I think the next Mac Mini will look like the Macbook Air's external SuperDrive but thicker.

I think the next Mac Mini will look like the Macbook Air's external SuperDrive but thicker.

Or maybe something almost exactly the same size of the current Airport Extreme, but all aluminum. Good idea though. I agree that the next Mac Mini needs to be all aluminum without any of that old white plastic.

I personally don't think the video is fake - but I don't think this will be the new mac mini. This is probably an old prototype - like that strange prototype macbook air with the black bottom that was being sold on eBay.

Apple is clearly moving to the black/aluminium look and away from the white/aluminium. This was probably a speed bump planned for 2008 that was axed.

Now that Apple has the 24" LED display with mini displayport and a POWER CORD built into it, I don't think they would continue with the proprietary AC adapter for the mini. It would be much cleaner with the single cable from the display to the mini for both video and power, and Apple strives for this kind of simplicity and consistency.

The dual display ports using differing technologies seems like an unusual choice, and instantly limits one from using dual 24" LED Displays - Why would Apple do that, they would love someone to buy two of them. Also it's strange considering that if they just put in dual mini-displayports, they could easily drive the two LED displays, and with the appropriate adapter cables (Which I guarantee would not be included), you can get DVI or VGA from both ports.
Using two differing ports is inconsistent and not something Apple would do - hence why they stopped shipping firewire 400 ports on their products - because firewire 800 is 100% backward compatible with 400 with an adapter. Same situation here - mini displayport is 100% backward compatible.

Definitely in the realm of what Apple is moving to.

I believe the rumored pic and video is definitely the new macmini. It is the same size and adds the ports that Apple is using on the recent macbook and macbook pro update. Five usb ports seems a little much. I have a feeling this is a just a taste of what is to come from Apple. Due to the recent pull of the 20 inch display. Apple could be ready to announce a newer 20~22 inch model with the mini display port and this macmini next tuesday. With the imac update following a week or two later.

Just my two cents...

I believe that this is real. It has come to my attention that Apple doesn't care about the Mac Mini, so why would they go crazy on the design.

I still think it looks very real :) I hope it ends up being true!

I'm surprised though that nobody has yet named the MacBook Wheel video as another example of a video of a product that looks real and obviously isn't. I know this one wasn't meant to fool people but still it is very well done.

why hasn't anyone commented that this isn't the same machine that was in the 'leaked' photo? it's pretty blatant. compare the ports:

Surely people aren't THAT unobservant.

I posted the first picture. It's a joke. I put from 9to5 above the picture. It's from that website and is posted as a gag on there.

I was surprised that no one here caught onto it earlier though...

Mockup

Sure I'm skeptical, but to all of those who blatantly denounce it as a fake, how on earth do you fake this?!

And sure you can say photoshop, but who, that is that good at photoshop, is going to waste their time, when they could be making money doing other design work for clients?

I mean, coming from an ID background, this wouldn't be the toughest thing ever to pull off. A little spare time, spare parts, some decent drill & dremel skills and a small piece of white acrylic? Doable.

I'm not saying it's a fake, tho I'm definitely leaning that way. I would just be highly surprised if Apple didn't do an external overhaul for the next Mini tho.

I suppose there are the possibilities that this is either an in-house frankenstein that escaped - which I find a difficult morsel to swallow, or a baseline - (which is possibly more unlikely?) they did do it with the MB, but how would someone have gotten a hold of one but not the other? I know Apple likes to keep the departments separate, but two different Mini teams? It just seems if you had the chance to grab a new Mini... Maybe no one would notice if one of the old models was missing?

This is a tough call, but if this guy faked it himself, props, great craftsmanship!

edit: I forgot about the Chinese knockoff possibility - but why is he not picking it up? Why is the light so low? Eh. This is fishy.

I thought the original posting was a gag.
I thought everyone acting like it was real were being silly.

If it was serious in either case, that's seriously sad.

I suppose the only thing you can say now is that it appears the pics weren't fake after all. ;)

seriously something weird about the "pressed down to turn around" show. like it's a mod or hollow mock up...

Gonna call BS on this one.

Someone has gone to great length to generate a lot of buzz on sites like this but I don't buy it. The Mini has an aesthetic that fits in with previous generation white plastic/metallic look but we've long since moved on to the aluminum/black plastic/glass thing and I just have a gut instinct that Apple isn't going to introduce a new Mac Mini without a visual makeover. This looks like the same old box with a few different ports in the back.

So, I say this is fake.

The video seems to be pretty convincing. Far too much work to mock up what amounts to just a $600 dollar computer. Kind of like counterfeiting $1 dollar bills if the person in question went to the great lengths to make such an authentic looking mock-up.

I seriously doubt that someone would take that much time to create a fake Mac Mini. Think about it. What does he have to gain from it? He is not hosting the picture on his site, its spread to rumor sights everywhere. I think its real. So what if its not black/aluminum/glass. Not all their products are like this. Airport Extreme? Time Capsule? They all have a close footprint. Maybe they want to keep them all the same so they look good stacked? IT IS REAL

Fifteen minutes of fame. You obviously haven't seen any mockups before this one. MUCH more work has gone into trying to con people.

They transmit Wi-Fi. They CAN'T be aluminum.

They all have a close footprint. Maybe they want to keep them all the same so they look good stacked?

Except the Mac Mini's is completely different.
