Well my local news station mentioned this tonight about a possibility that Apple may release a video iPod, so let's see what happens in a week....

I have owned ever single ipod model that has come out. Most of the time I buy it the first day. I'm all over this.

I've said it once and twice and maybe three times. So I suppose this will be the fourth time, if not more.

If there is a video iPod release, I will buy one instantly. I have a bunch of tv episodes that have been put into nice mpeg4 files and would very much like to watch a quick episode of the Simpson's or a piece of Curb Your Enthusiasm on my way around the campus. I spend about 45 minutes on a bus every day and being able to watch a quick show would be wonderful and well-appreciated. And I agree with the idea that the movie curtain definitely alludes to a movie-content... something. I'm just hoping for a video iPod.

However, I am concerned, due to video and film copyrights, that a hypothetical video iPod would be disabled of video content playback except for stuff purchased from the iTMS (iTVS?). I want a device that gives me options for content and also video output. A video iPod without video output capabilities would be disabled, in my opinion (and others have spoken this prior to me, so I am just reiterating).

I was centimeters away from buying an iPod nano for myself. A video iPod would put me over the edge.
I haven't read this whole thread, so this may have been mentioned...
I think Steve will make a big point about using a video iPod for home movies made in iMovie. Unless there has been some major deal made with MPAA that no one knew about, a lot of the content needed to fill up an 80 gig video iPod could come from home made movies.

heh, that was quite a laugh. Still, watching a movie is something you do, and listening to music is something you do when doing something else. I think this makes a portable player an entierly different prospect, as portable music can be incorporated into your life, all the time, while portable video is either taking the place of normal video, but now on a fantastically small screen, or taking more time out of your day.... not so hot, at all.

But, I'd be glad to be proven wrong. I just think it wont' have the mass appeal of the ipod, and will only appeal to gadget types/bleeding edge people.

But, again, I'm glad to be proven wrong.

And my main dissapointment is just that I think the 4g ipod looks a bit like a brick compared to the nano and sales are probably hurting a bit, I'd guess. If this is the one more thing, other possible one more things are not it, then. that's my worry.

Thats a good attitude to have :) I brought up that old thread two illustrate two very important points.

1) We are almost exactly 4 years after the original iPod release. The original iPod release was hotly debated, with many MANY doomsday predictions.

2) The very nature (zealots) of the majority of the people here, self included, largely prevents us from being able to accurately predict the overall impact of a new Apple product.

Battery life, people!!!!

I have a 3G iPod that is in excelent shape, and if im lucky,.... I get maybe an hour out of it...

They would firstly and foremostly have to improve the battery life significantly to make this feasable. (dare we say, replacable?) ((most likely not)).

(id buy one!)

I guess my 3G is in excellenter shape, as I still get over 8 hours of battery life...

I think as far as battery life, by it's very nature it would be an iPod that is plugged in a lot more of the time for video playback (on TVs or connected to video airport expresses etc.).

Like a mini laptop that is sometimes completely wireless but more often plugged in...

Doubt it. It is probably just going to offer music videos which ,if you pay attention to trends, have been tanking the last 5 years. Of course you might get a few movie trailers thrown in for free.

Why would Apple want just Music Videos??? There is no money to be made there. Do you ACTUALLY think people are gonna go get this just to put Jessica Simpson's new music video on it? NO. Movies, my friend, will bring in the money. Connect to your TV, computer, and even watch on the iPod. YES, I said WATCH ON THE iPOD.

Well, my 20 Gb 3ed Gen has been getting close on full capacity and will be 2 years old this X-mas, thus no more warranty.

I guess this might make its way onto my X-mas list this year with the new Zelda game and Episode 3 toys

What? I'm 20 and I think action figures are cool. 20 year olds can play with small toys designed for 7 year olds. I, uh . . . SHUT UP!

Yea... fake, just like the so called fake Dashboard pictures, and countless other 'fakes' that turned out to be reality...

Posted by andrebsd of his Toshiba e335 Pocket PC on an other thread. I can also confirm that the image of the "video iPod" has it's graphics from the below device.

I don't doubt a video iPod, but the image above doesn't convince me that "it" is the real thing. To me it looks like a bastardized Pchop of a Garman-iPod-Pocket PC.

I'm probably in the minority but I'd love to be able to rip my favorite dvds into really low res files that would nice on a tiny screen, even if just to listen to the film audio. I actualy have several films as audio mp3 on my ipod.

Actually I do the same, and I don't mind compressed videos. I have compressed most of my DVD collection using my G5. I then copy the compressed files (in a rotation) to my iPod to watch on my iBook at work.

