I just put my finger to my HP laptop screen and without applying much pressure I got distortion. Same thing with my flat screen TV. I've been using my iPad Air 2 for almost a month and until it was pointed out today I never noticed this distortion.

Now put your finger on the back of your laptop and tv! Does it still distort?

Great, a 12 inch app launcher.

I don't know why this is referred to as the ipad "pro" by some. There is nothing "pro" about an OS designed so that grandma doesn't get confused.

And just how do you know what OS this device will be running? Have you been involved in the development?

A 12.2" ipad pro would still be portable. It's a lot smaller than the 13" & 15" MacBooks, and people lug those things around.

Size is not the issue.

The big question, is will it truly deserve being called an ipad pro? For people to buy an ipad that size, it needs to really live up to the pro label for people to choose it over a laptop.

Apple was responding to Windows 2-in-1 devices and the notion that they need to do something similar. Seems to me what Apple announced at WWDC gives a good indication of where they're heading and I don't think it results in an OS X tablet.

true - i remembered reading that article, i should have actually reread it. sounds dismal for the OSX-ipad prospects, but i'm going to keep on thinking this is just misdirection. apple is the type of company to just call it something else and claim it's 'better than a 2-in-1 so it isn't one' - and i personally think inaction would be a serious mistake. should stakeholders expect all tablets competing with apple to surpass them while they sit back and do nothing? i feel strongly that the surface pro was the beginning of the 'end' of consumer tablets. the iPad air will be like game gears are to playstations - perfect for the convenience-seekers they cater to so well presently. but a true pro apple tablet is overdue at this point

Then why not just buy a laptop? Why would Apple go after Surface when they've been quite clear in how they view what Microsoft and their OEMs are doing:

To be fair Apple has made a lot of things "quite clear" only to turn around and do the exact thing they disparaged. I think we all understand it's just them marketing to what they are selling at the time. Larger phones and smaller tablets come to mind. Companies do it all the time so it's not exclusive to Apple.

If Apple produces a larger iPad with a sweet detachable keyboard (even if the keyboard is 3rd party), I am all in. As for why not just buy a laptop? Some people want more. If I can have a tablet for when the mood hits me and it can function as a laptop when I need it to do so... I know it's a tired trope but Apple might just be able to Shut Up and Take My Money. I'm already getting an SP3 for Christmas. But I like tech for tech's sake. 12.2" of iPad would fit right in. As long as my wife doesn't find out.

Sorry, but serious work requires serious tools - you don't edit film or create effects or build complex 3D models with a tablet. It lacks processing power, GPU acceleration, storage (lol you want to do multi-GB transfers over wifi to a render farm?).

Tablets = casual use, they're fine for it and there's nothing wrong with that. Tablets in the work place are fine for app testing, documentation/taking notes, etc. There are things tablets are good for in the work place.

Have you tried to fill out a spreadsheet or code something or do web work or edit a film that's a little more complex than a home movie for your parents? Hell, typing an email longer than a paragraph is a chore and a half on a touchscreen. Touch input isn't an improvement, it'll slow you down and lack precision on top of it.

There's a lot of work required for tablets to become pro-grade devices than just making the screen/resolution bigger.

No one's saying that a tablet is going to supplant a workstation. But it can be a valuable tool to throw into the workflow.

I just put my finger on the back of my Air 2 and it didn't distort. In order to get any distortion I has to apply A LOT of pressure - something I never do with my iPad.

10 years ago, who was thinking a phone could do what a smartphone can do today? Never say never...

How is the Surface or any of these Windows 2-in-1 devices good tablets? Are they ever shown without a keyboard or in portrait orientation? I guess it all depends on how one defines a tablet. For me a tablet is something thin and light; something that is very portable; something that I can curl up on my couch or in bed and read a book or play a game on. IMO 2-in-1 devices are OK laptops but not very good tablets.

Your definition of a tablet seems to be primarily as a consumption/light work device, and that's fine. If it works for you, it works for you. But that's not the only thing a tablet can be.

Just like anything, there are multiple use cases. Tools that work better for some people. Some people want a computer they can let them directly interact with the screen to do their work. This is what the SP3, and hopefully the iPad Pro, are good for. They might not make for the best curl-up-on-the-couch tablets, but they're not really mean to be. They're addressing another market entirely.

it is a tablet. you dock it to a keyboard (but you don't have to curl up with it in bed at this stage);)

note the tablet-ness: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAGgPrVjA3A#t=6m45s

too big for anyone 'not looking for a big consumer-oriented tablet.' sure. but that's not everybody.

I fine it hard to justify the iPad Air Plus if all it will do is split screen multitasking and add an extra row of icons.

