Fifteen minutes of fame. You obviously haven't seen any mockups before this one. MUCH more work has gone into trying to con people.

Yes, for real fame or fortune, or at least on something worth far, far more. I can make a mock-up of a fake Hallmark card or children's Wilson football and post it all over the internet anonymously, but what would the motive be?

Hmmm

Alright,

First impression brings my original statement right back to center stage...

WHAT'S with the lame casing? Surely, going through so many new designs, this would have at least been treated with SOME respect and had a facelift ? I mean it's almost 600 days ago this baby was reworked, now all they do is stuff it with new bits?

Also, does anyone know when the new MacOS X 10.6 is expected?

So yeah, no awesomeness to this machine, no sexiness in design and no MacOS X 10.6?

Hmm, it better be cheap... because you see... the rest of what's inside of it will not be that spectacular. And suddenly the MacMini is nothing more than a great idea, that just became passé.

Oomph it up will ya!?
:apple:

They transmit Wi-Fi. They CAN'T be aluminum.

Except the Mac Mini's is completely different.

I have seen plenty of mockups. Most of them are just pictures though. Name 10 mockups that were actual videos showing a 360 view. The macbooks are aluminum. They transmit WiFi. What if you want to use a Mac Mini in a discrete place. And you have an Airport. Are you going to put them in two seperate places? No. All of your points have failed. Good day sir

Why do hackers make the majority of viruses??

To piss people off! XD

Big difference, as a successful virus affects millions of computers worldwide, makes CNN, and can lead to billions in losses to business.

This mock-up, if it is one, does not show much except a few more ports? So what? Many PCs have more ports than Macs.

I seriously doubt that someone would take that much time to create a fake Mac Mini. Think about it. What does he have to gain from it?

No offense, but see that "macrumors newbie" under your user name? ;)

There have been many, equally elaborate fakes in previous years--and yes, even videos.

http://guides.macrumors.com/Gallery_of_Apple_Mockups_and_Fake_Products

He is not hosting the picture on his site, its spread to rumor sights everywhere. I think its real. So what if its not black/aluminum/glass. Not all their products are like this. Airport Extreme? Time Capsule? They all have a close footprint. Maybe they want to keep them all the same so they look good stacked? IT IS REAL

The rumors are also pointing to a new display. Chances are the displays are going to follow the iMac/iPhone look which means this so-called new Mini in this video would stick out like a sort thumb. It just doesn't make sense and doesn't follow Apple's previous approach of giving the consumer-oriented boxes a similar design.

Sorry, friend. Not trying to spoil the fun. Enjoy it if you want, but do so at arm's-length. You'd be surprised the extent people have gone to previously to push fakes (check the link above.) I don't get what motivates them but they exist. And this video is from one of them. Bet on it.

Then let me offer you the other side of the coin, just for arguments sake.

Suppose the poster actually is from Apple Cupertino HQ, had this mock up of a MacMini sent out to FOOL the fans and media. What purpose? Well, we've been quite underwhelmed by Apple's lack of oomph lately and so, ANYTHING that would beat the circulating video and images of any potential MacMini with somewhat lackluster looks and features will only make whatever they have SO MUCH BIGGER and more amazing.

So what would the motivation be for such an attempt to throw off the press and people? Well Steve isn't at Apple at the moment so who ever is going to present the next show, will HAVE to have something that's worth mentioning and worth being remembered for... Like "NEW GUY/AMAZING MAC MINI".

This would ease his way into the hearts of the Fans and Media. BUT... that would be wishful thinking on my part, because I still wish a MacMini in a new casing that's like an iMac, a tad thinner, with actual aluminum casing with a black top and a white apple logo...

Hey.. we can all dream can't we?

;)

I call fake - I just don't believe after all this time that fugly thing is what they'll pull out.

I've learnt not to expect too much from Apple, but hey, I still think they're a capable outfit when they want to be too! ;)

Well done though on a good build/mu.

Can't wait to see the real deal.

I don't understand why the lead in is so skeptical. Being skeptical of yesterday's photo I can understand, but the effort to doctor a video or build a mockup is too much for the prankster to have bothered with. I think it's real.

Even if it is a mockup, all those people who said 'photoshop' about the image are wrong.
In fact, it was a physical item, and not computer generated lol

not a fake, just an old prottype

I agree with some if the other posters who have thought it is likely a 2008 prototype that never reached production, rather than something that would be released now.

In regards to a design makeover is anybody really expecting/wanting more than simply changing the top from white to black glass, and maybe making it a bit thinner? I would be happy with that as long as the internals were at least equal to the white macbook + firewire.

I would even be happy with a low specced ion based model (the new nvidia ion platfrom, not the old/current one), as long as the price was closer to $399 than $499.

upper case is replaceable

"I wish the Mini's aesthetics was reworked to the new black design motif."

I took mine apart last month to upgrade the hard drive. The case is just a thin plastic shell. Nothing to it. It would be trivial to have a different case made up, in any style you like.

I think this is a design prototype. If Apple is keeping the same external size, it would be fine to use an existing case. And good for Ive's design team, as they can keep the real case secret that much longer. The ports on the back are far more critical to get right. Note the overall size of the back panel has not changed.

If this really is the new mini, it will be very tempting. No way to add USB 3, but I could repurpose it in a couple of years, and get a replacement.

I think that they need to do away with the power connector on the Mac Mini. They should either go with a standard connector like what is found on most desktops (including the iMac) or they need to use the Magsafe connector. I used to have a Mac Mini (G4) and I hated the power adapter because it felt loose like it could fall out at any moment.

Whats the point of magsafe connector on a desktop?? you would need to include a battery in it then!

Yes, and its not heavy enough to have the amount of static friction needed to stop the applied force from a kick or someone tripping over.

Ah, another submission from Apple's disinformation department.

The updates must be close!

The process is always the same, leaked photographs, mock-ups, then Bam!

The real Apple update. The beaver likes real Apple updates.

I saw a total of 2 fakes that had videos. Not very many. Sure your argument still holds up? I agree that there have been tons and tons of pictures but videos are pretty rare are nearly convince everyone.

The iWalk video had far more people convinced than this Mini video. Trust me. That's a notorious fake. Large numbers of people were actually quite angry afterward. This Mini video is child's play next to that.

Anyway, I'm not going to carry on a lengthy argument with you. You sound like you really want to believe this Mini is the real deal. Who am I to stop you? No reason to expend a lot of energy trying to convince you otherwise, but keep in mind--you now have seen several instances of equally elaborate fakes from the past. Make of that what you will.

As far as I'm concerned, there's no reason to believe what's shown in the video is the next Mac Mini. And just going on Apple's past and the recent rumors about the Mini, it actually doesn't make sense that the next Mini would look like that.
