Ideally, all governments would be making these, giving them to residents, then mandating their use. But, for those countries that aren’t doing such things, I’m glad Apple is taking tangible steps to protect the health of staff and customers.

Who did that? None of the comments here have politicized mask wearing so far. Some are funny, some complimentary..

Personally, I'm not interested in one that's not a "Woz" signature edition. And I can't wear it at work. We're mandated to wear the KN95 issued anyway....

It's because this thread has been homed in the "Political News" forum...

Nothing says "pretentious" like making your own mask because the tried and true, certified ones, you know, are just too simple. I am waiting for a parody video narrated by Jony Ives...

Here's the script, people. Make it happen.

Jonny -- We have reinvented, reengineered the mask. We've completely changed the way a mask works. It's incredible. The simplicity of its design. Engineered with just two straps, never seen before in a mask this size, delivers 30% better tactile strength and uses a single piece of rubber string. It's simply amazing. The mask itself has been crafted on a nano scale, engineered to allow up to 20% more air to reach the user's lungs. There has never been anything like it before. It's incredible.

(Tim appears out of nowhere, startling Jonny who is still wistfully glancing into the camera murmuring the word "amazing" several times)

Tim Cook -- Thanks, Jonny. The Apple mask launches today at just $99.99 and for the pros who demand the best, we've included adjustable nose pinch, starting at $199.99.

They are (as always) trying to save money.

It's simply cheaper for Apple to produce the masks themselves instead of buying them from external companies who put on percentages.

BS. They have also manufactured 10’s of Millions and given them away. So, no it's not a money saving move.

The OP's whole idea was that it was sad that it was politicized, when no one posting here so far had politicized the topic except the OP.

The decisions regarding the homing of threads, or the discussion of that topic, is above my level, and I engage in no such activity. I don't discuss such things. I simply see the story on the front page, look at it, see that people said it was sad that it was politicized, while no one else posting in the treat politicized the topic at hand and point that out.

The clear mask should be available for those who need it to work like sign language translators. Otherwise it’s all about plastic again...

I had to go to a store a couple of weeks ago and interacted with a member of staff wearing one of these masks. She was wearing glasses and I asked her whether she had any issues with them fogging. Her reply was that this mask has been perfect and she's had no problems at all with her glasses fogging up while wearing it.

For that reason alone, I wish Apple sold these to the public!

Apple doesn't produce anything. Apple is a design company and also a software company. Actual engineering comes from partners in China. In this case, the filter technology and material science come from Chinese companies. Apple only designed the shape and picked the protection level.

This is Apple doing what Apple does best. Take an existing product with a frustrating user experience and proceed to deliver a more polished experience based on their expertise with design.

Don't like the signal this sends. The mask requirement is supposed to be temporary. Designing your own mask with fancy packaging makes it feel more permanent than it should.

And its for their employees and to keep them sanitary upon the employee recieving them. I don't see what your issue is. They are not selling this to the public and even if they were they should be boxed up the same way as to keep them sanitary
