...i personally would not be a heavy user of the video playback feature...

You live in Irvine, CA right? I'm betting that you own a car and that when your not driving, yes, you are either mostly at work or at home where you have access to computers, tv's, etc.

However, what about the millions of people in the United States and around the world who spend hours commuting via public transportation? Ever thought that maybe they don't want to spend those hours twiddling their thumbs doing nothing. And the name laptop can be deceiving, as it may be very uncomfortable to try and stabalize, much less utilize a laptop computer on a moving form of transportation.

Of course it's not impossible to do these things, but why do it uncomfortably with even a 12" laptop when something more "handheld" sized, whether 1/2 that size like a mini-tablet or iPod sized would work so much better?

n00b here.

i have to say that i'm getting irritated from reading posts with kids who want HD/Bluetooth/PDA/Cell phone iPods. honestly, it's not going to happen.

Well, as I wrote previously, gadgets pretty close to that already exists. IMHO, I think Apple needs to reinvent the iPod if they want to keep their marketshare in the long run. A video iPod (with all technical/legal limitations) by itself just doesn't cut it.
Perhaps a video iPod combined with a media center and iTVS if done correctly might cut it, but hardly a video iPod alone.

Delicious Video Library...

Hey, I think I remember that a while ago Apple hired one of the wonderkinds who started the software company Delicious Monster, just after they'd released Delicious Library - their gorgeous looking DVD cataloging app.

Delicious Library is a trully beautiful little application which cataloges DVDs, books or CDs and retrieves cover artwork from Amazon and the like. The interface is almost "more Apple than Apple" - in fact it created a firestorm of interface-nerd argument when Ars Techica wrote a very favourable review of it.

If Apple hired him, perhaps this kid has been busy in there building the missing video/DVD importing/managing software which might make all this video iPod/iMovieStore gossip make sense...

I sure hope so....

(just had a look around online to try to find that old story, and couldn't find anything. Anyone else remember this or have I imagined it?)

My Post from 2002

All, I posted this in 2002:

Peeps,

One of my very few posts here. but I figured maybe if we look for what problem a tablet would solve we could be close. Imagine this. A small 5X7 tablet that includes WiFi, Bluetooth and a decent sized Hard Disk. You would pair this tablet with all your computers and cell phones. On it's hard disk would be all your docs and folders. You can use it a standalone device remote control screen, or Home Directory for your paired computers. So picture this. You walk into your office, put this tablet on a charger somewhere and use it as an external disk thorugh WiFi. You're on a train, your powerbook is in your briefcase, but this tablet let's you access it without bringing it out. You're at home watching TV, want to check your mail, this tablet let's you check it through your iMac in the den. In a few words this tablet would hold all your data, act as an extrernal hard disk for your desktop, laptop, digital camera and iTunes. It would also act as a simple browser, MP3 player etc in standalone mode as well as provide remote access for your computing resources at home or the office.. Guess this would be taking this tablet paradigm one step further... Just my 2c worth..

------------------------------------------------------------------------

This device would actually be our Video Ipod, Tablet and Home on Ipod all rolled into one device. Throw in it an ebook capability from the iTMS so you can buy the audio books as well as printed versions for books and periodicals and you have on hell of a media device!!!!

iPod AV content?

Everythings seems to point towards music videos and video podcasts as being the first content available for the iPod AV (if it shows up today). TV shows would probably come soon afterwards with full movies some time after that (if Apple gets enough marketshare to be able to aggressively negotiate with the movie industry).

Personally, what I'd like to see is Apple embrace the short film community by partnering with AtomFilms. If Apple could make the films accessible from the Music Store, the way Podcasts are now, i might have more reason to use the video capabilities of a new iPod. At the very least it would provide a large catalog of readily available and mostly free video content at Day 1.

Unless the TV out from the iPod was really good, I don't think it would be of much use for feature films.

There sure are a lot of Macrumors members from Australia.

I bet I'm the only Tasmanian one though.

Look out MR, there's a Taswegian about.....

UK Refurbished Store

I don't know if it's significant, but the UK Apple Refurbished Store has a lot more PowerMacs than usual today.

I've just ordered the latest model dual 2.0, down from £1349 to £979. There's an eight day build time so plenty of time to cancel if anything mindblowing is announced today.

Movie Store

My guess is Apple is doing with movie pictures what has done with Music in the ITMS. Would you like to buy movies legally online and burn a DVD? Where do you see courtins if not in a cinema?

No no, none of that...

How do you see you guys going in the cricket this year? I'm always struggling to think why a great spinner hasn't come out of Tasmania, someone to take on Warnie. Of all the states you'd think Tassie could produce a good spinner, I mean, you could turn the ball a mile compared to all the other spinners who only have five fingers on their bowling hand....

ha! that's got to be the best inbred joke yet, well done. Acctually made me laugh.

ps. I'm not really into cricket.

edit: i'm more of a family man. ;)

A Video iPod made for a online Movie store would be a bad idea.... unless EVERYONE can access the Movie store, which is highly unlikely given the legal problems they've had just getting music online in many countires.

Even without iTunes store access the iPod is still great - you can load it up with CD's. I cant see that happening with video. Plus, I think you'd need a VERY fast connection to make it practical.

UMD enabled vPod

The soon-to-be released video Pod (vPod) will have support for playing Sony UMD formated movies, along with playing movies from iTMS and from the internal HDD. The vPod will also feature TV-out. You heard it here first ;)

So have the IOC been after you after you posted this picture as your family tree?

Software

Isn't this just a software thing? If the ipod is actually just a hard-drive, offering the functionality to play video isn't the biggest thing in the world, is it? I mean, if video doesn't take off, you still have a media player for photo's and music, so no great loss there.

I'm still hoping for an Apple TV... come on! Give us a flatscreen/hd/PVR/webcam enabled TV that is designed by apple and has the sofrware to match!

Or an Apple set-top box with all of that plus iLife integration.