According to the rumor mill, Windows Vista will allow the ability to rip DVDs into Windows Media Video format for playback on a user's machine.

If Microsoft can do this, surely there's no reason why Apple shouldn't be able to do the same. Or is there..?

Imagine this!

It's late Sunday evening, your bored, your not tired. Blockbuster closed at 11. You go on the iMovie Video Store and download a film.

Absolutely perfect.

And as for people saying having video on an iPod would be daft because you can't jog while watching a video.

What about watching on the train?

What about watching a program on your lunch break?

What about that really silly film you made in college that you want to show people?

Sir Steve usually does the 'one more thing...' bit after already announcing something before it....so....
Kinda makes me wonder if this was supposed to be announced with the nano and got delayed. Now Steve's got his chance for a belated "one more thing".

"Do you ACTUALLY think people are gonna go get this just to put Jessica Simpson's new music video on it? "

Well,if you saw her last video then you know they just might. I mean, how many people have 1gb memory sticks for their psp's loaded with nothing but porn? More then we'd care to acknowledge I'm sure. Now that pervs can load their porn collection onto ipods...may make ya think twice about buying a vpod used if ya get my drift.

Second...could the announcement be for a major, hidden NANO feature?

And third. Has anyone noticed that Apple has not updated their 'free' music video offerings in almost TWO months? So,not one music video has come out in the last 50 some days worth adding? Hmmm, perhaps apple is stocking up as music videos will now be pay2own. Well, you can't charge for them after making them free unless you could watch them on an ipod right? Apple can tell the record companies,....no,we aren't gonna charge more for songs BUT we will make you $3 off of video downloads. The record excs were making nothing off of videos so anything they get now is icing. And don't think little 13 year girls and boys wont be downloading Ryan Cabrera and 50 Cent videos by the bucketload. Watching them on school buses and at lunch. And,why take those still pictures of your Disney Vacation to show Grandma when you can show her camcorder video footage instead? Video ipod will be huge.

Video hasn't been huge to this point because nobodys made it easy...Apple will make it easy to get video from point A to point P(od). And,if people were willing to pay $300 for an ipod with b/w LCD that only played music...they will for sure pay $350 on up for one that plays video.

People are paying to watch video on Verizon and Sprint cells with screens no bigger then a gameboy micro. The ipod screen would not have to be increased significantly for short length videos (under 45-60 minutes). However,I find even the psp is too small for 2 hour movies. I got headaches watching Spiderman on it...but it was great for my Def Leppard and Motley Crue videos, South Park and....um,porn.

The one thing I've been hoping for ever since the first iPods had that firewire connector on the top has been the ability to record from an iSight directly into the iPod. It makes such an obvious combination. The B&W screen would have been a bummer, but now the color screen would make a perfect viewfinder... They finally got around to allowing audio recording.

This would make a video iPod a no-brainer for me. Without it I'd be tempted to wait, thinking that it wouldn't be long before they figured it out.

Ehh, has anyone totally forgotten about PowerBooks?

I'd expect a new PowerBook and/or Power Mac update instead of a video iPod update. Why? Because the likelihood of Apple releasing a video based iPod is a very unlikely one during this period of time. Besides, we have the PSP for watching movies. The iPod was developed to listen to music.

If it really uses the current form factor, would you really want to watch movies on it like that? The PSP has an excellent form factor for this. It has a giant widescreen display. The iPod form factor is definitely not too great for displaying video. Small screen? Give me a break. They'd have to develop a new form factor if they were to compete with the PSP.

What I'm trying to say is, would we really want to watch movies on our iPods? I certainly wouldn't. It'd be one of those features you thought was cool at one point in time, but then find yourself not using that much in about a month. It's kind of like some features in Tiger, like automator, etc.

Blah, just my two cents...

Bingo and Bingo.

Music videos would do nothing for me, but hey, maybe the BBC would start video podcasts.

Oh God, have I gotten that old?

Going on the basis of what I've read about the (supposed) specs, this is a visual rendition that I made. Note that in "movie-mode" the numbers for 'time-played' and 'time-remaining' should only appear when using the click-wheel to scroll, pause, etc. The main advantage in normal "music-mode" would be full display of large artwork, and the possibility that the entire album-name will fit into the three-line view. Nice for people like me who use their iPods as desktop-jukeboxes as well... As for actual viewing on the screen.... probably possible, and if you don't mind, then sure. I think that a video-out with RCA (a la iPod Photo cable and special dock) would be necessary for this to be a success.
