It's only laughable if you make an assumption as to what he was referring to. Why would you assume "secrecy" was about parts leaks.

What was the most publicized secrecy issues Apple had the last couple of years? Not parts leaks, the average consumer is clueless to these. The biggest stories were prototypes left in bars. Seen any of those lately? Didn't think so.

In my book, seems like Cook has addressing the biggest issue Apple had the past couple of years.

The only thing he specifically did mention re: secrecy was deals to purchase companies. That's been a bit more hush hush as well.

The fact is that there are way more leaks now than ever before in Apple's history. Yes, it's due primarily to their popularity. Controlling leaks, including parts, has always been a part of the company's secrecy M.O.

Just because these parts aren't showing up in a bar doesn't mean Apple is happy with them. I also think more of the general public knows about these than you give them credit. The news of leaks isn't just appearing on Macrumors. They're also popping up in mainstream news outlets like ABC:

Even my decidedly non-techie in-laws know that the next iPhone is supposed to have a 4" screen.

Interesting catch. I see them as Avenir. I did read some where that they were changing up the font to this. Would make sense. Wish he put them in his ear. They look uncomfortable, no? There was a photo on 9to5 mac of the writing on the cord. It said designed in California made in Vietnam. What company in Vietnam would they use for manufacturing?

Foxconn apparently

I bet these will be crap, just like their predecessors.

Why?

Because if you have good earphones, you'll quickly learn to recognize how horrendous the quality of music is that you get off the iTunes store. I'm not talking about some audiophile "zomg my headphones increase instrument separation" stuff here, I'm talking about honest to god quality difference that you can blind A/B test and get the same answer every time.

I used to use Apple earphones. I used to believe that Apple somehow knew what they were doing in the audio department (they haven't, since they stopped using quality DACs in their equipment). After I somehow burned out 5 pairs of Apple earphones (never exceeding 50% volume in iOS), I decided that enough was enough and splurged on a pair of Shure SE535s.

Suddenly, all my music is new again- like nothing I've ever heard before. Listening to music is enjoyable, not just something you do to block out ambient noise. Everything is so clear you can close your eyes and just let yourself get submerged in the music, as if you're there in the studio while they're mastering it.

And you quickly learn to recognize which tracks are ripped as lossless (using ALAC or FLAC), and which tracks are downloaded from the internet off the iTunes Store. The CD rips sound fantastic, the downloaded stuff sounds like ass.

With proper earphones, I've actually gone back to going out of my way to buy and rip CDs. I avoid digital downloads because the quality is absolutely horrendous.

But you don't notice this unless you've got good earphones...

Which makes me wonder why Apple would bother producing anything better then their predecessor units. If your headphones suck, then there's no difference between FLAC and MP3/MP4 because the headphone drivers can't reproduce the level of quality for you to notice it. This makes me think that these new headphones will suck on purpose, otherwise people might pick up on the fact that the iTunes store is selling lossy garbage- and that'd make Apple look bad.

My non-techie friends are clueless unless I tell them.

You're missing one MAJOR detail. IF Apple was so concerned about the secrecy where these parts leaks are concerned, they'd simply send a take down request and follow it up with a C&D if it was ignored. This proves in my mind that Cook clearly wasn't referring to parts leaks when he made that statement.

he said uncomfortable, which they do look indeed but then again inears already hurt my ears so

Go back and read the second half of that quote. 2 statements were made; one regarding comfort and another regarding aesthetics.

If apple sends C&D letters then it proves the legitimacy of the Leak. Not saying anything at all makes it more mysterious as to what the product is...

these headphones make so much sense to me.

and i don't see why they would be uncomfortable? they are the same in-ear shape as the conventional earphones, but with the speakers more appropriately integrated in the design.

I don't like buds either. I love my in-ear headphones by Ultimate Ears and using comply foam tips with them. Excellent sound while also comfortable.

I've used a few soft tip buds before, and they still make my ears ache. Not as bad as the full on plastic deals, but I still felt a little raw after using them for half an hour or so.

Maybe I got little ear holes or something.

Good point, but they do send them. If they really cared here, they would here as well.

I just don't believe that a sourcing expert would be so clueless to think he could stop leaks with a distributed source of suppliers like Apple has. That's why I don't think he ever did. People just assumed incorrectly.

The opening on the sides? You mean this part? That's where the speaker is, I would guess.

Alright--then if that's the "front" (part you stick in your ear), there's still an opening on the (now other) side. I figured that one, the one you see in the picture, was the part you actually put in your ear (it appears to have a metal grating like many earphones), but I guess I don't really know.

"We're going to double down on secrecy."

-Tim Cook

"Challenge accepted."

-Parts suppliers
It's more like:

Apple: we're doubling down on secrecy
Suppliers: well, we're doubling down on leaks

I see we're still calling it iPhone 5.
it is not out yet, so yes, until it comes out there has to be some simple, generally agreed on term to call it.
HA! Beats and quality don't belong in the same sentence.

I find them poorly constructed for how much they cost.

I think he meant "beats" as a verb, not as a brand name. Anyhow, the most atrocious thing about Beats by Dre is not the quality of construction but quality of sound (or lack thereof) for the price. A pair of $30 Sony MDR ZX300 + appropriate EQ setting will sound as good or better as $220+ Beats - that's a sad reality.

To make air flow in one direction, you need a vent on the other side. Otherwise your driver is fighting a vacuum. This is my uneducated guess.

Never been able to wear any type of in the ear phones without being painful. Doubt these will work for me. I use cheap outside the ear phones when I'm mobile. When I want to listen to some serious sounds I have a pair of $400 AKG's. ;)

...

So these earphones are smaller ? and all in one ?

Is this kind of the "thing" now ? Where everything from Apple, not just computers, but now includes any accessories are now "though away" ?

Being smaller, would also must mean the cable can break much more easily...

The current style earphone fall out of my eyes,,,,,,, i wonder how i'm gonna cope with the new ones if their smaller...

Plus, it looks like the old style is still the best as is has open grill for sound, rather than now only have a tiny piece in the corner for sound to come out off.

Thank goodness they had an english description, as i can't understand any other languages.

Same story here, until I found Sony MDR EX35LP. You may want to give them a try. They're relatively inexpensive (~$15).
