I truly hope Apple will use Yosemite as the OS for this tablet. I presume the 12" iPad would be a competitor to Microsoft Surface line. Nobody needs a 12" regular iPad without making it as useful as a laptop.

Sorry, but serious work requires serious tools - you don't edit film or create effects or build complex 3D models with a tablet. It lacks processing power, GPU acceleration, storage (lol you want to do multi-GB transfers over wifi to a render farm?).

Tablets = casual use, they're fine for it and there's nothing wrong with that. Tablets in the work place are fine for app testing, documentation/taking notes, etc. There are things tablets are good for in the work place.

Have you tried to fill out a spreadsheet or code something or do web work or edit a film that's a little more complex than a home movie for your parents? Hell, typing an email longer than a paragraph is a chore and a half on a touchscreen. Touch input isn't an improvement, it'll slow you down and lack precision on top of it.

There's a lot of work required for tablets to become pro-grade devices than just making the screen/resolution bigger.

have you tried the surface pro? the new one? with all its shortcomings, it feels much more competent than an iPad air by a long shot. i don't think you're speaking for many people other than those with limited imagination and an inability to grasp others' workflows. there's plenty in between iOS iMovie and rendering a pixar feature.

I don't get the point of it. Some are saying that it's a pro tablet for those who need an OS X tablet with a stylus. But Apple clearly said that they won't merge OS X and iOS , and we all know what apple thinks of the stylus since the intro of the original iPhone back in 2007.

Being an Apple follower and fan for a decade, I can honestly tell you that they always end up doing what they say they won't do (example iPhone screen size).

Woah, that iPad is huge! If this is just a bigger iPad that runs the same iOS as the other iPads, then what's the point?

I guess Apple needs a 12" tablet on the market. This will give us more options. You will be able to choose as you like: 7.9" (small), 9.7" (medium), or 12.2 (large).

Hmm, I kinda like this new Apple. We will have options!

Very smart to focus on producing the iPhone 6 instead of this new iPad design. There aren't enough people needing to upgrade their iPads yet to make this launch a huge success. But, although my iPad 3's are still working fine, they will get replaced about 3 or 4 months after the new 12" is released. (Need to give them time to correct significant new-product bugs)

Im reading these comments and I am astonished how shortsighted they all are! This is the first step in the convergence of the laptop and the tablet, nothing could be more exciting. This will run a version of OSx/iOS and be quite powerful. Laptops as we know them today won't exist in a few years and this is the first step. You people need to open up your minds a bit more, sheesh!! You are embarrassing yourselves.

if it switches between the two (or just offers OS X) there's no 'merging' to be found. and the 'anti-stylus' thing was born of jobs' (brilliant) marketing techniques. he wanted 'your natural ten styluses' to be the selling point. it didn't mean all of apple was against styluses forever. he was a salesman and he often said things for certain effect - or even misdirection aimed at competitors.

As long as it is The Thinnest iPad Air Plus We've Ever Made, I will buy it.

Thinner is everything. Everything is thinner.

Have you seen the Geekbench scores of an Air2? And a larger iPad doesn't just mean more screen space, but more component space as well... More Power! Tablets are catching up with laptops fast and in some cases could be considered superior to a laptop! Especially for design! You can hang on to your last decade ideals... I will move with the times!

Couldn't agree more:)

here we go again with this stuff again. I understand the demand for the large ipad, but me I would rather have a solid mac mini or a nice quad core desktop (not a mac pro) with great specs with an i7 processor around $2200.00 or so... I mean cmon apple!!!

Yeah, we know, ARM is catching up, but it hasn't yet and professional apps don't run on ARM architecture. They could, but for now they don't. Those benchmarks mean little if the device is stuck on iOS.

If they simply make it bigger, it will not be successful.

It's not just Apple that will make a larger iPad successful, it's there army of app developers! Regardless of OS, apps on this thing will be out of this world... You can bet your bottom dollar on that!

So you're saying pro apps can't be developed for iOS? Or are you saying that developers won't take the time? Because it only takes one giant to make a larger iPad an industry standard! For example if Adobe developed and released a pro lineup for this thing other companies would follow! And ARM at this point is as powerful as laptops were only a few years ago! Also, who knows how far Apple will push ARM with the A9/A9X custom chip, which will also incorporate the new PVR GPU that is said to be literally twice as fast as that in the A8X ...

Big?

I remember back in the 90s I read two reviews of laptops. In the first one the reviewer stress how very big he thought the laptop was. In the second one half of the review was about how ridiculously large it was. The first laptop was 14 inch, the second was 15 inch.
Now we live in an era where people do more and more on their smartphones on tablets and less on laptops or desktop computers. And we think 12 inch is big? Well....

I've mentioned this in another thread about a month ago, but here is a mockup that I made. I think that the Pro might have a 16:10 ratio. It makes 12.2" not as huge. Furthermore, 16:10 is what MacBooks generally use and it's better for productivity because it gives you space for toolbars on the sides without making it unwieldy. I think back when I first made this mockup I calculated that the 16:10 ratio reduces the surface area of the devices by around 7% compared to 4:3 at the same 12.2" diagonal. If developers are going to have to redo their apps for the Pro anyway, then changing the ratio doesn't hurt as much. Existing iPad apps can still run letterboxed, like Apple did on the iPhone 5 when there weren't any optimized apps yet. And as I've mentioned in other threads, I still think it's weird that the rumored retina MBA is supposed to also be 12", leading me to wonder if this is some type of convergence devices that snaps into a keyboard frame and morphs from a touch based to mouse based UI when connected.

I think he's saying that, at this point, the iPad could be as powerful as it wants but it won't have much use. If that changed, then that'd be great for competition. It hasn't yet, though.

Then why not just buy a laptop? Why would Apple go after Surface when they've been quite clear in how they view what Microsoft and their OEMs are doing:

Commenters are missing the point...

I like the current size of the iPad 9.7 for personal use. it is however too small for sheet music, text manuals, developing applications (via RDP). This iPad should not be called the iPad Air. It should be called the iPad Pro for it is intended for professionals. The iPad Air should be for consumers who do not need the extra real estate. I am waiting for the iPad Pro preferably 12.9 but I can work with the 12.2. Now Apple needs to add to the Pro version MOUSE support (for RDP) however they may be afraid the iPad Pro may cannibalize MacBook sales. I am not getting the iPad Air 2 and waiting for the iPad Pro to come out.
