Yah but what do they really have for their mobile line-up. People love to talk Freescale. No one even knows if FS is even mass producing the theoretical drop in chips for the PowerBook in mass yet. If they are only starting to ramp up production it could be next year before we see mass quantities and at that point say hello to the Pentium M. And let’s be realistic here. Would Freescale even give a crap about pleasing Apple right now? They are going to be phased out in 6 months anyways. I doubt they are going to bend over backwards to get mass quantities of the drop in just to appease Apple.

When the well is empty of water you dig a new well. There is nothing else to do. You can’t make water just appear as Apple can’t just make the G4 just go faster. Which is what is frusterating me. People expect the impossible from Apple. Of course they are focusing on the iPod. Its all they have for now. It’s what is fueling the transition.
Apple has squeezed the crap out of the G4. At best all that is left is menial GPU upgrades (Even though most of the vendors are going PCI-E which Apple would have to do a mobo redesign for.), screen upgrades, and further price drops.
Everyone keeps screeching for some fantastic new hardware from Apple. Well it’s possible, even probable, we will see dual cores DESKTOPS tomorrow, today. (Gah. Need to get to bed.) 2006 is the year of the Apple blitz, and the year the PowerBook and iBook strikes back against the rest of the industry.

Really great post! :)

If Apple did promise a certain order quantity, I do think Freescale would try to deliver. What else actually uses these chips?

I predict...

Video Podcasting/Blogging will explode when the Video iPod is released and become a powerful new form of media worldwide.

I think it (Video Podcasting/Blogging) will give television a run for its money as people start to make the natural progression from (phony) reality shows to actual shows about reality made by real people podcasting from wherever they are in the world. Like cable access on steroids and turned into Ultraman.

A new era of journalism will arrive as news and information will be exchanged directly between people without any sort of corporate or governmental filter, establishing a historical media and potentially social revolution.

Video Podcasting/Blogging will spawn a much needed alternative to the advertisement and propaganda blitz that television has become, introducing new shows and genres of every imaginable kind for all ages, cultures, nationalites, etc. We will see new celebrities emerge from the medium.

The whole thing will be huge and the Video iPod will be the catalyst to set it in motion.

I like your thinking. I think the video-enabled iPod (iPod Video or iPod AV) will spawn new forms of content, but had not thought as far about it as you have. I also think it will bring plenty of mind-numbing content as well from the broadcast industry (but plenty of good stuff too...)

Also, the timing of this launch is very fortuitous with Google's plans for video.google.com...

I'm not interested. Wake me up when its over. Theres so much evidence for it, but so little market. People will buy it, but not for video. It'll be an ill-fated extra like photos. At least they're not doing a seperate line for more $$$ like the photo was. They've learned their lesson.

Who cares if there isn't a market for it yet.

The whole point here is to be working towards an online movie store. Plain and simple. They're the first out of the gates, have a successful solution as with music, and BAM they're on top.

I don't know if you heard about the one studio planning on releasing there movies online by the end of the year, but Apple needs to beat them. Even better, maybe Apple is working WITH them!

$7.99 movie downloads, I WANT!

About 10 hours to go... could this be it? Finally an iPod video? I like thinking about the possibility that current color iPods could be software-upgraded to be able to play back video, but then again, wouldn't Apple simply prefer to sell an all new video-capable iPod? Apple probably wants to sell iPods like mad this holiday quarter as we probably won't see major computer updates for a few months.

I would like to see dual cores tomorrow as well. ......waiting.... Maybe I'll just wait for the event to be over and get all the news at once. Or maybe I can download the webcast of the event through iTunes once video downloading becomes "official". :)

Why...?

Why couldn't an "iMedia" program allow the user to put a dvd of a movie he owns into the drive in order to verify that he owns it, and then allow him to download it pre-encoded for free?

You side-step the DMCA issues, get a user-base going with no investment on their part, and don't force those users to rebuy their movies.

Yes, Apple might take a loss on the network-support end, but it seems they could make it back later if they got higher margins than with songs for purchased movies.

Also... I'd like to see them piggyback with TiVo or DirecTV or someone to provide downloadable tv shows. You pop an extra $5 a month charge with your satellite provider, and you can download the shows from "iMedia" for free.

I will quickly check on here before I go to school. Then I am behind a computer for the first three periods (programming, ICT, ICT). Hopefully will have access to the net during ICT.

Could turn out to be a big morning with England playing Poland.

Go Poland!!!

I think the timing is odd-just as the inventor of the WMA (which the iPod or iTunes can't play) settled with Real (which, last year tried to get their formats and music store work with iPods.

OGG support would be nice-convert to AAC from added to iTunes (like WITH WMA) and iPod's (as Steve was seen viewing at the 2005 WWDC, Wikipedia which has small media files in)

Also, the album and artist titles should scroll on Now Playing screen.

Intel PB's-should include one of these- WiMax or Airport with 802.11n (Intel has a chip for the first, and Asian trials completed recently, the latter most likely ).

I think a true video iPod is doubtful, batteries being the main problem. Decoding video takes a lot of power, the iPod form factor is not ideal at this moment.

I suspect there will be video playback capabilities (for albums that contain video tracks which cannot now be played/downloaded). And I suspect they will introduce a new "digital hub" item which will feature support for video of course. At HD quality.