If you're going to make something that big you want to take advantage of its size.

A 12" iPad is just a consuming device and nothing much is going to be different from all the other iPads.

Of course it will be made as thin and as light as possible. For holders there will be 3rd party solutions.

It will be an option for consumers who want a bigger screen and not all the other weight and balast of an MB/P.

Same as people wanting bigger iPhones.

The iOS will then have to mature into split screen and multitasking, i.e. limited OS X functionality (Oh the blasphemy)

Posted several time, I wouldn't even mind a bigger version (17")

And while we are on bigger: Apple fix the newsstand app to allow pinching to enlarge for ANYTHING read within that app. I get MacWorld which is now no longer in print and since iOS8 the zoom feature under Accessibility no longer works and the text larger maximum selected doesn't do a thing either.

Don't know if they read their own stuff, if they do, they should see that the type is too small.

The surface 3 is really a fantastic product. I urge everyone to try it out. I really mean it when i say the iPad will rule consumers, but for the road warriors and hands on such as hospitals, real estate agents, students, and the such, the SP3 nails it down. MS really has a game changer, and Apple sees that and if done correctly, OSX plus iOS would really destroy SP3. Plus an apple trackpad which is the only reason i have not jumped from my macbook to the sp3. trackpad is VERY important to me.

have you tried the surface pro? the new one? with all its shortcomings, it feels much more competent than an iPad air by a long shot. i don't think you're speaking for many people other than those with limited imagination and an inability to grasp others' workflows. there's plenty in between iOS iMovie and rendering a pixar feature.

Who cares about the Surface? This post is about an upcoming iPad Plus or Pro for people like me who will buy only Apple, so get off and peddle your junk someplace else.

I just bought the iPad Air 2 but will gladly hand it over to my wife and buy the bigger iPad for a better browsing experience.

If you use the iPad in landscape mode yeah but sheet music, drawing and painting, reading magazines and so on all of that requires portrait mode. So widescreen would feel bad in the hands.

If you're only using your iPad Pro to read music or read magazines, then you're using it wrong. Most MacBook Pro users don't just use the thing to browse the web. That's what the MacBook Air is for. People who want to read music and magazines can still use the iPad Air. The iPad Pro is going to be first about creating content, and secondly about consuming content. That's why it has Pro in the name. If it's just an iPad Plus then I don't see the point of having one unless someone is nearly blind. IMO there is no point in a bigger iPad unless it brings with it expanded utility. Apple made the iPhone bigger but also expanded the utility giving it iPad-like features. I expect they would do something similar with the iPad Pro, mixing in premium, non-iPad (or perhaps better put, Mac-like) features that help people get work done. You know this thing is going to cost at least $200 more, so it isn't mass-market like a regular iPad.

No, I'm going to say never fairly confidently. Sure, tablets may eventually get to the point where they can take over a lot of the tasks where workstations are neede today. But as tablets become more powerful, so do workstations. All the while computing needs will continue to increase. There will always be a need for more horsepower.

Would be cool as a register, especially with Square releasing the Apple Pay version of their product.

Also I guess it would find game usage, as a center piece, like for board games or poker. (cards on your phone, table on the iPad+)

Lighten up, fanboy. This is a tech board focusing on Apple products. Talking about the competition is perfectly fine.

IPAD 12 INCH main advantages

1 - Magazines all around the world use this format . so when you read a magazine you don't need to zoom anymore to read every time .

2- when travelling how many people are watching movies on their ipad ? what is better to watch it on 9.7 or 12 inch?

3- when browsing the internet . No need to zoom anymore

4- many editing applications need more space to have more buttons without cropping the image

5- WHY EVERYONE IS BUYING THE IPHONE 6 ?

WHY EVERYONE IS BUYING BIG TV SETS ? ten years ago everyone who would buy a tv more than 50 inch would be ridiculous . now 65 inch are standards

So yes Bigger IS BETTER
:)

PS:this is my first post on macrumors .

Honestly, for reasons 1-3, do you have poor eyesight?

Oh, and welcome to MacRumors. :)

RAAAHHH! GET OVMAH FORUM SURFACE FREAAAAKKKKSSS! HATE YALL!

But seriously, the reason so many people are bringing up the Surface is because the iPad Pro will likely (or better be) a direct competitor to it. It'll likely use a faster processor, have at least double the ram, hopefully use a pressure sensitive stylus, and be built to handle higher end applications. That's pretty much the SP's current territory, so bringing it up here is perfectly valid.

Wow, how childish and narrow minded!

How would we ever know the size of the rumored 12.2" iPad unless a mockup was done?!?!?!??!?
