think: an iPod capable of playing music, viewing photos and playing videos? Wow how far the iPod has come! And not to bash Sony or anything, but this could really be interesting to put it up against the PSP. Let's face it. The PSP's video capabilities are amazing and I would love to see how the iPod video compares. Next Tuesday can't come soon enough! :D

Oh and I hope the new Power Mac G5's are still coming. All this iPod talk is lowering my hopes. :(

Good point, I guess I am too excited about the chance of hardware updates as I am sure that Apple at one-time-or-another were in fact a computer company :D

this is incredible. If it has a tv output that would be amazing. I would definetly use it for plane rides and such as well as a majority of the time using it as my music player. It would be cool to be able to rip dvds to it but that brings up a whole new list of copyright problems, oh well, maybe it could work?

The only way I can get excited about this, is if they added text input. If they would do that, I would have my dream pda. If not, then where are my PB updates. :D

Ehh....

I'm always one to be excited about the next iPod (which is always another engineering marvel). But bumping the feature list up another bullet by adding video playback can't be all there is to the story. To make a video iPod work, the real magic of Jobs and Apple will be in content delivery. All the geeks can convert their Family Guy DVDs into MP4 and transfer them onto their PSPs and Portable Media Players. But all the hip teenage folk and 50 year-old wanna-be cool Moms and Dads are the ones that have been making the iPod an icon and buying them by the millions (and we all know these people are still wondering what the difference between MP3 and AAC are).

And even though we find it necessary to have video output on the Video iPod...(and it is necessary)... the ability to hook your iPod up to your stereo was never the selling point... it was your Music Library... in your pocket... TO GO! So I'm not going to stress this as the important got to have feature. What is going to make me LOOK AT my iPod...? As well as listen to it...

Spec Guess

The screen will be 220 wide X 352 long (or the other way around since it will play in landscape mode, of course). This is like two existing iPod (photo) screens on top of each other and has the 16:10 aspect ratio that Apple loves.

Below the screen will be a nano-sized click wheel. Dimensions: slightly longer, same width, and thinner. And yeah, it'll come in white and black.

It will have a 80GB drive on the high end and play music videos from iTunes store, iMovie movies, and videos you import to iPhoto from your digital camera. (iMovie and iPhoto will get updates to add new "Share" feature to export video to iPod format and stick into iTunes for syncing.)

$499. Until shortly after MacWorld (but that's another rumor I'm starting).

(This is only a guess.)

GOING BROKE

Looks like i'm going to have to add another iPod to my sig.

Apple stop making awesome products that i have to buy.

darn. all steve's comments on the lack of a market for portable video are right. Music makes way more sense.

I predict mediocre sales, and competitors coming into the higher capacity music player market.

There goes my hopes for a fifth generation ipod slightly larger and a good bit more capacious than a mini.