The BBC are chiming in again
According to media speculation, Mr Jobs may on Wednesday launch yet another new version of the iPod, this time a model that can play videos.
from the tail of a report on Apple's results.

Not the BBC's normal style to quote gossip especially in a business story. But at least it is indirect unlike the Radio 6 announcement. This article was posted before TS backtracked. Will it last the day???

perhaps an hdmi output on the ipod so that you can playback hd content on your hdtv. and a 1280 x 720 screen on the ipod.

To address some various concerns:

1. Ripping DVD's and 20 hour compression times Maybe this happens, maybe not. But Apple will have talked to movie industry about allowing iTunes ripping feature. Keep in mind that DRM will be applied that limits playback to a single iPod, AND applies a 30 to 60 day limitation to it to prevent amassing movies via NetFlix.

That's way too restrictive. I don't see too many people taking hours to rip a DVD only to have the file expire after 30 days or so. They'll just use third party tools to make an unprotected file, like they do already for PSPs and PDAs.

Dish Network came out with their own player a couple of weeks ago and it's been selling well. The only caveat is that it doesn't record HD programming.

Not to mention small PB's, desktops, phones, you name it. It's my stuff, so I get to do what I want with it, MPAA thugs be damned.

ENGLAND! Ah who cares we've already qualitfied ;)
(Good job on supporting the Mighty Reds though!)

The football is my problem - some of my old Uni mates are in town on business and a big group of us are supposed to meet up from 5 for some food drinks and the match.
I just wanna see whats released - and order it!!
Does Henry's Bar (opposite the Ritz) have wireless? ;)

Video is just an added bonus for me - I will use it but its not a deal maker. I just want a smaller iPod with a sharper screen - and a huge battery life.

PS Waiting for these things suck. At least you guys in the States don't have to work a whole day before finding out....

No no, thats not what I'm talking about. TiVos and TiVo-like devices have been around for quite some time now.

What I'm talking about is an arrangement between Apple and, say, DirecTV, where for a small monthly addition to a DirecTV bill, the viewer could download to his computer (from "iMedia") all the shows he could have just as easily recorded with a TiVo, ala paid-Podcast. The viewer could then watch the shows right in iMedia or Quicktime, via an "Airport Express V", or on a iPod video (should it ever exist).

EDIT: Or were you talking about the "PocketDISH"? I immediately assumed you meant the Dish DVR. The PocketDISH seems lame to me, to be quite frank. I'd rather download them in beautiful h.264 on my Mac (or other personal computer) than have to transfer them from my DVR. Its not as elegant as my solution above (although the pricing is less complex with PocketDISH).

WiFi and email support would convince me to buy it. It plays movies, which is (will be) neat, but I have a nano, I have music, I need mobile email with OSX integration. We'll see, but I'm pretty sure that ain't gonna happen for a while.

n00b here.

i have to say that i'm getting irritated from reading posts with kids who want HD/Bluetooth/PDA/Cell phone iPods. honestly, it's not going to happen. the battery would drain from just showing the start up Apple logo on the iPod. and you kids also made me laugh with your "it's not bluetooth, i'm not buying it" crap with the mighty mouse. damn, first generation product. no place to put the battery compartment on the damn thing cuz of the touch sensors. you people and your bluetooth crap.

a vPod? like others before me have said, it is impractical to have one. i personally would not be a heavy user of the video playback feature because i have an ibook, plus, all the music videos i have on my computer, i have seen like a million times already. movies are for the home. with a decent size screen. additionally, i have yet to edit anything in imovie. hell, i don't even go into iphoto all that much.

i could go on and on about why a video capable iPod is not a kosher product, but you kids can stack up on your reading from all the other threads on the subject.

however, knowing myself and alot of you (not personally), we are going to end up whoreing the damn thing (if it even is a video iPod) just because iPod Computer Inc. made it.

I hate the iPod generation.

Well, he should.
The professional folks that buy PBs and PMs as well as Imacs are the most loyal Apple costumers.
Now Apple are selling millions of Ipods, but if one day Apple misses the boat in making them so amazing all the PC people who buy most Ipods will move to the next cool thing and forget about Apple. Meanwhile we the loyal Apple costumers that spent money on Apple during the Gil Amelio's days will continue to support it.
So I say to Steve, keep us happy with great computers.
Hear, hear...
I Couldn't agree more.
It is dangerous for Apples long time survival to focus too much on the iPods.
I mean you can see the convergence of iPod/mobile phone/pda/camera to one gadget. Regradless of how innovative and brilliant the iPod was when it was introduced, I am not so sure Apple is leading the evolution today. Just look at the latest SE P990 : 2mpx camera/4Gb flash/cell phone/wifi/pda... Then add you can upgrade with TomTom such that you have a GPS navi gadget.

I am not so sure a video iPod, given the competition, would make that much of an impact.

Powerbook upgrade confirmed?

Ok I went into an apple store today and asked to put in an order for a powerbook. In doing so I asked if a new one was released in a week could I change my order. He replied... "There is no more stock in Australia. We are waiting for apple to release the new model tomorrow, you can pre-order if you like". Technically I did but didnt pay for it because he said the prices may go down. he will call me tomorrow.

II have read threds before with people saying the stores know nothing. But He seemed very confident about the release and that he knew for certain that there is no powerbook stock left in Australia.

So I would say, its a sure thing now.
