*cries in corner*

note: my grandfather in the centre is not black. It's a skin condition.

That's not your grandfather in the middle, it's your brother.

Oh hang on...left, right, right, left - nope, he's your brother and your cousin.

Hey, I think I remember that a while ago Apple hired one of the wonderkinds who started the software company Delicious Monster, just after they'd released Delicious Library - their gorgeous looking DVD cataloging app.

Delicious Library is a trully beautiful little application which cataloges DVDs, books or CDs and retrieves cover artwork from Amazon and the like. The interface is almost "more Apple than Apple" - in fact it created a firestorm of interface-nerd argument when Ars Techica wrote a very favourable review of it.

If Apple hired him, perhaps this kid has been busy in there building the missing video/DVD importing/managing software which might make all this video iPod/iMovieStore gossip make sense...

I sure hope so....

(just had a look around online to try to find that old story, and couldn't find anything. Anyone else remember this or have I imagined it?)

I remember it, and it's a very good idea. The only problem is that the studios would need to allow ripping of the DVDs as they are copy-protected. Perhaps with some DRM tagged on (like FairPlay) so that the (h.264-compressed, of course) movies could only be played on/from the computer and iPod.

That's the problem being Tasmanian, you get so confused!

Everyone's my family!

Everythings seems to point towards music videos and video podcasts as being the first content available for the iPod AV (if it shows up today). TV shows would probably come soon afterwards with full movies some time after that (if Apple gets enough marketshare to be able to aggressively negotiate with the movie industry).

Personally, what I'd like to see is Apple embrace the short film community by partnering with AtomFilms. If Apple could make the films accessible from the Music Store, the way Podcasts are now, i might have more reason to use the video capabilities of a new iPod. At the very least it would provide a large catalog of readily available and mostly free video content at Day 1.

Unless the TV out from the iPod was really good, I don't think it would be of much use for feature films.

One thing people fail to mention, and maybe they are not interested, is the ability to use a iMovie, iDVD, or Quicktime Movie on the Video iPod. It would not be hard to take a QuickTime movie and download it on the iPod. Imagine also the ability to take your home movies and produce them with iMovie (or Final Cut) and then take them with you on your iPod to show family, friends, or other important people.

I could see a great value for ad execs who will carry a commercial clip with them and hook up to a projector, or a TV, wherever they go, and show their latest work to a customer.

I have seen many on here poo the idea of a Video iPod as if it would be worthless if you could not watch TV or a movie. Those would be nice, and could be done if it was compressed enough to not eat up your space. The real sell to me is being able to do the things mentioned above.

Um ... newsflash ... iPod may soon BECOME their main product. Conference call this afternoon said Macs were 60 percent of revenue, iPods were 40% of revenue. iPods have higher profit margins than Macs. Haven't seen all of the numbers but actual profits may be larger from iPods than from Macs.

Yeah, I would like to see the profit margins for Apple's entire line of products. I am sure he iPod's are bringing in a nice pile of cash to be used on development of more little iPod's to bring in more piles of cash...

Not sure about the computer hardware, I am guessing a heap is being spent on the transition development costs...

Although I would love new computers Wednesday with a slightly different form factor as a parting gesture to the G5...this is the last serious update to the G5, enjoy the new form factor.

I must say if we only get iPod stuff on Wednesday (not even noticeable speed and config changes to the existing boxes) then Apple will get another king of gesture from me...one that is easily understood as it only uses one finger...

I can remember when Apple was a computer manufactor that made a cool music player.
After reading this thread it seems that Apple nowdays is a music player manufactor that, according to some obscure and unsubstantiated rumours, also makes computers.
I am getting old...

Amen on both accounts.

The photo features were neither ill-fated, nor did they cost extra $$$. The color screen and extra capacity did.

What extra capacity was there in the 40 GB iPod photo? A hundred dollars for a color screen? Well, for some people it was worth it but not for most of them.

Video iPod

I think since Microsoft has their Media Centers out there, Apple will not only beat them on size, but in features as well. I believe Apple will build a iSight into the Video iPod for use with you Mac or PC, or while you are mobile so you can record video.

I may be delirious from all the hype, but an inclusion of 802.11g and wired ethernet would make sense as well in order to consolidate the Airport Express product into the iPod. This would allow you to use the iPod as a base station, and also you AirTunes/video. No bluetooth, as I believe, since Steve has mentioned sound being poor over bluetooth, this sets up Apple to release wireless head phones, once someone can make a wifi chip small enough.

Somehow I still doubt we will see a video iPod today. Though it would be cool, I could watch Curb Your Enthusiam episodes, or the Baseball game I missed night while I am on the treadmill at the gym ;)

Speculation, but considering the launch event is also taking place at the BBC in London, could a Video iPod be one of the portable devices the BBC won't elaborate on to use with their forthcoming TV-on-demand Interactive Media Player? (www.bbc.co.uk/imp )

I am going to rain on everybodies parade and speculate that the Movie Curtains only refer to the new built in iSight camera which will be available on all Powerbooks from tomorrow.

Definitely a Madonna thing, unfortunately. Why else GB? Isn't that where the biatch lives with her producer husband?

Also, I think this whole thing was cooked up to add a little backbone to the market after what Job's knew were going to be dissapointments with Wall Street. Job's knew weeks ago they were going to miss analysts expectations. Let's be honest, the earnings report was very good. Apple beat their own guidance. It's the analysts and big fund managers that were dissapointed because they had cooked up their own expectations. So a few of these guys start selling. Big deal! The market goes down. It's temporary. The product announcement today can't be enough to satisfy these jerks. They all expect Jobs to produce the Video Grail or whatever. Apple is the sum of it's parts and it's the breadth of it's influence that makes it compelling. Brick by Brick folks. 1% market share growth at a time all the while creating entirely new markets.

The thing to be really concerned about is the Xbox. That's what today should be addressing. Microsoft is going to sell gazillions of these things to it's throng.

Just thought it may be of interest that the PB BTO has gone down from 1-2 weeks to 6-8 Business Days, not sure what that means.
