Agreed. But as long as Apple markets it as a MUSIC player first and foremost, then video can be a cool novelty that you can "take or leave" and no harm done.

Yeah, that's true. I'm sure the new iPod will be just as good of a music player, and that's great.

The thing is (and I've been trying to bite my tongue because I've been quite vocal about it recently already), I believe the iPod has some important flaws in its music capabilities. In my opinion, fixing those should be #1 priority before adding complex new features, and I'd bet good money that it doesn't get fixed in this update. The way I figure it, a brand new generation of iPod has a better chance of fixing things with music if it doesn't have any major new capabilities. That's because with new capabilities (video), they've surely concentrated all their software work on the new stuff instead of existing issues.

I've beaten this to death so I'll leave it at that, realizing that 99% of people don't care anyway. I don't want to hijack yet another thread talking about it.

In which case... all the hype and "one more thing" might be something else.

Yes, that's the one shred of hope I'm hanging on to. :D

Any Powerbook updates tomorrow, if any, will probably be lame. PowerMac updates, if any, could be more interesting although I have a feeling it may be more of an update to the supporting architecture for both systems.

Can someone confirm the time for the event tomorrow?

Is it 10 am PST???

thnx

Another iPod is great, but my 4G 40GB is still rockin. I'm holding out for the new Airport Express and something new and cool tomorrow. Anything that has iPod in its name tomorrow cant be that great. (PS: I hope to put my foot in my mouth regarding that tomorrow :p)

Thats what we call waffeling.

I for one hope there will be Video in the next update. It will have to happen eventually to stay compettive but it will also just be plain cool. I would love to download the latest episode of so and so and watch it on my way to work.

And if you really don't use video then just dont scroll down to it in the extras menu.

please say you don't drive to work....

I am just waiting for new ibooks to come out, so that I can buy the current model on sale, and or a better Refurbished item then is currently available.

New iBooks were just released recently. There are many other product lines which need updating, so I don't see anymore iBook updates coming for quite some time, sorry to say. :(

  Well... tomorrow may make it official. Apple is no longer a computer company but a sony want to be. The powerbooks should of had a nice update months ago, everything needed is out there. If they are not updated, one has to wonder what Apples intentions are. I have heard all the talk of how sweet they are now, but that is just rationalizing to avoid the fact that they are TOO long in the tooth.

Steve Jobs release the updates!!

As far as an ipod 'video' is concern - I think the market will be very limited. If that is the 'one more thing' - I think it is a waste of time. Just another revision of an ipod like the ipod photo. Hopefully they will release a surprise tablet, media center - ANYTHING other than just an 'video' ipod.

I hope Apple remembers where it's roots are... :( :(

Video Capabilities? Like Tivo?

Maybe we can record directly from our tv's to it... Like a portable Tivo? If so, my Tivo will be up on Ebay tomorrow. Please APPLE... give me a better choice!

We already had...

As much as a video capable iPod would be cool, I think we need a break from the "iPod Side" of things, we've got some cool products there already. (Though I wouldn't mind a "minor" update to the standards to 40/80)

I wanna see some new things from the "Computer Side" of things. Though I don't personally think they should update the Powerbooks until they're ready for their "intel debut". They could definately use a PowerMac update to stir some things up. Let's see some Dual Core Dual Processor PowerMac BEASTS and shake the ground before we go intel.

Just wanted to put in my two cents

From the ThinkSecret article:

Recent notes suggest otherwise, however, and tomorrow may in fact see the release of a video iPod, while Mac updates may not be delivered until next week.

This is going to be great being able to watch That 70's Show in the back of my quantum physics class! yaayyy I can't wait. (Good thing I sold my Nano for $230 the other day to some guy on Ebay!)

New PPC Powerbooks BEFORE Intel....

Wow Powerbooks may not be the first to convert to Intel - I'd say that Steve should update these at least once more with PPC architecture before they switch over.

A lot of professionals who use Powerbooks aren't going to want to switch over to Intel right away - the software won't all be compatible. Therefore, they're going to want a new PPC Powerbook - not one that's already 9 months out of date!

New PMs

Hint to new PowerMacs… UK and other European AppleStores now shows 7-10 days shipping for dual 2.3GHz. 15" and 17" PowerBooks from 5 days…

Finally, pro upgrades!

I've spent at least 40 hours downloading music videos (from Joy Division to Manu Chao) in the last week since I realized this was coming. I'm thrilled at the possibilities of the iPod video, obviously not for movies, but video clips and iMovies would be very cool. Things that you can watch at arms length, that sound great with headphones and that you never have the time or inclination to sit at home and watch.

I've enjoyed and destroyed both the 1G and 3G iPods so I'm perfectly positioned for the 5th generation. I'm surprised at the level of hostility to this particular rumor, why can't people just appreciate that Apple are expanding the offerings of the iPod line and there's no way they are going to blow it - there will be One More Thing that makes this uniquely desirable.

Well, yes and No

I could see it happening don't get me wrong, I just don't think with rumors of the very small update it would be worth doing, though if they did something better than .03 GHz and DDR2 I'd be all for it myself.

Honestly though, as behind as those Powerbooks are, I do think they should be the first to get updated, they need something bad....that is unless they have some low power Dual Core G4 to tide them over until everyone is ready, then.....go for it.

Rocketboom

Tiki Bar TV would be huge fun, but my guess is it will be Rocketboom. Check out those very worthy video podcasts folks, those and a lot more are already on iTunes.

I'm expecting the 80GB video iPod, Apple Express with video, and iTunes sales of SHORT items like music video, news, weather, BBC short features, and stuff like you can see on Current TV (Al Gore's TV channel featuring short viewer-created content - Gore is on the Apple board, let's remember). No videos longer than perhaps 5 minutes. The sold music videos will have higher quality audio and Apple DRM. And of course there'll be an explosion in free video podcasts.

I love that 70s show. And I think that there is a much bigger market than what people realize. What about home videos? The ability to play them from your iPod directly to your TV is an excellent feature. If they can sync iMovie with the iPod the way they synced iPhoto with the Photo iPod, then what problem do people have? And, pirating (THOUGH I'M NOT ONE), a lot of people are.. They will gobble the item up. AND, i'm sure Apple has some basis to release the video iPod. They must have worked out a way to export DVDs and the sort to your iPod. If that happens, then what are people going to argue about?

I always sell my iPod the day before the new ones come out. Right now for auction is my 20GB U2 Photo iPod. Selling for about $270 with a couple of hours left.

Confirmation Some Video Podcasts are Offline

Following up on the video blog "Tiki TV" mentioned by a previous poster, it seems that some Video Podcasts have been pulled offline this evening on the iTMS. Visits to a few Web sites have indications of new episodes to debut tomorrow. Free content for the Video iPod!?

Check out http://tikibartv.blogspot.com/

One of the better ones and available (tomorrow) in the iTMS Podcast Directory ;-)
